Casey James is at singer-song writer who has played with blue grass, blues, rock, country, and metal bands.

He’s originally from Cool, TX and now lives in Fort Worth. Casey is 27 years old and has two Basset hounds named Daisy James and Buster Douglas James.

Here is an interview where he talks about his musical influences, excerpted from Idol Chatter on USA Today:

Most recent download: Rise, Will Dailey
Musical influences: Ronnie Bowman, Harry Connick Jr., Frank Sinatra, James Taylor, Chris Cornell. “My favorite singer is Doyle Bramhall II.”
Best judge’s compliment: “Randy said something to the effect of thinking of me as a singer/songwriter and that coming across. That was a huge compliment coming from somebody like that, that has seen all these people and knows all this stuff.”
Criticism he needed to hear: “During the first audition, Simon was pretty hard on me about my presence. I was really, really horrible in that first audition, and it was pretty apparent. I need to present myself confidently and really be there. In the subsequent rounds, you can hopefully see that change was made, and I’m continuously working on that.”
Song he’d love to sing that’s not a good fit: Light My Way, Audioslave
Theme night he’d enjoy: “I’ve played in heavy metal bands, bluegrass bands, rock bands, country bands, blues bands, acoustic bands, folk bands. So pretty much any kind of category is going to be cool with me. The only things I’m really not familiar with would be show tunes and things like that.”
Theme night he’d be anxious about: Broadway
Most proud of: “I hope this doesn’t sound arrogant, but the person that I’ve become. I used to be deeply selfish and really didn’t think about the big picture. Now I really strive to treat people the way I want to be treated and be respectful.”

Why should he be the next Idol? “My dedication to music. Any one of the top 24 deserve it and can make it. The only reason I feel like I deserve it is that this is what I do. It’s what I’ve done my whole life. I’ve never wanted to do anything but music.”
This article from the Mineral Wells Index is a good introduction to Casey:

Cool Casey

Casey James puts Cool on the map and music career on fast track with selection to ‘American Idol’ top 24

By Libby Cluett Mineral Wells Index

MINERAL WELLS — Tuesday night on “American Idol” was “cool” according to judges, when they heard of contestant Casey James’ hometown.

When he explained to judges in a matter-of-fact tone that Cool, Texas, was between Weatherford and Mineral Wells, James put Cool on the Idol map.

After he covered Colbie Caillat’s song “Bubbly,” James became one of seven announced Tuesday as moving on to Season 9’s top 24 – something online spoiler alerts pegged several weeks ago.

James, 27, now lives in Fort Worth, but hails from Cool and is a Millsap High School graduate, with a singing history dating back to elementary school.

Many of his close friends, from Mineral Wells, Cool, Millsap and all the way to Fort Worth knew about his advancement to next week’s audience-voting portion of the show, but couldn’t tell.

Mineral Wells resident and friend Jeff Bridgeman has kept up with James and knew of his rise through the Idol process, but said, “Until last night he couldn’t say anything, but I knew he made Hollywood.”

“He’s a very deserving young man,” he said. “He’s a fine young man, and you can start seeing that in the show. He’s first and foremost a musician – a musician that sings.”

James played locally at venues like the Crazy Water Festival and the H2JO Coffee House in Mineral Wells.

“Casey was always a beautiful performer who was all about the music,” said Ninfa Holly, former H2JO owner. “He played for tips and frozen hot chocolate at H2JO and seemed happy to have a place to play his music.

“We tried to get him to audition for ‘American Idol’ back then, but he just said no,” she added. “I am feeling (Idol judge) Kara DioGuardi’s love for Casey!”

“(Co-owner) Amy Hopkins and I have always known he was something special and I still have an autographed poster from when he played the coffee house that says, ‘Don’t sell this for a million dollars now that I am famous.’”

James comes from a family of musicians.

Friend and former Mineral Wells resident Cassie Gossett said James and his brother, Billy, have a band together and play in Fort Worth.

