The Daily Office

The ancient practice of the Daily Office offers a framework for prayer which is bigger than our own efforts. Where our prayers are often immediate and sometimes self centred, these prayers catch us up in the big picture of God’s story, his glory and his coming Kingdom. I love the daily office, with its  blend of bible readings and prayers, beautiful liturgy and silence because far more effectively than my own stumbling prayers it draws me into the big picture of our place in God’s purposes. It is healing and freeing, as I find my worries and problems taking a more healthy perspective, and hope is stirred not simply that my own problems will be solved, but that the suffering of the world will be caught up in God’s loving purposes.

¶Morning Prayer
Christmas Day

Preparation

O Lord, open our lips
Alland our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

You laid the foundation of the earth
Alland the heavens are the work of your hands.

One or more of the following is said or sung:

this or another prayer of thanksgiving

Blessed are you, sovereign God,
creator of heaven and earth,
to you be praise and glory for ever.
As your living Word, eternal in heaven,
assumed the frailty of our mortal flesh,
may the light of your love be born in us
to fill our hearts with joy as we sing:
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
AllBlessed be God for ever.

a suitable hymn, or A Song of the Bride

1I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, •
my soul shall exult in my God;

2Who has clothed me with the garments of salvation, •
and has covered me with the cloak of integrity,

3As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, •
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

4For as the earth puts forth her blossom, •
and as seeds in the garden spring up,

5So shall God make righteousness and praise •
blossom before all the nations.

6For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, •
and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest

7Until her deliverance shines out like the dawn, •
and her salvation as a burning torch.

8The nations shall see your deliverance, •
and all rulers shall see your glory;

9Then you shall be called by a new name •
which the mouth of God will give.

10You shall be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, •
a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

Isaiah 61.10,11; 62.1-3

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

This opening prayer may be said

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
AllAmen.

The Word of God

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 110

Refrain:The Lord is king and has put on glorious apparel.

1The Lord said to my lord, ‘Sit at my right hand, •
until I make your enemies your footstool.’

2May the Lord stretch forth the sceptre of your power; •
rule from Zion in the midst of your enemies.

3‘Noble are you on this day of your birth; •
on the holy mountain, from the womb of the dawn
the dew of your new birth is upon you.’ R

4The Lord has sworn and will not retract: •
‘You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.’

5The king at your right hand, O Lord, •
shall smite down kings in the day of his wrath. R

6In all his majesty, he shall judge among the nations, •
smiting heads over all the wide earth.

7He shall drink from the brook beside the way; •
therefore shall he lift high his head. R

Refrain:The Lord is king and has put on glorious apparel.

Lord Jesus, divine Son and eternal priest,
inspire us with the confidence of your final conquest of evil,
and grant that daily on our way
we may drink of the brook of your eternal life
and so find courage against all adversities;
for your mercy’s sake.

Psalm 117

Refrain:Alleluia.

1O praise the Lord, all you nations; •
praise him, all you peoples.

2For great is his steadfast love towards us, •
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever.
Alleluia.

Refrain:Alleluia.

Gracious God,
we praise you for your faithfulness
and pray that every nation may find your blessing
in the face of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Each psalm or group of psalms may end with

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle.

Canticle

A Song of the Messiah, or another suitable canticle, for example, number 21 (page 572) or number 26 (page 577), may be said

Refrain:

AllTo us a child is born,
to us a son is given.

1The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; •
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
upon them the light has dawned.

2You have increased their joy and given them great gladness; •
they rejoiced before you as with joy at the harvest.

3For you have shattered the yoke that burdened them; •
the collar that lay heavy on their shoulders.

4For to us a child is born and to us a son is given, •
and the government will be upon his shoulder.

5And his name will be called: Wonderful Counsellor;
the Mighty God; •
the Everlasting Father; the Prince of Peace.

6Of the increase of his government and of peace •
there will be no end,

7Upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, •
to establish and uphold it with justice and righteousness.

8From this time forth and for evermore; •
the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Isaiah 9.2, 3b, 4a, 6, 7

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

AllTo us a child is born,
to us a son is given.

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 62.1-5

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
until her vindication shines out like the dawn,
and her salvation like a burning torch.
The nations shall see your vindication,
and all the kings your glory;
and you shall be called by a new name
that the mouth of the Lord will give.
You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord,
and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
and your land shall no more be termed Desolate;
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
and your land Married;
for the Lord delights in you,
and your land shall be married.
For as a young man marries a young woman,
so shall your builder marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
so shall your God rejoice over you.

Matthew 1.18-25

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel’,
which means, ‘God is with us.’ When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

a suitable hymn, or A Song of the King’s Glory

1The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it, •
the compass of the world and all who dwell therein.

2For he has founded it upon the seas •
and set it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

3‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord, •
or who can rise up in his holy place?’

4‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, •
who have not lifted up their soul to an idol,

This opening prayer may be said

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
AllAmen.

The Word of God

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 45

Refrain:Behold our defender, O God,
and look upon the face of your anointed.

1My heart is astir with gracious words; •
as I make my song for the king,
my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

2You are the fairest of men; •
full of grace are your lips,
for God has blest you for ever.

3Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty one; •
gird on your majesty and glory.

4Ride on and prosper in the cause of truth •
and for the sake of humility and righteousness. R

5Your right hand will teach you terrible things; •
your arrows will be sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies,
so that peoples fall beneath you.

6Your throne is God’s throne, for ever; •
the sceptre of your kingdom is the sceptre of righteousness.

7You love righteousness and hate iniquity; •
therefore God, your God, has anointed you
with the oil of gladness above your fellows.

8All your garments are fragrant with myrrh, aloes and cassia; •
from ivory palaces the music of strings makes you glad.

