"Hawk's Roosting" and "Golden Retrievals"

Hawk’s Roosting:

Egocentric

Sure of itself

Depicted as a powerful creature

Strong use of diction for description

Golden Retrievals:

Not as intelligent as the hawk but not as self centered either

Diction in the first part represents the dog’s short attention span

The dog is concerned about its owner too

Represents how humans are so concerned about tomorrow and lost in their thoughts that they forget to enjoy the little things in life

Depicts how the dog’s job is to bring the owner back from their thoughts.

Depicts how a dog is a man’s true best friend

Thesis: The “Hawk’s Roosting” depicts the hawk as an egocentric character while “Golden Retrievals” illustrates the dog as a character concerned about its surroundings. The authors characterize these two animals through diction, metaphor and symbolism.
