To block the ads in the buddy list window of MSN Live Messenger:
- Go to the Control Panel
- Double-click on Internet Options
- Select the Security tab and click on Restricted sites
- Click on the Sites button below and add
rad.msn.comto the zone. Click on Close and the ads should disappear.
Alternatively, you can completely remove the ad elements.

or use HOSTS file,In XP and Vista, it is normally located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
open it with Notepad or any other text editor
add the following lines to the bottom of your HOSTS file:

127.0.0.1 rss.video.msn.com
127.0.0.1 ads1.msn.com
127.0.0.1 rad.live.com
127.0.0.1 specials.uk.msn.com
I wouldn’t add..
127.0.0.1 rad.msn.com
127.0.0.1 global.msads.net
127.0.0.1 rss.video.msn.com
127.0.0.1 ads1.msn.com
127.0.0.1 rad.live.com
127.0.0.1 specials.uk.msn.com
..to the hosts file as it will open up all the ad servers
Add this instead..
0.0.0.0 rad.msn.com
0.0.0.0 global.msads.net
0.0.0.0 rss.video.msn.com
0.0.0.0 ads1.msn.com
0.0.0.0 rad.live.com
0.0.0.0 specials.uk.msn.com

Would it not be easier just to add all those sites to the restricted sites?
Tim: It’s a question about tastes. If you do it in the hosts-file, you can easily copy the hosts-file to another computer – it’ll take a little more time using the restricted sites in Internet Explorer. Besides that, if you do it the hosts-file way, the ad servers will be blocked for ALL programs (even Firefox, however, it’s nicer to use Adblock Plus 🙂

This only works partially. Some ads are still getting through. Does anyone have the full list of msn ad servers that need to be blocked? I’m thinking microsoft is bouncing their ads off of other servers to avoid being blocked.

*Update: I couldn’t get the text ads to go away via either putting them in Restricted sites or even in the hosts file. In the end I had to block them on my router, which is very easy to do if you install Tomato firmware on your router. See this thread for how to use your router to block MSN Live Messenger ads:

Since this blocks ads on all computers connected thru the router, and you can even add scripts to auto-update a blocklist for thousands of ad-related websites (similar to Adblock but for all applications instead of just firefox!), and since a router is usually very helpful with NAT as a shield, it may be worth using one that can run Tomato or other firmware that can filter websites.

That freaky ads drove me mad when I wanted to move the mouse to one of the system tray icons (as I use MSN in the right as a tall bar), it very often raised that big ads that show up on mouse over. That’s really annoying in any circumstance, it should have at least a 1-2 second timeout before opening the ad.
I wonder next they will make a page on the browser open ‘on mouse over’. Screw them.
About the other solution with ‘hosts’ file change, I am sure leaving them all 127.0.0.1 will block effectively as the ads will be attempted from your own host, which normally does not listen on port 80, thus a page load error will happen quickly. Although technically are differences, purpose speaking there is no difference on using 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0… as well as listing them on the restricted sites. Although the hosts solution is a matter of taste, the post from Phiber_Optic blamed a correct solution for no reason.
I’m pretty sure that 0.0.0.0 is better simply because there is no chance of a delay as opposed to 127.0.0.1 where if you had a web server operating it would clog up your server with useless requests, even if you do not run a server 0.0.0.0 is still faster as the connection to 0.0.0.0 would terminate a lot quicker than the timeout from trying to connect to 127.0.0.1
127.0.0.1 will not solve it of you have Tor or some server installed. With Tor enabled, they will go through there and be solved which is somewhat tricky but useless and a bit stupid. You still get ads but served through proxies just like everything else.
I guess 0.0.0.0 is better, you see, there is a difference since 127.0.0.1 is your default localhost.
