Staff, Cabin Crew and Ground Staff termed as "Condescending, Uncooperative and Downright Rude" by State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Punjab in a Complaint Against Air Canada, Jet Airways

September 1, 2018 (AirportChandigarh.com):  In September 2017, a mother with two children aged 11 and 3 were forced to leave an Air Canada plane by their crew and spend a few hours sitting on the airport floor with no food, water or mobile phone at Delhi Airport in the middle of the night. Their luggage was flown to Canada and they were left behind. Mina and her children had booked a flight from Chandigarh to Toronto via Delhi. The tickets were issued by Jet Airways. They took a Jet Airways plane from Chandigarh to Delhi and from Delhi, they were to board an Air Canada plane. Air Canada is Jet Airways' code sharing plane.
After boarding the Air Canada plane in Delhi, Mina's 11 year old daughter Teesha went to use the washroom but found it locked. Air Canada crew had not cleaned the toilet even though the boarding had already started. Teesha vomited slightly outside the washroom because the bathroom smelled of bad odour. The airline crew came screaming at the child and they were forced to deboard the plane deeming the child sick to travel long distance. Mina Mittal and her children, the complainants filed a complaint with State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Punjab. The judgment that was given recently questioned as to how the airline crew decided this without getting an opinion from the doctor of the airport dispensary. "The action of the Air Canada to deplane the complainants amounts to violation of human rights and child rights besides deficiency in service and unfair trade practice," the judgment said.
The judgment directed the opposite parties i.e. Jet Airways and Air Canada to pay a lump sum compensation of Rs. 35,00,000 i.e. Rs. 35 lacs, approximately USD $47,000 for mental agony, tension, harassment, mis-behaviour, humiliation and hardships faced by the complainants at the hands of the crew staff of the opposite parties. In addition, Rs. 22,000 is also to be paid to the complainant for litigation charges. The duty managers of Air Canada and Jet Airways were each directed to pay Rs. 10,000 to the complainants. Ms. Preeti, a ground staff crew member of Air Canada was also directed to pay Rs. 5,000 to the complainants.
