'Getting Started' looks at the very beginnings of home building and renovation. Everything from Design and securing Finance to finding a Tradesperson or becoming an Owner Builder.

All over Australia, even at this very minute, people are building, renovating and buying homes. Before you start out on your homebuilding/renovating journey it is important to realise your goals and needs precisely.

It is wise to make a list of priorities that you are searching for in a new home or renovation.

Whatever the list consists of, it is important to make it as comprehensive as possible so that you have a guide for the decision making process along the way. Alongside your list of priorities write a list of possibilities, ones that are realistic.

This may include:

  • Plenty of space for young children

  • An office area to run a business

  • A large entertaining area

  • Easy access to public transport

Also include your dream plan. Though it may not be achievable right now it is important to keep in mind changing circumstances, and that your new house or renovation might be just a stepping stone to where you ultimately want to end up.

This section will help to inform you about some of the main issues that need to be addressed before the actual building process. If you come across any problems no matter how big or small, feel free to contact us via the Forum.

There is of course the first and biggest decision:

  • Should you buy a brand new house?

  • Build a house from scratch on a block of your choice?

  • Buy a house to be renovated?

  • Or renovate the one youre in now?

The answer may not be as obvious as you may hope. Though there are many advantages to purpose-designing a house to suit your needs, it is important to understand how difficult this process can be, and if you are a young family, it may add unnecessary stress to your life.

On the other hand if you are a couple retiring and have a passion for design, then building a new house could be the ideal project for you.