“They’re great guys,” she said. “Casey is one of the most amazing people. The more you get to know him, the more you fall in love with him.”

“When Casey sings he sounds like an angel,” she added. “He’s so talented and gifted. He’s had to overcome so much. It’s all about the music – it’s his heart and soul.”

In an interview after his Denver audition, James credited his mother, Debra James – a musician and registered nurse – for encouraging him to try out for “American Idol.”

“He’s been doing this a long time,” his mother told the Index. “He was actually humming tunes in the crib before he could talk,” she added. “I was worried about him because he just wasn’t talking.” So she said she told a friend who was visiting. “She said ‘Debra there’s nothing wrong with that child, come here and listen.’ So we stood by the door and he was humming the ‘MASH’ theme song,” which she said they frequently had on the TV.

“We all play and sing,” she said of her sons, who were seven years apart in age, Casey being the youngest.

“I’ve been hauling him to concerts before he could see the stage,” she said, recalling that either she or her older son, Billy, would raise him to see. “He always wanted to see who was playing the guitar.”

Debra James was a single mother going to nursing school when the TV went out in a storm.

“We didn’t have a TV [after that]. I was going to school and training to be a nurse so we spent time playing instruments or reading,” she said.

“I bought him a Stratocaster guitar when he was 16 and within a year, he was playing gigs in front of people,” she said.

She had a band, in which both of her sons played – she on keyboard, Billy on bass guitar and Casey on lead guitar and both mom and Casey sang.

One of Casey’s first gigs was at the Crazy Water Festival, playing in his mother’s family band, called “The King James Band.” Debra James said his tennis coach called him “King James.”

Last year, she said she had the opportunity to play with Casey from May to November.

“It was bittersweet for me, because it was the last time I’d play with him – he’s out of my league,” Debra James said. “But that’s a good thing.”

“I’ve been in the music circles in this area a while and I’ve seen so many musicians [try to make it]. I wanted more for my son and unless you have a ton of money, it’s impossible to get a break. So, I really wanted more for him than to just play locally,” she said of encouraging him try out for “American Idol.”

She suggested it, “But he said he’s not into top 40 tunes, he listens to what is good. I kept bugging him.”

“He missed the Dallas audition and we have family in Denver. He said he didn’t think his car could take him, so I handed him the keys to my truck,” she said. “I just wanted someone to see him.”

“I told him, ‘You have everything to gain and nothing to lose.’ So he went up to Denver and the rest is history. It is an amazing thing. I knew in my heart he was supposed to go,” said James’ mother.

She said she’s not shocked he made it this far, but called the moment and his appearance on TV “very surreal” and “very humbling.”

“He’s been through a lot and to see this wonderful thing happen for him is more than any mother could every hope for him, especially a single mom.

“I was so hoping his success would encourage single moms,” she said. “You always wonder if you’re doing things right, because it’s just you. You wonder if you’re making mistakes. I think this is a victory for single moms, that good things can happen through all your struggles.”

“There were just so many nights and days that I was wondering if I was doing the right thing and hoped my kids would turn out all right and I wouldn’t ruin them. It’s a scary feeling [sometimes] you think nothing good could happen if it’s just you, but that isn’t right,” she added.

Back in Denver

After mixed reviews in his Denver audition – including James’ notable shirt removal, prompted by judges DioGuardi and Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham – Randy Jackson encouraged James to find some “sharp persona pills” when he returned.

The next week, he impressed judges with his rendition of Ray Charles’ 1966 blues hit “I Don’t Need No Doctor.”

He needed a doctor several years ago.

In one of his Idol interviews, James mentioned a motorcycle wreck about six years ago and showed his scars, saying he wasn’t sure after his wreck if he would play the guitar again.

Bridgeman said he helped James recuperate after the near-fatal wreck that left James with compound fractures to his left wrist and right femur.

“It was terrible,” he said of James’ injuries, which occurred in a motorcycle wreck on State Highway 51, south of Weatherford. “Casey was test driving a motorcycle at 50 mph and a pickup flipped a [U-turn] in front of him and [James] hit the pickup.”

