President Obama and the National Day of Prayer

I recently received the following in an e-mail, concerning President Obama and the National Day of Prayer. It is so full of distortions, half truths, and blatant lies that I decided to reprint it here, and give my response following. I know my response to the sender will not get forwarded around the Internet like the e-mail itself will; but at least anyone who reads this blog post will be made aware of it and can perhaps do his/her part to counteract such nonsense. Here’s the e-mail:

This is chilling…
=============================================
In

1952

President  Truman

established  one  day  a  year  as  a
“National Day of Prayer.”

—————————————————————————————————————————-

In

1988
President Reagan

designated the
First Thursday in May of each year as

the National Day of Prayer.

—————————————————————————————————————————

In June

2007
(then)

Presidential
Candidate Barack Obama

declared that the USA Was no longer  a
Christian nation.
—————————————————————

This year
President Obama

canceled the
21st annual National Day

of Prayer ceremony

at the White
House under the ruse
Of “not wanting to offend anyone”
————————————————————————
On September 25, 2009

from 4 am until 7  pm,

a National Day of Prayer

for the Muslim religion was Held on Capitol Hill,
Beside the White House.

There were over 50,000 Muslims that
Day  in  D.C.

HE PRAYS WITH THE MUSLIMS!

I guess it Doesn’t matter

if  “Christians”
Are  offended  by  this  event –
We  obviously
Don’t  count  as

“anyone”  Anymore.

The direction
this country is headed
should strike fear in the heart of every Christian,
especially knowing that the
Muslim religion believes that if Christians cannot be
converted, they should be annihilated.

This is not a Rumor ?

Go  to  the  website
To  confirm  this  info:
http://www.islamoncapitolhill.com/ )

Pay particular attention to the very bottom of the page:
“OUR TIME HAS COME”
I hope that this information will stir your spirit.
The words of 2 Chronicles 7:14
“If my people, Who are called by my Name,
Will humble themselves And pray,
And seek my face, and Turn from their Wicked ways,
Then will I hear from Heaven
And will forgive their Sin and will heal Their land.”

We must pray for Our nation, our communities,
Our families, and especially our children.
They are the ones who are going to suffer the most.
.
If  we  don’t  PRAY
May  God  have  Mercy.

IN GOD WE TRUST.

Please pass this on
Maybe someone, somehow can figure out a way to put America

back on the map as it was when we were growing up,

a safe place to live,  and by
The Ten Commandments and Pledge of Allegiance.

For Obama to continue as our president

is an INSULT TO OUR FOUNDING FATHERS

AND DISGUSTING TO EVERY RED-BLOODED AMERICAN.

Here’s the response I sent:

“As usual with such e-mail attacks against President Obama, this one was filled with, at best, half truths – and in some cases with outright lies. A half truth, masquerading as the whole truth, itself becomes wholly a lie. It’s a good idea to check out all of these “righteous anger” e-mails at Snopes.com before believing them or forwarding them on to others. In spreading these things, you’re just participating in the propagation of lies 😦 . You can read for yourself the real truth about those accusations at Snopes. I’ll summarize it for you in a moment. First, though, I went to the Islamic prayer website linked in that e-mail, and searched diligently for that phrase “our time has come” – and was completely unable to find it anywhere (bottom, top, or anywhere in between). So I guess that’s another lie – they just figured no one would actually go to the link to check it out, apparently.

