NGC 4921 in the Coma galaxy cluster. A low surface brightness spiral galaxy with very few star forming regions. Note the many distant galaxies in the background. NGC 4923 is lower left.

Previously classed as an irregular galaxy. Cigar shaped M82 is known to have 2 symmetric spiral arms . This starburst galaxy tidally distorted by its pass to the close spiral M81 is 12 million light years from Earth. It also has a ‘Supergalactic’ wind emanating from its core.

FAULKES TELESCOPE GALLERY OF INTERACTING GALAXY PAIRS, COLLIDING AND TIDALLY WARPED GALAXIES

NGC 520 A pair of galaxies in collision. At 100 million light years from Earth, this object is also catalogued as ARP 157.

Polar Ring galaxy NGC 660 at 24 million light years away.  The small face on spiral (left) is 1.2 billion light years distant.

NGC 772

NGC 1275 A cD galaxy at the heart of the Perseus cluster 235 million light years away.  Dust lanes and star forming regions are from an edge on galaxy at least 200,000 light years in front of NGC 1275.

NGC 613 A spiral galaxy with tidally warped arms.

Close pair NGC 2207 with IC 2163

….

The ‘Antennae’ colliding galaxies (NGC 4038/9) at 45 million light years away are our closest pair of this type. Lying in the constellation of Corvus, the galaxies are a treat for anyone with a medium to large telescope.