9Kings’ daughters are among your honourable women; •
at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. R

10Hear, O daughter; consider and incline your ear; •
forget your own people and your father’s house.

11So shall the king have pleasure in your beauty; •
he is your lord, so do him honour.

12The people of Tyre shall bring you gifts; •
the richest of the people shall seek your favour.

13The king’s daughter is all glorious within; •
her clothing is embroidered cloth of gold. R

14She shall be brought to the king in raiment of needlework; •
after her the virgins that are her companions.

15With joy and gladness shall they be brought •
and enter into the palace of the king.

16‘Instead of your fathers you shall have sons, •
whom you shall make princes over all the land.

17‘I will make your name to be remembered through all generations; •
therefore shall the peoples praise you for ever and ever.’ R

Refrain:Behold our defender, O God,
and look upon the face of your anointed.

Lord our God,
bring your bride, your holy Church,
with joy to the marriage feast of heaven,
and unite us with your anointed Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 113

Refrain:From the rising of the sun to its setting
let the name of the Lord be praised.

1Alleluia.
Give praise, you servants of the Lord, •
O praise the name of the Lord.

2Blessed be the name of the Lord, •
from this time forth and for evermore.

3From the rising of the sun to its setting •
let the name of the Lord be praised.

4The Lord is high above all nations •
and his glory above the heavens. R

5Who is like the Lord our God,
that has his throne so high, •
yet humbles himself to behold
the things of heaven and earth?

6He raises the poor from the dust •
and lifts the needy from the ashes,

7To set them with princes, •
with the princes of his people.

8He gives the barren woman a place in the house •
and makes her a joyful mother of children.
Alleluia.

Refrain:From the rising of the sun to its setting
let the name of the Lord be praised.

From the rising of the sun to its setting
we praise your name, O Lord;
may your promise to raise the poor from the dust
and turn the fortunes of the needy upside down
be fulfilled in our time also,
as it was in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Each psalm or group of psalms may end with

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

If there are two Scripture readings, the first may be read here, or both may be read after the canticle.

Canticle

A Song of the Wilderness, or another suitable canticle, for example, number 30 (page 581) or number 49 (page 601), may be said

Refrain:

AllLift up your voice with strength,
O herald of good tidings.

1The wilderness and the dry land shall rejoice, •
the desert shall blossom and burst into song.

2They shall see the glory of the Lord, •
the majesty of our God.

3Strengthen the weary hands, •
and make firm the feeble knees.

4Say to the anxious, ‘Be strong, fear not,
your God is coming with judgement, •
coming with judgement to save you.’

5Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, •
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

6Then shall the lame leap like a hart, •
and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

7For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, •
and streams in the desert;

8The ransomed of the Lord shall return with singing, •
with everlasting joy upon their heads.

9Joy and gladness shall be theirs, •
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Isaiah 35.1, 2b-4a, 4c-6, 10

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

AllLift up your voice with strength,
O herald of good tidings.

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 63.1-6

‘Who is this that comes from Edom,
from Bozrah in garments stained crimson?
Who is this so splendidly robed,
marching in his great might?’
‘It is I, announcing vindication,
mighty to save.’
‘Why are your robes red,
and your garments like theirs who tread the wine press?’
‘I have trodden the wine press alone,
and from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their juice spattered on my garments,
and stained all my robes.
For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and the year for my redeeming work had come.
I looked, but there was no helper;
I stared, but there was no one to sustain me;
so my own arm brought me victory,
and my wrath sustained me.
I trampled down peoples in my anger,
I crushed them in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.’

2 John

The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth, because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us for ever:

Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father. But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another. And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning—you must walk in it.

Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist! Be on your guard, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward. Everyone who does not abide in the teaching of Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God; whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. Do not receive into the house or welcome anyone who comes to you and does not bring this teaching; for to welcome is to participate in the evil deeds of such a person.

Although I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink; instead I hope to come to you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

The children of your elect sister send you their greetings.

A suitable song or chant, or a responsory in this or another form, may follow

Now it is time to awake out of sleep,
Allfor the night is far spent and the day is at hand.
Now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed,
Allfor the night is far spent.
Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness
and put on the armour of light,
Allfor the day is at hand.
Put on the Lord Jesus Christ
and make no provision for the flesh,
Allfor the night is far spent and the day is at hand.

he is the King of glory.’

Psalm 24

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

This opening prayer may be said

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
AllAmen.

The Word of God

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 128

Refrain:How abundant is your goodness, O Lord.

1Blessed are all those who fear the Lord, •
and walk in his ways.

2You shall eat the fruit of the toil of your hands; •
it shall go well with you, and happy shall you be. R

3Your wife within your house
shall be like a fruitful vine; •
your children round your table,
like fresh olive branches.

4Thus shall the one be blest •
who fears the Lord. R

5The Lord from out of Zion bless you, •
that you may see Jerusalem in prosperity
all the days of your life.

6May you see your children’s children, •
and may there be peace upon Israel. R

Refrain:How abundant is your goodness, O Lord.

O Christ, our true vine,
may we your branches
be ever fruitful in your service
and share your love and peace with all your children,
in the power of the Spirit and to the glory of the Father.

Psalm 129

Refrain:The Lord ransoms the life of his servants.

1‘Many a time have they fought against me from my youth,’ •
may Israel now say;

2‘Many a time have they fought against me from my youth, •
but they have not prevailed against me.’

3The ploughers ploughed upon my back •
and made their furrows long.

4But the righteous Lord •
has cut the cords of the wicked in pieces. R

5Let them be put to shame and turned backwards, •
as many as are enemies of Zion.

