Our Fellowship Program

Robert B. Bourne, MD, Steven J. MacDonald, MD, Richard W. McCalden MD,
James McAuley, MD, Douglas Naudie, MD, and James Howard, MD, are pleased to offer a comprehensive adult reconstructive fellowship in London, Ontario, Canada. The fellowship includes diagnosis, evaluation, and management of degenerative, rheumatoid, and post-traumatic arthritis of the hip and knee, a high volume of
revision hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as the treatment of young adult hip disorders with re-surfacing, osteotomies, and arthroscopy (1300 surgeries per year).

The surgical schedule averages approximately 40 major procedures weekly. The emphasis of the fellowship is on revision hip and knee arthroplasty, which comprises of about 30 % of the clinical exposure. Fellows will be trained hands on in the management of significant bone defects, infected arthroplasty, as well as complex periprosthetic fractures.

The fellows are responsible for preparing and leading a weekly templating conference. It is expected the fellows undertake at least one major clinical research project during the year to be prepared for presentation at a national meeting and subsequent publication. The fellowship comprises a vast opportunity for orthopedic research including long term clinical outcome and database studies, initiation of randomized trials, use of advanced imaging modalities for wear measurements and component migration, biomechanical and retrieval studies, hip and knee simulator studies, as well as RSA (radiostereometric analysis).

This fellowship is open to all graduates of Canadian orthopaedic programs and any outside institutions which meet our criteria for training. Although the adult reconstruction fellowship is suitable for all orthopedic surgeons interested in hip and knee arthroplasty, there is a particular value for those who are interested in an academic career.
