Setting up a wireless access point

this procedure describes how to set up the various aspects of a wireless network

before using this procedure you will need
- to choose the network name (SSID) of your wireless network
- to decide whether to have a wireless network key (or password) on your wireless network
- to decide wether your wireless network should be restricted so that it can only be used by particular computers
notes
there are many wireless products and all have different methods for configuration. this procedure cannot describe each one and so is very general in nature.
procedure
- View the configuration of your wireless access point while connected to . you will usually do this through an internet browser such as internet explorer or netscape navigator.
- Enter the SSID that you have chosen for your network.
- There may be an option to stop your access point from broadcasting the SSID. We recommend that you don't broadcast the SSID because if you do, someone near your network could connect without your knowledge.
- You should be able to create a WEP or WPA Network Key. This is effectively the password for your network. All the settings on your other wireless equipment will need to match the settings on your access point for your wireless network to work.
- You should also be able to restrict the other wireless equipment that can use your wireless network. This will be under a section in your configuration called 'ACCESS CONTROL' or 'MAC ADDRESS CONTROL'. The MAC address is a completely unique reference number that is attached to every network card. You should be able to create a list of MAC addresses that are allowed to use your wireless network.