6Let them be like grass upon the housetops, •
which withers before it can grow,

7So that no reaper can fill his hand, •
nor a binder of sheaves his bosom;

8And none who go by may say,
‘The blessing of the Lord be upon you. •
We bless you in the name of the Lord.’ R

Refrain:The Lord ransoms the life of his servants.

Jesus our redeemer,
you bore the cut of the lash
for us and our salvation;
help us to bear our sufferings
and to share in the affliction
of all who suffer for your holy name.

Psalm 130

Refrain:My soul waits for the Lord.

1Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord;
Lord, hear my voice; •
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

2If you, Lord, were to mark what is done amiss, •
O Lord, who could stand?

3But there is forgiveness with you, •
so that you shall be feared.

4I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; •
in his word is my hope.

5My soul waits for the Lord,
more than the night watch for the morning, •
more than the night watch for the morning.

6O Israel, wait for the Lord, •
for with the Lord there is mercy;

7With him is plenteous redemption •
and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. R

Refrain:My soul waits for the Lord.

Father, we commend to your faithful love
those who are crying from the depths;
help them to watch and pray
through their time of darkness,
in sure hope of the dawn of your
forgiveness and redemption;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 131

Refrain:O Israel, trust in the Lord.

1O Lord, my heart is not proud; •
my eyes are not raised in haughty looks.

2I do not occupy myself with great matters, •
with things that are too high for me.

3But I have quieted and stilled my soul,
like a weaned child on its mother’s breast; •
so my soul is quieted within me.

4O Israel, trust in the Lord, •
from this time forth for evermore. R

Refrain:O Israel, trust in the Lord.

Eternal God,
calm and quieten our souls;
keep us humble and full of wonder
and trusting as we live in your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

5Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, •
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

6Then shall the lame leap like a hart, •
and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

7For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, •
and streams in the desert;

8The ransomed of the Lord shall return with singing, •
with everlasting joy upon their heads.

9Joy and gladness shall be theirs, •
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 56.1-8

Thus says the Lord:
Maintain justice, and do what is right,
for soon my salvation will come,
and my deliverance be revealed.
Happy is the mortal who does this,
the one who holds it fast,
who keeps the sabbath, not profaning it,
and refrains from doing any evil.
Do not let the foreigner joined to the Lord say,
‘The Lord will surely separate me from his people’;
and do not let the eunuch say,
‘I am just a dry tree.’
For thus says the Lord:
To the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths,
who choose the things that please me
and hold fast my covenant,
I will give, in my house and within my walls,
a monument and a name
better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
that shall not be cut off.
And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord,
and to be his servants,
all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it,
and hold fast my covenant—
these I will bring to my holy mountain,
and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
for all peoples.
Thus says the Lord God,
who gathers the outcasts of Israel,
I will gather others to them
besides those already gathered.

2 Peter 3

This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour spoken through your apostles. First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts and saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!’ They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water,through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the godless.

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Put on the Lord Jesus Christ

3‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord, •
or who can rise up in his holy place?’

4‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, •
who have not lifted up their soul to an idol,

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 124

Refrain:Our help is in the name of the Lord.

1If the Lord himself had not been on our side, •
now may Israel say;

2If the Lord had not been on our side, •
when enemies rose up against us;

3Then would they have swallowed us alive •
when their anger burned against us; R

4Then would the waters have overwhelmed us
and the torrent gone over our soul; •
over our soul would have swept the raging waters.

5But blessed be the Lord •
who has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth.

6Our soul has escaped
as a bird from the snare of the fowler; •
the snare is broken and we are delivered.

7Our help is in the name of the Lord, •
who has made heaven and earth.

Refrain:Our help is in the name of the Lord.

O God, maker of heaven and earth,
you save us in the water of baptism
and by the suffering of your Son you set us free;
help us to put our trust in his victory
and to know the salvation won for us
by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 125

Refrain:Glorious things are spoken of you,
Zion, city of our God.

1Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, •
which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.

2As the hills stand about Jerusalem, •
so the Lord stands round about his people,
from this time forth for evermore.

3The sceptre of wickedness shall not hold sway
over the land allotted to the righteous, •
lest the righteous turn their hands to evil.

4Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, •
and to those who are true of heart.

5Those who turn aside to crooked ways
the Lord shall take away with the evildoers; •
but let there be peace upon Israel. R

Refrain:Glorious things are spoken of you,
Zion, city of our God.

God of power,
you are strong to save
and you never fail those who trust in you;
keep us under your protection
and spread abroad your reign of peace
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 126

Refrain:The Lord has indeed done great things for us.

1When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, •
then were we like those who dream.

2Then was our mouth filled with laughter •
and our tongue with songs of joy.

3Then said they among the nations, •
‘The Lord has done great things for them.’

4The Lord has indeed done great things for us, •
and therefore we rejoiced.

5Restore again our fortunes, O Lord, •
as the river beds of the desert.

6Those who sow in tears •
shall reap with songs of joy.

7Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed, •
will come back with shouts of joy,
bearing their sheaves with them. R

Refrain:The Lord has indeed done great things for us.

Lord, as you send rain and flowers
even to the wilderness,
renew us by your Holy Spirit,
help us to sow good seed in time of adversity
and to live to rejoice in your good harvest of all creation;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 127

Refrain:The Lord shall keep watch over your going out
and your coming in.

1Unless the Lord builds the house, •
those who build it labour in vain.

2Unless the Lord keeps the city, •
the guard keeps watch in vain.

3It is in vain that you hasten to rise up early
and go so late to rest, eating the bread of toil, •
for he gives his beloved sleep. R

4Children are a heritage from the Lord •
and the fruit of the womb is his gift.

5Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, •
so are the children of one’s youth.

