History of Christmas Lights

Did you know: Christmas lights as we know them today didn’t become popular until the 1930s? However, the technology existed before then, when it was a bright idea thought up by Edward Hibberd Johnson in 1882.

The very first Christmas string light set was hand-wired with 80 red, white, and blue globes and powered by a generator. Johnson strung it around a tree and placed the tree on a revolving pedestal in his parlor window. It drew quite a crowd, including several reporters. It was such a success that Johnson set out to add more lights each year and it was recorded in 1884 that the tree was lit with 120 lights.

Although beautiful, the technology was unfortunately ahead of its time, and when Christmas light strings were offered to the public, they were simply too expensive for the average person. So, what did people use instead? Candles, believe it or not!

While festive, the open flame did create a fire hazard and people were looking for more. In 1894 the first light set made its way to the White House and they grew in popularity from there. By 1914, Christmas lights were affordable for all and were common by 1930. From large and expensive incandescent lights to the currently popular LED string lights, Christmas lights sure have come a long way.