Debra James said her son was in a wheelchair for six months.

James had other talents, beyond music.

“He was a really good tennis player, but his devotion to the guitar overshadowed everything. He loved the guitar more than anything,” she said.

Dick McClintic, James’ Millsap High School tennis coach, recalled the young musicians’ talents and character.

He called James a “fun kid who wore his hair long back then, too.” When asked about Casey taking off his shirt in his Denver Idol audition, McClintic said, “That was Casey. He didn’t bat an eye. He’ll do whatever he has to do.”

McClintic told the Index James’ locker was right outside his door. He asked James if he wanted to try out for the tennis team in 1999 and said James was game.

The new tennis recruit “played and practiced very, very hard,” said the coach.

In his junior year, James beat Brock High School’s number 2 seeded player. Knowing the Millsap coach, the Brock player came to him. “He was devastated,” McClintock said of James’ opponent. “He said, ‘I don’t mind losing, but I had to lose to a guy who wears pink tennis shoes.’”

“That was Casey,” the coach added. “He always marched to the tune of a different drummer.”

Idol in town?

Rumors abounded that Idol camera crews were in Mineral Wells two weeks ago.

According to Bridgeman, who keeps up via e-mail and text message, James is “getting geared up” for the voting portion, but spent a few weeks recently in Fort Worth.

“He’s a very deserving young man,” said Bridgeman. “He’s a fine young man, and you can start seeing that in the show. He’s first and foremost a musician – a musician that sings.”

“Whether this works out or not, I’m still going to continue to play music,” James said early on in his Idol journey. “This is what I do [he said of music] this is what I love.”

Debra James is trying to gather the expenses to travel to Hollywood next week. She said her employer, the Decatur Behavioral Unit where she works as a psychiatric nurse, has been accommodating.

“I’ve driven a million miles to see that kid and load and unload equipment and I’m not missing this gig,” she said.

Bridgeman has no doubts about James’ intent to go all the way and do what it takes.

“He is one of the most competitive individuals you’ll ever meet,” he said, which he based mostly on playing Tiger Woods golf on X-Box with James.

“I guarantee you he’s in it to win it,” said Bridgeman.

  1. Great looking Casey James fan site. All of us Millsap folk are pushing hard for Casey. We’re ready to fight tooth & nail when we see/hear negative comments. Hopefully he will stay true to his style during this process despite what the judges think. I attended Millsap High w/ Casey’s brother & remember him even though he was in Jr. High when I graduated. This American Idol thing is really got our little town excited & know he has what it takes to go all the way. Thanks for your support. Keep on spreading the word.

    • We have got to get everyone voting!! There’s a website that publishes vote totals and Casey’s is way lower than it should be. He is so talented and he should win this competition. Get everyone you know to vote–the whole two hours. I did it and logged in about 250 votes. But we need millions–so let’s get busy! Casey is very talented and has a great personality and deserves to win. And I’m in line to see him in Denver!

  2. Thanks Jake. I intend to keep spreading the word about Casey. I’m a huge supporter of him and Texas music in general. Let me know if you come across anything you think I should post and tell everyone to vote for Casey!

    • Will do, I have already forwarded on your site to his cousin & others. I was impressed with all the info & photos. You really do your homework! Believe me we are all pushin’ for votes you should see all of our FaceBook pages on voting nights.