6Happy are those who have their quiver full of them: •
they shall not be put to shame
when they dispute with their enemies in the gate. R

Refrain:The Lord shall keep watch over your going out
and your coming in.

Lord, you are ever watchful
and bless us with your gifts;
as you provide for all our needs,
so help us to build only what pleases you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 55

Ho, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and you that have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labour for that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
listen, so that you may live.
I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
See, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
See, you shall call nations that you do not know,
and nations that do not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you.
Seek the Lord while he may be found,
call upon him while he is near;
let the wicked forsake their way,
and the unrighteous their thoughts;
let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
For you shall go out in joy,
and be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

2 Peter 2.4-end

For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of deepest darkness to be kept until the judgement; and if he did not spare the ancient world, even though he saved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood on a world of the ungodly; and if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinctionand made them an example of what is coming to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man greatly distressed by the licentiousness of the lawless (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by their lawless deeds that he saw and heard), then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgement—especially those who indulge their flesh in depraved lust, and who despise authority.

Bold and wilful, they are not afraid to slander the glorious ones, whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not bring against them a slanderous judgement from the Lord. These people, however, are like irrational animals, mere creatures of instinct, born to be caught and killed. They slander what they do not understand, and when those creatures are destroyed, they also will be destroyed, suffering the penalty for doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, revelling in their dissipation while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! They have left the straight road and have gone astray, following the road of Balaam son of Bosor, who loved the wages of doing wrong, but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm; for them the deepest darkness has been reserved. For they speak bombastic nonsense, and with licentious desires of the flesh they entice people who have just escaped from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption; for people are slaves to whatever masters them. For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overpowered, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment that was passed on to them. It has happened to them according to the true proverb,
‘The dog turns back to its own vomit’,
and,
‘The sow is washed only to wallow in the mud.’

a suitable hymn, or A Song of the King’s Glory

1The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it, •
the compass of the world and all who dwell therein.

2For he has founded it upon the seas •
and set it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

3‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord, •
or who can rise up in his holy place?’

4‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, •
who have not lifted up their soul to an idol,
nor sworn an oath to a lie;

5‘They shall receive a blessing from the Lord, •
a just reward from the God of their salvation.’

6Such is the company of those who seek him, •
of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

7Lift up your heads, O gates;
be lifted up, you everlasting doors; •
and the King of glory shall come in.

8‘Who is the King of glory?’ •
‘The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord who is mighty in battle.’

9Lift up your heads, O gates;
be lifted up, you everlasting doors; •
and the King of glory shall come in.

10‘Who is this King of glory?’ •
‘The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory.’

Psalm 24

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

This opening prayer may be said

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
AllAmen.

The Word of God

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 121

Refrain:The Lord shall keep you from all evil.

1I lift up my eyes to the hills; •
from where is my help to come?

2My help comes from the Lord, •
the maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not suffer your foot to stumble; •
he who watches over you will not sleep.

4Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel •
shall neither slumber nor sleep. R

5The Lord himself watches over you; •
the Lord is your shade at your right hand,

6So that the sun shall not strike you by day, •
neither the moon by night.

7The Lord shall keep you from all evil; •
it is he who shall keep your soul.

8The Lord shall keep watch over your going out
and your coming in, •
from this time forth for evermore. R

Refrain:The Lord shall keep you from all evil.

Lord, ever watchful and faithful,
we look to you to be our defence
and we lift our hearts to know your help;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 122

Refrain:How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts.

1I was glad when they said to me, •
‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’

2And now our feet are standing •
within your gates, O Jerusalem;

3Jerusalem, built as a city •
that is at unity in itself. R

4Thither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, •
as is decreed for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the Lord.

5For there are set the thrones of judgement, •
the thrones of the house of David.

6O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: •
‘May they prosper who love you. R

7‘Peace be within your walls •
and tranquillity within your palaces.’

8For my kindred and companions’ sake, •
I will pray that peace be with you.

9For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, •
I will seek to do you good. R

Refrain:How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts.

God of our pilgrimage,
bring us with joy to the eternal city
founded on the rock,
and give to our earthly cities
the peace that comes from above;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 123

Refrain:Our eyes wait upon the Lord our God.

1To you I lift up my eyes, •
to you that are enthroned in the heavens.

2As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, •
or the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,

3So our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, •
until he have mercy upon us. R

4Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, •
for we have had more than enough of contempt.

5Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of the arrogant, •
and of the contempt of the proud. R

Refrain:Our eyes wait upon the Lord our God.

Sovereign God, enthroned in the heavens,
look upon us with your eyes of mercy,
as we look on you with humility and love,
and fill our souls with your peace
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Each psalm or group of psalms may end with

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever.

5Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, •
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

6Then shall the lame leap like a hart, •
and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

7For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, •
and streams in the desert;

8The ransomed of the Lord shall return with singing, •
with everlasting joy upon their heads.

9Joy and gladness shall be theirs, •
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Isaiah 35.1, 2b-4a, 4c-6, 10

AllLift up your voice with strength,
O herald of good tidings.

