What is your RASI? • Rasi and Nakshatra CALCULATOR. • Know your Nakshatra Temple. • Know your Nakshatra Shiva Linga. • Learn Nakshatra Prayers/Mantras.
Some also refer to this as the birth star even though that terminology is not quite precise since a nakshtra can be much more than just one star.
27 Nakshatras in a Great Circle
Imagine a great circle in space and the 27 nakshatras laid out equally on this circle.
Since a circle covers 360 degrees, these 27 nakshatrams cover 360 degrees in space.
So the "space" occupied by one nakshatram is 360 divided by 27 which is equal to 13 degrees and 20 minutes.
See diagram below. https://Agasthiar.Org/AUMzine/0019-rasi.htm
12 Raasis in the Same Great Circle
Now instead of dividing these 360 degrees by 27 divide them by 12. If you do that, you get 12 raasis.
12 Raasis = 27 Nakshatras!
1 Raasi = 2 and 1/4 Nakshatras
The space occupied by the 12 rashis is the same space occupied by the 27 nakshatras. Thus each one of us has a janma rasi just like we have a janma nakshatra.
You can think of the 12 rasis as another way of grouping the 27 nakshatras.
See diagram below.
Since 12 rasis = 27 nakshatras, one raasi = two and a quarter nakshatras (since 27 divided by 12 = 2 and 1/4). In other words, the 27 nakshatras are grouped under 12 rasis at two and a quarter nakshtras per raasi.
As you can see, a nakshatra can occupy a part of one rasi and a part of the next rasi (as laid out in the table below). This is the case for 9 of the 27 nakshatras. These 9 are: Kritika, Mrigasira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Visaka, Uttarashada, Dhanishta and Poorvabhadra are partly in one rasi and partly in another.
But if each nakshatra is divided into 4 equal quarters, a quarter will never occupy more than one rasi. This higher precision division of each nakshatra into quarters has been done.
Nakshatra Paadham = 4 Quarters of each nakshatra
The space occupied by each naksatra (in the great circle) is divided into four equal quarters.
Since there are 27 nakshatras, there are 108 nakshatra quarters (27 x 4 = 108) in total with each quarter spanning 3 degrees and 20 minutes of the great circle.
Each quarter of each nakshatra will never span two rasis; each quarter will be part of one and only one rasi.
Each such nakshatra quarter is referred to as a Nakshatra Paadham or Nakshatra Pada.
When you hear people make statements such as "My nakshatra is Punarvasu 2nd padham" or "My birth star is Vishaka 4th quarter" and so on, they are referring to this finer division of each nakshatra into quarters.
If you know your janma nakshatra, you can find out your janma rasi from your nakshatram. Click here to do that.
Of course, if your nakshatra spans more than one rasi, then use our calculator above to find out which of the two is your rasi.

Finding Rasi/Nakshatra using your name?
The reliable way to find your rasi and nakshatra is by using your birth date, time and place. This is what the Rasi/Nakshatra Calculator (above) does and this is what is strongly suggested. Trying to find rasi/nakshatra using your name is not reliable. This can be illustrated using the example of none other than our blessed Lord Shri Ram Himself. Lord Rama's birth rashi is Kataka (Cancer) and His birth nakshatra is Punarvasu, 4-th paadham (quarter). But according to His name, Lord Rama's rasi would be (erroneously) Thulam (Libra) and His nakshatra would be (erroneously) Chittirai (Chitra) paadham 3. The above example should show you that trying to determine rashi/nakshatra using one's name is not reliable. Thus we strongly suggest that you use your birth time and place to figure out your rashi and nakshatra. If you don't know your birth time, ask your parents or consult your birth certificate. But there is in fact an ancient rule regarding naming babies based on their nakshatra paadham. Note that in this system, the nakshatra of the baby (which is calculated from the birth time and place) is used to name the baby. In other words, we go from nakshatra to name in this ancient system. In those cases where the baby has been named using this system (i.e., using the nakshatra paadham to name the baby), the name can later be used to find the rashi/nakshatra, but only in those cases.
Abhijit, the 28th Nakshatra
Abhijit is in the peacock feather in Lord Krishna's crown.
There are thousands and thousands of great temples. So can we pick one temple for one nakshatra? We can't, but the Arunachala Siddha, Sathguru Venkataraman can. And that is exactly what he did for our benefit.
Satguru Venkataraman first revealed these temples for each nakshatra to the world in our monthly magazine over the course of a few years.
He also made this information available in the form of 3 books published by us in the early 2000s. These books contain detailed Siddha revelations on these temples and also many Siddha secrets on each of the nakshatras. You can get these books at our Ashram stores.
Nakshatra Temple for "Lifetime Worship"
The temples on this list are meant for lifetime worship. What do we mean by lifetime worship? Say your nakshatra is Rohini. You should worship at the temple mentioned for Rohini in the list below given by Sathguru Venkataraman as much as possible throughout your life. In other words, this particular temple has a special significance for you throughout your life. This is what we mean by lifetime worship.
But keep in mind that we should also worship at the temples for the 26 other nakshatrams too and not just at the one mentioned for our nakshatra.

Elaborate details on each temple and worship procedures are found in Sathguru Venkataraman's books on these nakshatra (birth star) temples. These books are available in our Ashram book store.
