Notes:

1861 - Boring operations from the surface were in progress on the Wheatley Hill estate to prove the site for the proposed new winning.

1869 - Wheatley Hill Colliery was sunk from the surface to the Busty Seam.

1870 - A holing was made in the Main Coal Seam between Thornley and Wheatley Hill Collieries.

Description

Wheatley Hill Colliery, situated in the township of Wingate, was taken over, in 1885, by the Weardale Iron and Coal Company, Limited. The following seams are met : the Five Quarter and Main Coal (these seams are exhausted) ; Low Main, 3 feet 1 inch at the shaft, tapering to 1 foot 6 inches, at a depth of 148 fathoms ; Hutton, 3 feet 3 inches in thickness, 166 fathoms ; Harvey, 3 feet 10 inches, 190 fathoms ; and the Busty, 4 feet 2 inches, 195 fathoms. Output 350 tons per day, employing 170 men and boys.

Barker, Thomas, 24 Oct 1910, aged 64, Stoneman, Along with other two men he was arranging a flat sheet at the face of a Longwall gateway, when a fall of stone came away from the canch and caught him. Bell, Joseph, 29 Dec 1922, (accident: 03 Nov 1922), aged 16, He hurt himself while lifting a tub of coal onto the rails on 3rd Nov. He died in Hartlepool Hospital on 29th Dec. An inquest jury returned a verdict of death from "natural causes" after medical evidence showed he died from tubercular disease of the hip joint.

Clarkson, Robert, 15 Jun 1909, aged 41, Filler, There being no coal cut by the coal cutting machine, he was sent into a longwall gateway to hew with another man. The overman and deputy had examined the gateway some twenty minutes prior to the man going in to hew. He was casting coal when a stone 17 feet long, 4½ feet wide, and 22 inches thick, fell from a damp slippery parting and struck him on the head, fracturing his skull

Douglass, Thomas, 11 Feb 1914, aged 30, Stoneman, Deceased and his mate were sent to fire a shot in a gateway canch, the previous shot having been fired 3 weeks before. Whilst drilling, a large stone from the side fell on to deceased, inflicting severe injuries, from which he died the same day in the hospital. The stone at the place was full of slips and coal pipings, and hence weak.

Hazell, James, 31 Dec 1910, aged 59, Platelayer, Whilst cleaning up on the colliery railway sidings, he was knocked down and run over by a N.E.R. engine. The engine, with van behind, was moving slowly without steam down a gentle gradient round a slight curve, and the driver had not noticed the deceased. A colliery locomotive was at the same time pushing some full waggons on a parallel line near where the deceased was working, and it is surmised that in stepping away from the colliery engine he had moved in front of the N.E. engine. There was a space of 12 feet between the two roads

Howe, William, 03 Nov 1921, aged 26, Stoneman, He was travelling in a bus to collect his pay note from the colliery offices. On arriving at the pit, he asked the conductress to wait a minute or two, then, he dashed out from behind the bus and was knocked and killed by a lorry.

Hunter, Swinburne, 29 Apr 1931, (accident: 20 Apr 1931), Shaftman, at the inquest Mrs. Jane Hunter said her husband had come home from work on 20 April suffering from pain in his side, stating that he had sprained himself at work. He and Joseph Plant had been lifting a large baulk of timber, when Hunter shouted that he had felt a 'click' in his side. Later, on 27 April, he developed pneumonia from which he died. A verdict of 'Death from natural causes' was returned as there was not enough evidence to show that the strain had accelerated the pneumonia

Hutchinson, John, 11 Aug 1879, (accident: 30 Jul 1879), aged 24, Fireman, He was seriously injured while changing the points on the waggonway; He was run over by some waggons and suffered a compound fracture of his left leg, a broken foot and a dislocated ankle. Surgeon William Nesbitt set the fractures and dressed the ankle, but later the same day he had to amputate the foot at the ankle joint due to haemorrhaging. Hutchinson then seemed to be progressing favourably, but tetanus set in and he died on 11th August