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 54

Sing, O barren one who did not bear;
burst into song and shout,
you who have not been in labour!
For the children of the desolate woman will be more
than the children of her that is married, says the Lord.
Enlarge the site of your tent,
and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;
do not hold back; lengthen your cords
and strengthen your stakes.
For you will spread out to the right and to the left,
and your descendants will possess the nations
and will settle the desolate towns.
Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed;
do not be discouraged, for you will not suffer disgrace;
for you will forget the shame of your youth,
and the disgrace of your widowhood you will remember no more.
For your Maker is your husband,
the Lord of hosts is his name;
the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,
the God of the whole earth he is called.
For the Lord has called you
like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,
like the wife of a man’s youth when she is cast off,
says your God.
For a brief moment I abandoned you,
but with great compassion I will gather you.
In overflowing wrath for a moment
I hid my face from you,
but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,
says the Lord, your Redeemer.
This is like the days of Noah to me:
Just as I swore that the waters of Noah
would never again go over the earth,
so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you
and will not rebuke you.
For the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.
O afflicted one, storm-tossed, and not comforted,
I am about to set your stones in antimony,
and lay your foundations with sapphires.
I will make your pinnacles of rubies,
your gates of jewels,
and all your wall of precious stones.
All your children shall be taught by the Lord,
and great shall be the prosperity of your children.
In righteousness you shall be established;
you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear;
and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
If anyone stirs up strife,
it is not from me;
whoever stirs up strife with you
shall fall because of you.
See, it is I who have created the smith
who blows the fire of coals,
and produces a weapon fit for its purpose;
I have also created the ravager to destroy.
No weapon that is fashioned against you shall prosper,
and you shall confute every tongue that rises against you in judgement.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord
and their vindication from me, says the Lord.

2 Peter 1.16-2.3

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.

So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive opinions. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Even so, many will follow their licentious ways, and because of these teachers the way of truth will be maligned. And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation, pronounced against them long ago, has not been idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

Gospel Canticle

The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or A Song of Redemption (page 620) may be said

Refrain:

AllLook towards the east, O Jerusalem,
and see the glory that is coming from God.

1Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, •
who has come to his people and set them free.

2He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, •
born of the house of his servant David.

3Through his holy prophets God promised of old •
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all that hate us,

4To show mercy to our ancestors, •
and to remember his holy covenant.

5This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: •
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

6Free to worship him without fear, •
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

7And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, •
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

8To give his people knowledge of salvation •
by the forgiveness of all their sins.

9In the tender compassion of our God •
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

10To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, •
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Luke 1.68-79

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Refrain:

AllLook towards the east, O Jerusalem,
and see the glory that is coming from God.

The Word of God

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 46

1God is our refuge and strength, •
a very present help in trouble;

2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, •
and though the mountains tremble in the heart of the sea;

3Though the waters rage and swell, •
and though the mountains quake at the towering seas. R

4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, •
the holy place of the dwelling of the Most High.

5God is in the midst of her;
therefore shall she not be removed; •
God shall help her at the break of day.

6The nations are in uproar and the kingdoms are shaken, •
but God utters his voice and the earth shall melt away.

7The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

8Come and behold the works of the Lord, •
what destruction he has wrought upon the earth.

9He makes wars to cease in all the world; •
he shatters the bow and snaps the spear
and burns the chariots in the fire.

10‘Be still, and know that I am God; •
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth.’

11The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

God of Jacob,
when the earth shakes
and the nations are in uproar,
speak, and let the storm be still;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 95

Refrain:Come, let us worship and bow down.

1O come, let us sing to the Lord; •
let us heartily rejoice in the rock of our salvation.

2Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving •
and be glad in him with psalms.

3For the Lord is a great God •
and a great king above all gods.

4In his hand are the depths of the earth •
and the heights of the mountains are his also.

5The sea is his, for he made it, •
and his hands have moulded the dry land.

6Come, let us worship and bow down •
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7For he is our God; •
we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

😯 that today you would listen to his voice: •
‘Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
on that day at Massah in the wilderness,

9‘When your forebears tested me, and put me to the proof, •
though they had seen my works.

10‘Forty years long I detested that generation and said, •
“This people are wayward in their hearts;
they do not know my ways.”

11‘So I swore in my wrath, •
“They shall not enter into my rest.” ’ R

Refrain:Come, let us worship and bow down.

as we bow down in praise this day,
make us attentive to your voice

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 52.13-53.end

See, my servant shall prosper;
he shall be exalted and lifted up,
and shall be very high.
Just as there were many who were astonished at him
—so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance,
and his form beyond that of mortals—
so he shall startle many nations;
kings shall shut their mouths because of him;
for that which had not been told them they shall see,
and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate.

Who has believed what we have heard?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by others;
a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity;
and as one from whom others hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him of no account.
Surely he has borne our infirmities
and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have all turned to our own way,
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By a perversion of justice he was taken away.
Who could have imagined his future?
For he was cut off from the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people.
They made his grave with the wicked
and his tomb with the rich,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain.
When you make his life an offering for sin,
he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days;
through him the will of the Lord shall prosper.
Out of his anguish he shall see light;
he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge.
The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
because he poured out himself to death,
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

2 Peter 1.1-15

Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have received a faith as precious as ours through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ:

May grace and peace be yours in abundance in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

His divine power has given us everything needed for life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Thus he has given us, through these things, his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of lust, and may become participants in the divine nature. For this very reason, you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness, and goodness with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with endurance, and endurance with godliness, and godliness with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. For if these things are yours and are increasing among you, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For anyone who lacks these things is short-sighted and blind, and is forgetful of the cleansing of past sins. Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more eager to confirm your call and election, for if you do this, you will never stumble. For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be richly provided for you.

Therefore I intend to keep on reminding you of these things, though you know them already and are established in the truth that has come to you. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to refresh your memory, since I know that my death will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

and see the glory that is coming from God.

10To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, •

a suitable hymn, or A Song of the King’s Glory

1The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it, •
the compass of the world and all who dwell therein.

2For he has founded it upon the seas •
and set it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

3‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord, •
or who can rise up in his holy place?’

4‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, •
who have not lifted up their soul to an idol,
nor sworn an oath to a lie;

5‘They shall receive a blessing from the Lord, •
a just reward from the God of their salvation.’