      • Thanks again! Next week is extra crucial because its for Top 12 and its still gender-split. We still have 4 boys from Texas in the mix, so every vote is going to count. I have faith in Casey, though, so I’ll try not to get too paranoid. 🙂

  3. I love this site .. I look forward to your posts everyday!! Thanks for doing this=)

I really pray that casey will win AI9!! ^_^

    Thank you=)

  4. Casey and Crystal should be first and second place. It does not matter if you can win at the two levels. They are also the most talented muicians that know their own voices. Casey should go far as we have watched every show and we vote over and over every Tuesday nite but you must get the state voting every Tuesday. I have said they both are good they both are great—Casey has stage presence, beautiful voice, great looking everything a recording label should want. I have tired to tell others that the other idols are beginners compared to Casey and Crystal. I have a son in Nashville and Casey can get anyone label there is to sign him. He is ready to make an album and so is Crystal with not much effort. I will buy both albums as I have bought both their songs and videos on Itune they have . The judges know how talented they are and Casey needs to make really good song choices as I believe Simon, Randy and Kara know they are real deal. The other have background in church, or high school choir but are not The American Idol—they need someone that will sell albumns and are not going to be a one album wonder, then it is over. So anyone you know need to vote. I have been able everytime I get on the phone—it needs to be busy.

  5. What a voice. best of luck with the rest of the show. im a fan and simply enjoy your type of music. i would never pretend to be a person who knows music. i listen and i enjoy. casey this canadian boy sure likes what i hear. you playing is simply out of this world. if you yourself reads this or someone else that can pass a suggestion along. please do. i know your very very busy but please take the time to listen to jason aldeans song.. grown women. i believe it suits your voice and you can sure as heck play it. make it yours and watch the votes come in. thanks and best of luck .

  6. Hiya! Thank you SO MUCH for this amazing site! Really appreciate getting to know a little more about the Legend Casey James!! I’ve said this so often on all sorts of different blogs, and I’ll say it again… Casey, you are the whole package! You were born for a time such as this!! We are way over in sunny South Africa so we can’t vote, but you’re in our prayers every step of the way!! Right from your origional interview with Victoria Beckham & co, we knew you were this year’s winner. I strongly believe that you’ll get to the heights of Bon Jovi, Brian Adams, etc and, like them, you’ll still be HUGE in 25/30+ years…. Looking forward to buying all your CD’s and even seeing you in concert if you do an international tour…or if we can get over to the states ~ a life long dream! Know you’re loved & prayed for Casey 🙂 Mrs James…. I think you’re awesome!! As a mum of 5 (4 sons) I can’t express how much I admire how Casey sticks to his principles ~ I read how you always worried about how your boys would turn out… well look at them now! You’ve done an amazing job! If my children grow up with a pinch of the grounding Casey has, I’ll know I’ve succeeded!! Thanks for pushing him into AI and sharing him with the world!! Love & God Bless 🙂

  7. I am from Texas, too. I think Casey is just awesome. What a nice guy, quite humble it seems….I tivo all the shows only to replay Casey’s songs..What a fabulous musician you are and you look like you are on top of the world watching you…you have a good voice, and deserve to be signed on a label….stay true to yourself, Casey, you are really in your element.. you belong on stage….what a handsome guy you are….not hard to dream about you……I want you to win, go out and show them who you really are…..and you will……love ya

  10. i am not from texas. i am tired though. the lord is my only inspiration. didn’t even want to watch idol this year. i enjoy GOOD music and it just has been the same old same old. but its a mommy daughter thing. . so glad we watched it or i would have missed one of the most inspiring individuals i’ve seen on tv..MR. CASEY JAMES. it has been totally worth it. i wanted to see him win so bad. i actually stayed up late voting till the busy tone ended it. and have bought every casey tune and looked for more other places. and to make things better he has an awesome family. i feel better about life today, because of following the trail of this talented and decent musician. awesome family. miss debra..you did well!!

  11. He should have won, but at least now he can go and do his own thing, because if he had won, he would be more under Simon Cowell`s control and simon was convinced he was something he`s not. At least now he can make a cd of his own style. I like him, he`s not like anyone else

  12. I went on a horseriding holiday and stayed in a 16th century guesthouse with my friends from Pony Club and the room was said to be haunted. We did a oija board and it worked and freaked us all out and we could hear a lot of noises so I got my i pod out and we all sat on one bed and listened to Casey singing! My friends like him too and Emily randomly shouts out “Texas Guy” whenever I mention him!
