Alexander Rees
Alexander Rees Alexander Rees was born in Moscow, Russia. He received his Doctorate degree (DMA) at the famous Gnesin Institute (Russian Academy of Music) in Moscow and became a professor of viola, string quartet, and chamber music there. For 30 years he trained hundreds of students who have become well known professors in music conservatories, solo artists, and performers in major orchestras all over the world. He founded the Gnesin String Quartet.

Mr. Rees has performed on viola and viola d’amore, and toured extensively in the former Soviet Union and Europe. He appeared as a soloist, conductor, orchestra member, and chamber musician with the Borodin String Quartet, Svyatoslav Richter Bach Ensemble, Madrigal Baroque Ensemble, Moscow Symphony Orchestra (as principal violist), Symphony Orchestra of Russia, and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. In 1976 he won first prize at the Festival of Chamber Orchestras of USSR as the artistic director and conductor of the Moscow University Chamber Orchestra.

He has recorded with the Madrigal Baroque ensemble of Moscow and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and appeared in Moscow radio and Russian television broadcasts. He performed in a series of music history educational films available in VHS format produced by Cromwell Productions in England. In 1993 he immigrated to America and settled in New York City. His New York solo debut took place at Merkin Concert Hall in 1994 with the New American Chamber Orchestra. Alan Kozin of the New York Times wrote: "Alexander Rees played the solo viola line in Hindemith’s ‘Trauermusik’ with expressive intensity." Mr. Rees has continued his music career, as a solo and chamber music performer with the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Luke’s Orchestra, New York Virtuosi Orchestra, Bronx Arts Ensemble, Little Orchestra Society, and Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra. He has performed on major stages and at New York City landmarks, such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Rees has appeared in PBS, NBC, and CBS television broadcasts.

He is an adjunct professor at Fordham University and teaches music in his own private studio. In 2003 Mr. Rees was elected to the International Academy of Sciences, Education, Industry and Arts (U.S. Branch). In 2004, he was listed in the Contemporary Who's Who of Professionals 2004-2005 edition.