6Such is the company of those who seek him, •

be lifted up, you everlasting doors; •
and the King of glory shall come in.

8‘Who is the King of glory?’ •
‘The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord who is mighty in battle.’

Psalm 24

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son

This opening prayer may be said

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind.

Silence is kept.

The Word of God

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 77

Refrain:In the day of my trouble I have sought the Lord.

1I cry aloud to God; •
I cry aloud to God and he will hear me.

2In the day of my trouble I have sought the Lord; •
by night my hand is stretched out and does not tire;
my soul refuses comfort.

3I think upon God and I groan; •
I ponder, and my spirit faints.

4You will not let my eyelids close; •
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

5I consider the days of old; •
I remember the years long past; R

6I commune with my heart in the night; •
my spirit searches for understanding.

7Will the Lord cast us off for ever? •
Will he no more show us his favour?

8Has his loving mercy clean gone for ever? •
Has his promise come to an end for evermore?

9Has God forgotten to be gracious? •
Has he shut up his compassion in displeasure?

10And I said, ‘My grief is this: •
that the right hand of the Most High has lost its strength.’ R

11I will remember the works of the Lord •
and call to mind your wonders of old time.

12I will meditate on all your works •
and ponder your mighty deeds.

13Your way, O God, is holy; •
who is so great a god as our God?

14You are the God who worked wonders •
and declared your power among the peoples.

15With a mighty arm you redeemed your people, •
the children of Jacob and Joseph. R

16The waters saw you, O God;
the waters saw you and were afraid; •
the depths also were troubled.

17The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered; •
your arrows flashed on every side;

18The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
your lightnings lit up the ground; •
the earth trembled and shook.

19Your way was in the sea, and your paths in the great waters, •
but your footsteps were not known.

20You led your people like sheep •
by the hand of Moses and Aaron. R

Refrain:In the day of my trouble I have sought the Lord.

God our shepherd,
you led us and saved us in times of old;
do not forget your people in their troubles,
but raise up your power
to sustain the poor and helpless;
for the honour of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 98

Refrain:The Lord has made known his salvation.

1Sing to the Lord a new song, •
for he has done marvellous things.

2His own right hand and his holy arm •
have won for him the victory.

3The Lord has made known his salvation; •
his deliverance has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.

4He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness
towards the house of Israel, •
and all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. R

5Sound praises to the Lord, all the earth; •
break into singing and make music.

6Make music to the Lord with the lyre, •
with the lyre and the voice of melody.

7With trumpets and the sound of the horn •
sound praises before the Lord, the King. R

8Let the sea thunder and all that fills it, •
the world and all that dwell upon it.

9Let the rivers clap their hands •
and let the hills ring out together before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.

10In righteousness shall he judge the world •
and the peoples with equity. R

Refrain:The Lord has made known his salvation.

Lord God, just and true,
you make your salvation known in the sight of the nations;
tune the song of our hearts to the music of creation
as you come among us to judge the earth;
through our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Each psalm or group of psalms may end with

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son

the majesty of our God.

3Strengthen the weary hands, •
and make firm the feeble knees.

4Say to the anxious, ‘Be strong, fear not,
your God is coming with judgement, •
coming with judgement to save you.’

5Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, •
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

6Then shall the lame leap like a hart, •
and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

7For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, •
and streams in the desert;

Isaiah 51.17-end

Rouse yourself, rouse yourself!
Stand up, O Jerusalem,
you who have drunk at the hand of the Lord
the cup of his wrath,
who have drunk to the dregs
the bowl of staggering.
There is no one to guide her
among all the children she has borne;
there is no one to take her by the hand
among all the children she has brought up.
These two things have befallen you
—who will grieve with you?—
devastation and destruction, famine and sword—
who will comfort you?
Your children have fainted,
they lie at the head of every street
like an antelope in a net;
they are full of the wrath of the Lord,
the rebuke of your God.
Therefore hear this, you who are wounded,
who are drunk, but not with wine:
Thus says your Sovereign, the Lord,
your God who pleads the cause of his people:
See, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering;
you shall drink no more
from the bowl of my wrath.
And I will put it into the hand of your tormentors,
who have said to you,
‘Bow down, that we may walk on you’;
and you have made your back like the ground
and like the street for them to walk on.

2 Thessalonians 3

Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified everywhere, just as it is among you,and that we may be rescued from wicked and evil people; for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will go on doing the things that we command.May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labour we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you.This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

Take note of those who do not obey what we say in this letter; have nothing to do with them, so that they may be ashamed. Do not regard them as enemies, but warn them as believers.

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with all of you.

I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the mark in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 76

Refrain:The Lord has made fast his throne for judgement.

1In Judah God is known; •
his name is great in Israel.

2At Salem is his tabernacle, •
and his dwelling place in Zion.

3There broke he the flashing arrows of the bow, •
the shield, the sword and the weapons of war.

4In the light of splendour you appeared, •
glorious from the eternal mountains.

5The boastful were plundered; they have slept their sleep; •
none of the warriors can lift their hand.

6At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, •
both horse and chariot fell stunned. R

7Terrible are you in majesty: •
who can stand before your face when you are angry?

8You caused your judgement to be heard from heaven; •
the earth trembled and was still,

9When God arose to judgement, •
to save all the meek upon earth.

10You crushed the wrath of the peoples •
and bridled the wrathful remnant.

11Make a vow to the Lord your God and keep it; •
let all who are round about him bring gifts
to him that is worthy to be feared.

12He breaks down the spirit of princes •
and strikes terror in the kings of the earth. R

Refrain:The Lord has made fast his throne for judgement.

