Do all British people have bad teeth. Or does the U.S just have better dental care?

My teeth are great by the way and I'm British.

Do all British people have bad teeth. Or does the U.S just have better dental care?
I'm an American, but when I visited the UK I noticed that the British had better teeth than I expected! I'd guess that Americans have more orthodontic work, as I seemed to see more British people around with overbites, but I didn't notice the kind of discolored or rotten-looking teeth that Americans stereotypically associate with the British. Perhaps things were worse in the UK in the past.

However, if you compare British and American TV shows and movies there's a big difference in how the actors' teeth look. Hollywood actors get a lot of purely cosmetic dental work so they'll have very white, even teeth. For whatever reason this doesn't seem to be as big a concern for British actors.

I've sometimes heard Americans say that everyone in British TV shows seems to have horrible teeth, but they're actually quite ordinary looking teeth that really only seem bad in comparison to the "perfect" Hollywood teeth we're used to seeing on TV.
Reply:Not all, but a lot do. Most places in the U.S. put fluoride in the water which helps. My brother-in-law (UK) had dentures by the time he was 40.
Reply:The US has better dental care.
Reply:Why are you asking this question if you are British?
Reply:Not all Americans have great teeth. Remember those joke teeth "Billy Bob" teeth? The teeth are all wonky. Based on American teeth. Sort of a take off on hill billies

I think that most actors on American TV look too perfect, perfect white teeth (costs a fortune), hair, bodies, implants, clothes, whereas British programmes have actors that look like "average" people (and much better actors for that matter) and not perfect.

Compare something simple like soap operas: Young and the Restless vs. Coronation Street. Miles apart.
Reply:I was told that although the brits teeth can often appear grey in color, their teeth are actually healthier because they don't bleach them and use excessive amounts of flouride which is actually poisonous.

How true that is, I'm not sure because I am not a dentist.

I also know that Brits drink more tea (which stains teeth but is healthier than drinking soda all day).
Reply:I always thought that was a stereotype. I have seen plenty of people in the U.S with some horrible teeth. There is no way that you are in your twenties and your teeth are falling out and brown.
Reply:Hi Marc I am delighted your teeth are great

but I still think the Americans beat us.

All the American people I have seen have beautiful teeth, and I always give credit where is due. Sorry to disappoint you.
