The Holiday Show and Sale features high-quality fiber art by more than 150 artists from Minnesota and across the country. Artwork ranges from unique knitted mittens, felted ornaments and beaded jewelry to stunning art quilts, woven placemats and shibori-dyed garments. No matter your holiday budget, you will find plenty to give and treasure. See the list of participating artists.

Featured Artist Marlene Meyer
Marlene Meyer, a nationally noted basket weaver, began her artistic journey in 1984. After studying with many fine weavers, she immersed herself in the pursuit of her own artistic style. Marlene says, "Creating things with your hands keeps you in touch with the world around you and the things that are really important in one's life."

Baskets that have beauty, texture and function are admired and appreciated by everyone. Marlene Meyer’s original designs have unique shapes, color and fibers that add an artistic dimension to the basic functionality of a basket. Weaving yarns into the form and embellishing with bits from nature and raku pottery melds Marlene's personal style of art with her great love of the outdoors.

Land by Hand: Artists Explore Place

Land By Hand catalogues are available for purchase in Textile Center Shop for $14.95.   Textile Center is touring an exhibition of fiber art created by Minnesota artists that have received national recognition for their work. Land by Hand: Artists Explore Place, organized by Textile Center and curated by Kimber Olson, is currently being exhibited at New York Mills Regional Cultural Center and will continue to tour to additional venues in Mankato and Lanesboro through June of 2012.

Artists whose work is featured are
  • Lettie Blackburn
  • Vernal Bogren-Swift
  • Morgan Clifford
  • Nancy Condon
  • Mary Hark
  • Jill Lynn
  • Bernadette Mahfood
  • Mary Mortenson
  • Sharon Meyer Postance
  • Christine Pradel-Lien
  • Karen Searle
  • Kathleen Smith
  • Bonnie Wedge
  • Sherri West
  • Jo Wood
In addition to the exhibition, each venue has the option to host three educational activities that are related to the exhibition works such as half-day classes, family day activities and/or artist lecture. These are presented by artists who have pieces in the exhibition or by experienced fiber art instructors from Textile Center. These activities are supported by a Legacy grant awarded through the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Through exhibition and education, Textile Center endeavors to bring fine fiber art to the people of Minnesota living outside the metropolitan area.

Karen Searle
Land by Hand Artist Spotlight: Karen Searle
Artist statement: I utilize the techniques of “women's work” to present the feminine view. My imagery is inspired by women’s lives and women’s bodies, and by the feminine impulse to nurture. My sense of humor enters into the creation process and becomes integral to many of the pieces. I think of my wire sculptures as 3-dimensional line drawings in space. The line and movement of the object and its shadow suggest the energy of a human presence. I think of my work with birch bark and other natural materials as a metaphor for women’s work and women's lives: all involve scavenging, mending, piecing-together and adorning.
