"Mary Gregory" Glass is one of the most popularly collected categories of Victorian and early 20th century glass. Sometimes known as poor man's Cameo Glass, at it's finest, it certainly fools some people!!

Quite simply though, the decoration is a hand painted white enamel which is applied to glass after it is blown, generally it is fired on, sometimes in several layers which give a greater depth to the figures. This layered style also gives rise to it being likened to the Pate-sur-Pate style of porcelain decoration, fashionable in the late 19th  century.

The origins of Mary Gregory as a name for this style of decoration are lost in the myths of time, there was one such named lady who worked as a decorator for one of the American glass factories, however she finished working before glass of this style came out in the late 19th century.

One thing is beyond doubt though, it was always very popular and is still greatly sought after today, we are pleased to be able to offer over 40 pieces (of various colours) for sale at the gallery and have included a good selection here.

    Beware of reproduction!!
We only sell OLD Mary Gregory Glass
