FEBRUARY 02,03,16 BARBADOS HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S ANNUAL OPEN GARDENS PROGRAMME CONTINUES Open Gardens

FEBRUARY 05 OPEN HOUSE: MULLINS MILL ST. PETER Is it the charm of the main house's unique design, incorporating a 17th century sugar mill? Is it the beauty of its site, the magnificent views of the West Coast, or the personality evident in its decor? Whatever the main appeal, Mullins Mill has it, and is back on the schedule by popular demand. Although the sprawling luxury property is often available to rent, it retains a personal and welcoming ambience that will make it hard to leave. We thank Realtors, Ltd., for arranging this visit. Open House

FEBRUARY 12 OPEN HOUSE: HALTON PLANTATION HOUSE, ST. PHILIP After nearly 5 years of meticulous restoration, Halton is ready to be seen! The oldest section of the house dates from the 1600s and was probably the manager's house. After 1831, a beautifully proportioned Caribbean Georgian structure was added. By the time Tony and Carol Milsom bought it in 1998, it needed more than just repairs. They also remodelled, adding bathrooms, a pool and gazebo. Luckily, Mr. Milsom's field is design, construction, and cabinetry. The couple also collect antiques; Barbadian, English, American and even Swedish pieces mingle harmoniously here. The result is a triumph, and not to be missed. Open House

FEBRUARY 19 OPEN HOUSE: WELCHES PLANTATION, ST. THOMAS With its handsome plantation house, sugar boiling house and sugar mill set in delightful gardens, Welches offers a wealth of attractions. The plantation was established in the mid 1600s though the present house probably dates from the hurricane of 1831. Located in the old sugar boiling house are the head offices of Best of Barbados Ltd.; a gift shop in the garden will highlight the company s unique range of gifts. Visitors can try their hand at screenprinting, though the highlight for many will be the main house, home of Jimmy Walker and his artist wife, Jill. The house is filled with her oil and watercolour paintings, produced over a period of nearly 50 years. To make the afternoon even more special, Jill will be on hand to sign, for a small contribution to Trust funds, her prints and her new autobiography, Jill Walker's Barbados. FEBRUARY 26 OPEN HOUSE: ILARO COURT, ST. MICHAEL Our thanks to Prime Minister, the Hon. Owen Arthur, for opening his official residence today. A tranquil oasis less than 2 miles from the heart of Bridgetown, Ilaro Court was designed and built 81 years ago by Lady Gilbert Carter, an accomplished American artist whose husband was governor of Barbados from 1904 to 1911. This gracious mansion successfully combines Edwardian, Italian, and Caribbean features into a distinctive and individualistic whole. It boasts the first swimming pool in Barbados and a park-like garden with gazebo, fishpond and orchid house. Open House
