Characters That Made My Year – Victorique de Blois (Twelve Days of Christmas: Day Three)

December 16, 2011

Day Three, and its time for a character that it’s really hard to dislike (even if her show was somewhat lacklustre) – the moeblob that is Victorique De Blois from GOSICK.

Victorique is adorable.  I don’t really have a lot of reasons for including her other than her moe was such that even I found her adorable, and believe me that is an achievement.  This year had three shows that followed a similar format of a hyper-intelligent loli detective and her male side-kick (Gosick, Kami-sama no Memo-chou & Dantalian no Shoka), but of the three loli’s Victorique was without doubt my favourite – Alice didn’t get enough screentime or development, and Dalian (even though her show was my favourite of the three) was also quite shallow; however Victorique went through quite a lot of changes and it made her even more likeable as the show went on.

Gosick wasn’t a brilliant show.  It was tedious to an extreme for much of it’s first half, saved only by Victorique’s adorableness, but it did pick up quite a lot in the second half and reached a very satisfying finale.  Victorique starts as quite a standoffish, aloof character who doesn’t really have much clue about how to interact with people normally (understandable given her childhood was spent locked in a tower with little to no human contact).  Victorique’s vast intellect and deduction skills also place her on a pedestal that cause the people who should care for her, her family, to treat her  like a resource to be mined rather than a little girl.  Victorique’s interaction with the clueless outcast Kujou bring her out of her shell, as he refuses to treat her in any special manner (other than being alarmingly willing to be treated as her personal doormat) since Kujou is just happy to find someone that will talk to him normally as well.  While I can’t profess to like Kujou in anyway (he’s really the pinnacle of the bland male lead phenomenon) watching the two characters change and open up to each other over the run of the show was the main reason I stuck Gosick out to the end.

The moment I’ve chosen as my favourite for Victorique comes in episode 12.  This is essentially a filler episode as nothing noteworthy really happens, its just Kujou and Victorique enjoying some downtime between mysteries together.  It’s the way that Victorique tries so hard to appear mature and not let on how much she is enjoying being out of the library and just hanging out with Kujou that I found unbelievably cute – she tries so hard, but still slips into moments of childish glee when presented with presents of sweets.  So simple, but very effective and really solidified Victorique as one of my favourite characters this year.

Episode 12 is probably my favorite episode so far too (I still have a few eps to go before I’m finished). Loving Gosick, and Victorique is a wonderful character. I also like Kujo a lot, and think the two really belong together.
Best thing about Victorique is probably her voice acting. Aoi Yuuki absolutely nailed her role as Victorique, and is definitely one of the best performances I’ve heard in anime.

The final few episodes are much better in terms of plot for Gosick, but ep12 is probably my favourite stand-alone episode as it’s just Victorique & Kujou enjoying some time together.

Aoi Yuuki was sensational as Victorique – she shows quite a lot of range as Victorique swings through a lot of emotions & has a lot of quirks.

I enjoyed Gosick. I agree with you that it had a great ending, and that the strength of the show is the way Victorique grows (by depending on — or learning to rely upon — Kujo).

I also agree with @Cholisose above that Aoi Yuuki did a wonderful job in performing Victorique; Aoi has an incredible range, from a surprisingly low tone to squeaky high tones. For Victorique, she uses the deeper parts of her range, especially when Victorique is angry with Kujo.

I always like when a voice actress decided to voice a loli with a surprisingly deep & mature tone rather than the standard supersonic squeak most seem to go for. Just giving Victorique a more expressive and varied tone of voice made her come alive much more than any other similar character – definitely a stand out role for Aoi Yuuki.

I don’t know when Victorique started to grow on me, but she ended up to be my favorite character when the show ended. It was pretty surprising since I found Victorique to be annoying and egoist at first. I probably like her because, the same with you, of the development that Victorique undergoes. You can see in every episode how she changes little by little, unconsciously letting Kujou to enter her untouchable territory. Her changes are not fast-paced, which is definitely a plus for me.There were moments where I was really frustrated with Victorique’s excessive tsundere character (to the point where she’s really rude), but I try not to dwell on it since she turned out all right in the end.

I never really disliked Victorique at any stage – was indifferent to her at the start (was indifferent to the entire series for quite a while actually), but she really grew on me as her development felt natural and believable. The tsundere stuff was okay for me, because you have to remember that Victorique has had very little human contact & isn’t really sure how to deal with someone who treats her as an equal. She covers her discomfort by being demanding and haughty (although Kujou doesn’t really help matters by being a complete doormat for most of the time), so it’s only when Kujou stops caving to her every demand and she spends more time interacting with people normally that she gets over that tsundere phase.

Hah, I actually ‘watched’ Episode 12 blind (by actually not looking at the screen), to see what music does in anime. Compared to something like Nichijou, or really any other anime at all, Gosick was musically dull, especially that episode.

But… I haven’t watched past that (I’ve all the episodes downloaded on my computer, just haven’t gotten to it). Victorique looks like a bland female lead focused on purely her moe parts; is this what you thought too at the end of the first cour? Does she become far more likeable after that? Because right now, I don’t feel too strongly about her at all..

Gosick isn’t an anime that I can actually recommend to anyone. It’s dull to a criminal extent in it’s first half and the 2nd half is only better because stuff actually starts to happen. For me I liked Victorique practically from the beginning, so she kept me watching (and she does go through quite a bit of character development) – however if you don’t find her charming now, you never will so give Gosick a miss!

But there are definitely redeeming aspects about the second half that aren’t about Victorique, right?

        ._.

Well Kujo gets a bit more bearable & the main plot kicks in – which is pretty interesting. I did like the ending too – quite heartwarming,
