This is Fulla, the Hijab-clad Arab Muslim adaptation of the decadent West’s Barbie doll.
Our Barbie wears the Hijab (head scarf) and Islamic attire – a long dress with long sleeves. While she is a blessing to many parents in the Muslim world who are happy to see their children playing with a doll which conforms to social traditions and religious obligations, Egyptian blogger Ahmed Shokeir registers his disgust against Tunisian authorities who aren’t happy with the doll and are conducting a witch hunt and confiscating it from stores.
“Fulla is an Arab doll, developed a few years ago as an adaptation from the famous Barbie doll. It is only natural that she appears Arab or more specifically Gulf Arab, wearing the attire people in this part of the world are used to. Its manufacturers made sure that she wears the head scarf and its accompanying cloak without a veil, which covers the face. But Tunisia and you don’t know what Tunisia is, is conducting a clampdown and confiscating the doll and all other items which have Fulla’s image (such are stationery and school bags) on the grounds that the clothes she is wearing spread sectarianism. One of the journalists wrote that school bags carry Fulla’s pictures and he was worried that young children will be arrested and questioned for carrying the bags,” he wrote.

That`s really serious then. I didn`t believe it at first. That`s is one very lame excuse for confiscating this doll. I really don`t believe that that`s their reason.

I am not Muslim, and never will be, but I think that the people who are confiscating these dolls is SERIOUSLY messed up!
(I personally think they are charming, and I wish I had one!)

this debate and confiscation of Fulla doll is interesting. there is more to be understood about the reasons for confiscating Fulla. here in america, most girls own at least 1 Barbie doll. however, there is a backlash over Barbies appearance. many women are against allowing their daughters to play with Barbie because she is not realistic looking. Barbie does not represent reality, instead she creates an ideal no human can naturally attain. and Barbie is thought to degrade women; she only had traditional female jobs…if any job at all. then they made “doctor barbie”…not a good seller. “brunette”(brown-haired) Barbie was never as popular as blonde Barbie. I see Fulla does not look like most Arab girls or women. Please be careful of the beauty ideal you set for the children…we can never look like a doll.

Noor, Barbie dolls are alien to the spirit of Islam, but the issue here is the oppression of the Tunisian authorities, who are clamping down so hard on Islam that they even ban the hijab on dolls.
August 18, 2013 at 2:11 pm
Noor are u Arab? Have u seen Arab girls? These doll looks Arab to me. They’re even prettier than this doll.
