How To: Dress Casual But Sophisticated

JeansWhen you’re on the go, running errands, traveling, dropping off the kids at school, etc., you can’t be stumbling around in pencil skirts and stilettos. But you also don’t want to look like you’ve just cleaned your bathroom.

Here are some tips for dressing casually but looking sophisticated at the same time.

  • Jeans – If you want to wear jeans, be sure they are fitted and suitable to your figure. They are just as easy to wear as baggy jeans.
  • Jeans alternative – There are plenty of alternatives to blue jeans that are casual. Try cargo pants or colored jeans.
  • Shoes – Wear cute, comfortable flats so your feet can do a lot of walking. Or try dressy sneakers. Sounds like an oxymoron, but there are dozens of funky sneakers that don’t look like you’re about to run a marathon or play tennis. Try Keds or Converse in vivid colors.
  • Tailored jackets – Three-quarter length coats in patterns dress up a casual look and are so easy to toss over a simple tee shirt and jeans. Try one that is nipped in at the waist so you maintain a shape under the outer layer.
  • Tee shirts – Fitted tees always look nicer than regular crew necks. Find a shape that suits your figure best and buy it in multiple colors. If you have a short neck, go for a vee neck tee. If you have big arms, cover them with 3/4-length sleeves. If you have small breasts, wear a pattern. If you have a bit of a belly, get some tees with ruching to disguise rolls.
  • Accessories – Dress up your casual pants with a belt. Rope on some beaded necklaces for color.
  • Hair – Keep your hair neat and pulled back for running errands. You don’t want you hair falling into your eyes when you are shopping. Wear it down but smooth and clean when you are meeting the girls for brunch.
  • Makeup – Keep makeup simple and quick. Never leave the house without mascara and a bit of lip gloss. Buy creamy products with built-in applicators to speed up the time it takes to apply.

It’s easy to be casual and still look fresh, clean, neat and pulled together.