Majestic and gracious God,
more awesome than the agents of war,
more powerful than the wrath of nations,
restrain the violence of the peoples
and draw the despised of the earth
into the joyful life of your kingdom,
where you live and reign for ever and ever.

Psalm 97

Refrain:You, Lord, are most high over all the earth.

1The Lord is king: let the earth rejoice; •
let the multitude of the isles be glad.

2Clouds and darkness are round about him; •
righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

3Fire goes before him •
and burns up his enemies on every side.

4His lightnings lit up the world; •
the earth saw it and trembled. R

5The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, •
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6The heavens declared his righteousness, •
and all the peoples have seen his glory.

7Confounded be all who worship carved images
and delight in mere idols. •
Bow down before him, all you gods.

8Zion heard and was glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoiced, •
because of your judgements, O Lord. R

9For you, Lord, are most high over all the earth; •
you are exalted far above all gods.

10The Lord loves those who hate evil; •
he preserves the lives of his faithful
and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

11Light has sprung up for the righteous •
and joy for the true of heart.

12Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, •
and give thanks to his holy name. R

Refrain:You, Lord, are most high over all the earth.

Most high and holy God,
enthroned in fire and light,
burn away the dross of our lives
and kindle in us the fire of your love,
that our lives may reveal the light and life
we find in your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 51.9-16

Awake, awake, put on strength,
O arm of the Lord!
Awake, as in days of old,
the generations of long ago!
Was it not you who cut Rahab in pieces,
who pierced the dragon?
Was it not you who dried up the sea,
the waters of the great deep;
who made the depths of the sea a way
for the redeemed to cross over?
So the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain joy and gladness,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
I, I am he who comforts you;
why then are you afraid of a mere mortal who must die,
a human being who fades like grass?
You have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth.
You fear continually all day long
because of the fury of the oppressor,
who is bent on destruction.
But where is the fury of the oppressor?
The oppressed shall speedily be released;
they shall not die and go down to the Pit,
nor shall they lack bread.
For I am the Lord your God,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
the Lord of hosts is his name.
I have put my words in your mouth,
and hidden you in the shadow of my hand,
stretching out the heavens
and laying the foundations of the earth,
and saying to Zion, ‘You are my people.’

2 Thessalonians 2

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? And you know what is now restraining him, so that he may be revealed when his time comes. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but only until the one who now restrains it is removed. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will destroy with the breath of his mouth, annihilating him by the manifestation of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is apparent in the working of Satan, who uses all power, signs, lying wonders, and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is false, so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned.

But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news,so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

The Word of God

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 75

Refrain:God alone is judge.

1We give you thanks, O God, we give you thanks, •
for your name is near, as your wonderful deeds declare.

2‘I will seize the appointed time; •
I, the Lord, will judge with equity.

3‘Though the earth reels and all that dwell in her, •
it is I that hold her pillars steady. R

4‘To the boasters I say, “Boast no longer,” •
and to the wicked, “Do not lift up your horn.

5‘ “Do not lift up your horn on high; •
do not speak with a stiff neck.” ’ R

6For neither from the east nor from the west, •
nor yet from the wilderness comes exaltation.

7But God alone is judge; •
he puts down one and raises up another. R

8For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup, •
well mixed and full of foaming wine.

9He pours it out for all the wicked of the earth; •
they shall drink it, and drain the dregs. R

10But I will rejoice for ever •
and make music to the God of Jacob.

11All the horns of the wicked will I break, •
but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted. R

Refrain:God alone is judge.

Judge of all the earth,
restrain the ambition of the proud
and establish among us the reign of the Messiah,
who drained for us the cup of judgement
and is alive with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Psalm 96

Refrain:O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

1Sing to the Lord a new song; •
sing to the Lord, all the earth.

2Sing to the Lord and bless his name; •
tell out his salvation from day to day.

3Declare his glory among the nations •
and his wonders among all peoples.

4For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; •
he is more to be feared than all gods. R

5For all the gods of the nations are but idols; •
it is the Lord who made the heavens.

6Honour and majesty are before him; •
power and splendour are in his sanctuary.

7Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; •
ascribe to the Lord honour and strength.

8Ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name; •
bring offerings and come into his courts.

9O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; •
let the whole earth tremble before him.

10Tell it out among the nations that the Lord is king. •
He has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.

11Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad; •
let the sea thunder and all that is in it;

12Let the fields be joyful and all that is in them; •
let all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord.

13For he comes, he comes to judge the earth; •
with righteousness he will judge the world
and the peoples with his truth. R

Refrain:O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Lord God, you draw us by your beauty
and transform us by your holiness;
let our worship echo all creation’s praise
and declare your glory to the nations;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

5Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, •
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

6Then shall the lame leap like a hart, •
and the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

7For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, •

Scripture Reading

One or more readings appointed for the day are read.

The reading(s) may be followed by a time of silence.

Isaiah 51.1-8

Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness,
you that seek the Lord.
Look to the rock from which you were hewn,
and to the quarry from which you were dug.
Look to Abraham your father
and to Sarah who bore you;
for he was but one when I called him,
but I blessed him and made him many.
For the Lord will comfort Zion;
he will comfort all her waste places,
and will make her wilderness like Eden,
her desert like the garden of the Lord;
joy and gladness will be found in her,
thanksgiving and the voice of song.
Listen to me, my people,
and give heed to me, my nation;
for a teaching will go out from me,
and my justice for a light to the peoples.
I will bring near my deliverance swiftly,
my salvation has gone out
and my arms will rule the peoples;
the coastlands wait for me,
and for my arm they hope.
Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
and look at the earth beneath;
for the heavens will vanish like smoke,
the earth will wear out like a garment,
and those who live on it will die like gnats;
but my salvation will be for ever,
and my deliverance will never be ended.
Listen to me, you who know righteousness,
you people who have my teaching in your hearts;
do not fear the reproach of others,
and do not be dismayed when they revile you.
For the moth will eat them up like a garment,
and the worm will eat them like wool;
but my deliverance will be for ever,
and my salvation to all generations.