Jones, John William, 31 Jan 1917, (accident: 09 Oct 1911), aged 64, Coal Filler, On 9 Oct 1911, Jones suffered injuries to his head and shoulders when he was caught by a fall of stone. He was off work for 31 weeks, then resumed as a waggonwayman until Nov 1916. He returned home and complained of pains and loss of eyesight, and was confined to bed. Death was due to aortic valvular disease of the heart, accelerated by the injury to the head

Mangles, James, 15 Oct 1928, (accident: 20 Sep 1919), aged 37, he was injured by a fall of stone on 20th Sept 1919. His left arm was fractured and his left leg injured. After treatment at Durham County Hospital, he underwent an operation at Newcastle Infirmary. An inquest into his death was held on 15 Oct 1928. Death was due to heart failure and septic absorption arising from the injury [date of inquest]

Prentice, James, Mar 1915, (accident: 22 Apr 1903), aged 37, Locomotive Fireman, On 15th March an inquest was held in the Reading Room, Wheatley Hill into the death of James Prentice who was injured in an accident while working at the colliery on 22nd April 1903. His spine was fractured and his left hand had to be amputated. He never worked again, and for the last two years had been confined to bed.

Renwicks, Peter, 08 Sep 1914, (accident: 28 Aug 1914), aged 61, Stoneman, Deceased and his mate were taking down baulks and resetting them at a higher level. A baulk was held by end pressure, so that when the end props were removed it did not fall. Deceased was loosening one end with his pick, when the baulk and stone lying above it, fell away. Loose stones fell on to his feet, so that he fell heavily on his back, fracturing his pelvis. A middle prop should have been used. He died on 8th September, 1914

Rowley, Thomas, 16 Nov 1910, (accident: 08 Jun 1910), aged 59, Shifter, He was building a pack wall in a gateway and had his back to the coal while he was ridding a top canch shot. In attempting to lift a large stone he slipped and fell, and the stone pinned him against the wall. He complained of pain in the chest and back but there was not any external sign of injury. He did not work again and died on November 16th. As the result of a post-mortem examination, the jury found that he had died from heart failure accelerated by the accident which occurred to him three months previously, Buried: Harton Cemetery, South Shields

Shaw, John, 25 Apr 1916, (accident: 11 Apr 1916), aged 64, He was injured on 11 Aprl and taken to hospital, where he remained for eleven days before being discharged and taken home, he died on 25 Apr. He had been knocked down by a pony when a set of tubs got off the way. The first tub passed over him and he was found lying under the second, having suffered head injuries. Death was due to 'septic pneumonia resulting from the accident'

Stoker, Robert, 18 May 1916, (accident: 27 Mar 1915), aged 68, Shifter, He injured himself on 27 Mar 1915 while lifting a tub. He had 'exhausted himself and strained himself in the head owing to there being so much debris in the tub which had got off the way.' As a result, he was laid up in bed until August, when he was able to get out in an invalid carriage. His condition deteriorated and he took to his bed in March 1916, and died on 18 May. At the inquest a verdict was returned of death from ceberal haemorrhage, accelerated by a strain caused by the exertion of endeavouring to lift a full tub on to the waggonway whilst following his employment in the Harvey Seam of Wheatley Hill No. 1 Pit, Buried: Wheatley Hill Cemetery

Thornton, William, 14 Dec 1912, aged 41, Boiler Minder, he was shortening a belt used for driving a mechanical stoker from an overhead shafting and was probably standing on the feed pipes with the belt hanging round him, while he drove in the rivets against the wall; the belt caught in the boltheads of a shaft coupling close to the pulley sheaves, and being around him, pulled him up to the shafting, causing injuries from which he died on December 14; there was no reason why he should not have stopped the shafting to do this work; since the accident all similar couplings have been covered over