2 Thessalonians 1

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring.

This is evidence of the righteous judgement of God, and is intended to make you worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering. For it is indeed just of God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to the afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marvelled at on that day among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed. To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfil by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalmody

The appointed psalmody is said.

Psalm 70

Refrain:Come to me quickly, O God.

1O God, make speed to save me; •
O Lord, make haste to help me.

2Let those who seek my life
be put to shame and confusion; •
let them be turned back and disgraced
who wish me evil.

3Let those who mock and deride me •
turn back because of their shame. R

4But let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; •
let those who love your salvation say always, ‘Great is the Lord!’

5As for me, I am poor and needy; •
come to me quickly, O God.

6You are my help and my deliverer; •
O Lord, do not delay. R

Refrain:Come to me quickly, O God.

O God, our helper and defender,
deliver us in our weakness,
answer our longings
and vindicate our faith,
that we may see your glory
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 74

Refrain:Arise, O God, maintain your own cause.

1O God, why have you utterly disowned us? •
Why does your anger burn
against the sheep of your pasture?

2Remember your congregation that you purchased of old, •
the tribe you redeemed for your own possession,
and Mount Zion where you dwelt.

3Hasten your steps towards the endless ruins, •
where the enemy has laid waste all your sanctuary. R

4Your adversaries roared in the place of your worship; •
they set up their banners as tokens of victory.

5Like men brandishing axes on high in a thicket of trees, •
all her carved work they smashed down with hatchet and hammer.

6They set fire to your holy place; •
they defiled the dwelling place of your name
and razed it to the ground. R

7They said in their heart, ‘Let us make havoc of them altogether,’ •
and they burned down all the sanctuaries of God in the land.

8There are no signs to see, not one prophet left, •
not one among us who knows how long.

9How long, O God, will the adversary scoff? •
Shall the enemy blaspheme your name for ever?

10Why have you withheld your hand •
and hidden your right hand in your bosom? R

11Yet God is my king from of old, •
who did deeds of salvation in the midst of the earth.

12It was you that divided the sea by your might •
and shattered the heads of the dragons on the waters;

13You alone crushed the heads of Leviathan •
and gave him to the beasts of the desert for food. R

14You cleft the rock for fountain and flood; •
you dried up ever-flowing rivers.

15Yours is the day, yours also the night; •
you established the moon and the sun.

16You set all the bounds of the earth; •
you fashioned both summer and winter. R

17Remember now, Lord, how the enemy scoffed, •
how a foolish people despised your name.

18Do not give to wild beasts the soul of your turtle dove; •
forget not the lives of your poor for ever.

19Look upon your creation,
for the earth is full of darkness, •
full of the haunts of violence. R

20Let not the oppressed turn away ashamed, •
but let the poor and needy praise your name.

21Arise, O God, maintain your own cause; •
remember how fools revile you all the day long.

22Forget not the clamour of your adversaries, •
the tumult of your enemies that ascends continually. R

Refrain:Arise, O God, maintain your own cause.

Redeeming God,
renew your broken people
with your Holy Spirit,
that they may walk your narrow way,
and greet your coming dawn
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Isaiah 50

Thus says the Lord:
Where is your mother’s bill of divorce
with which I put her away?
Or which of my creditors is it
to whom I have sold you?
No, because of your sins you were sold,
and for your transgressions your mother was put away.
Why was no one there when I came?
Why did no one answer when I called?
Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem?
Or have I no power to deliver?
By my rebuke I dry up the sea,
I make the rivers a desert;
their fish stink for lack of water,
and die of thirst.
I clothe the heavens with blackness,
and make sackcloth their covering.
The Lord God has given me
the tongue of a teacher,
that I may know how to sustain
the weary with a word.
Morning by morning he wakens—
wakens my ear
to listen as those who are taught.
The Lord God has opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious,
I did not turn backwards.
I gave my back to those who struck me,
and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;
I did not hide my face
from insult and spitting.
The Lord God helps me;
therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint,
and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
he who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
Let us stand up together.
Who are my adversaries?
Let them confront me.
It is the Lord God who helps me;
who will declare me guilty?
All of them will wear out like a garment;
the moth will eat them up.
Who among you fears the Lord
and obeys the voice of his servant,
who walks in darkness
and has no light,
yet trusts in the name of the Lord
and relies upon his God?
But all of you are kindlers of fire,
lighters of firebrands.
Walk in the flame of your fire,
and among the brands that you have kindled!
This is what you shall have from my hand:
you shall lie down in torment.

1 Thessalonians 5.12-end

But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labour among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you;esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, beloved, to admonish the idlers, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.

May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

Beloved, pray for us.

Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. I solemnly command you by the Lord that this letter be read to all of them.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Gospel Canticle

The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or A Song of Redemption (page 620) may be said

Refrain:

AllThose who are wise will shine as brightly as the heavens,
and those who have instructed many in virtue will shine like stars
for all eternity.

AllGlory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Refrain:

AllThose who are wise will shine as brightly as the heavens,
and those who have instructed many in virtue will shine like stars
for all eternity.

O God, the judge of all,
who gave your servant John of the Cross
a warmth of nature, a strength of purpose
and a mystical faith
that sustained him even in the darkness:

in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
AllAmen.

Awaiting his coming in glory,
as our Saviour taught us, so we pray

AllOur Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread.

as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