[Correction: a reader – “iSherif” – pointed out that the phrase “our time has come” is in fact on the web page. It’s not at the bottom of the page as the e-mail says, but it is there – top left corner, in small letters underneath the phrases “Islam On…Capitol Hill” which is in LARGE letters. So this was not one of the lies in that e-mail. However, this is no different than any other religious or political group rejoicing when they see evidence that their political or religious philosophy is gaining ground, and joyfully proclaiming “our time has come!”. I’m pretty sure I have seen this same phrase on Libertarian sites and advertisements, and  heard the same sort of exclamation from Evangelical Christians. None of these mean they plan to tyrannically overthrow existing regimes or religions. – only that they see evidence that their viewpoint is ‘conquering’ the public through verbal and intellectual persuasion; and that is entirely legitimate. The Islamic website states clearly their peaceful and humble aims in this statement: “The objective of this gathering is to invite the Muslim Communities and friends of Islam to express and illustrate the wonderful diversity of Islam. We intend to manifest Islam’s majestic spiritual principals as revealed by Allah to our beloved prophet Muhammad (PEACE BE UPON HIM) of Arabia. Likewise; we intend to inspire a new generation of Muslim to work for the greater good of all people. We shall SERVE all people, regardless of race, religion or national origin.” There’s nothing malicious there, and nothing malicious implied in that “our time has come” statement.]

Now to summarize the facts, which can be found at the Snopes website. National Days of Prayer have been observed on various occasions throughout our nation’s history – though Thomas Jefferson and James Madison opposed any ‘official’ and Presidentially proclaimed Day of Prayer as being a violation of the 1st Amendment concerning the establishment of religion (I agree with them). Harry Truman was the first President to sign into law a Bill establishing an ‘official’ annual Day of Prayer. Ronald Reagan established the particular day on which the Day of Prayer would be annually observed. George W. Bush began the practice of having an ecumenical prayer service in the White House on that National Day of Prayer. All President Obama did was to go back to the practice of Presidents from Truman to Clinton of issuing a Presidential proclamation of a National Day of Prayer, without having a White House service. The Obama administration actually defended the Day of Prayer this year (in April) when a challenge to its Constitutionality was brought by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The federal court judge ruled in favor of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, declaring that a National Day of Prayer proclaimed by the Civil Government is unconstitutional (I agree with that decision). But the ruling doesn’t become effective until all appeals have been exhausted, so President Obama was not prevented from declaring the Day of Prayer in May of this year – which he did.

The Muslim Day of Prayer which was referred to in that e-mail was not a Government proclaimed Day of Prayer. It was planned, organized, and practiced by a Muslim organization, and was not held in the White House (as the services held under the Bush administration were). They got permits from the Capitol Hill Police, and everything was done legally, but without being an ‘official’ observance promoted by the Government of the USA. If Christian organizations wish to organize such an event, they can do it just as well as the Muslims can. That’s part of the freedom of religion which we hold dear in this country.

I don’t know whether or not President Obama participated in that Muslim Day of Prayer, but the picture in the e-mail was not taken at that event! 😯 That’s part of the repulsive lying nature of that propaganda. The picture was taken of President Obama removing his shoes before entering the Blue Mosque in Turkey when he visited that country. The Blue Mosque is the national mosque of Turkey, located in Istanbul. The removal of shoes is a requirement of everyone entering the mosque there. What a bunch of liars those propagandists are, using a picture of President Obama taking off his shoes at a mosque in Turkey to falsely make people think he was bowing in prayer with Muslims on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. (Not that it would be a bad thing, though. The President prays daily in private anyhow. Joining with any religious group in non-government-sponsored prayer would be his right, and in reality a good thing.) It also seems to be implied that the Muslim Day of Prayer was a Government organized event, as is the annual Day of Prayer – when it was in fact Muslim organized and in no way connected with the Government.

A reference was made to 2 Chronicles 7:14, concerning God’s people humbling themselves and seeking His face in prayer. That is precisely what the Muslims were doing on their Day of Prayer! They themselves were practicing that exhortation, so Christians ought to be supporting them, not opposing them.

The statement that the Muslim religion believes that if Christians won’t convert they should be annihilated is an outright lie! There are no doubt some extremist radicals – who give Islam a black eye – who do teach that; but if they do believe that, they are in complete opposition to their Qur’an, which unequivocally states in 2:256 that there is no compulsion in religion. 🙂  Unbelievers will be judged by God, but humans are never commanded to be the agents of God’s judgment, nor does the Qur’an ever condone humans in acting as His agents to ‘judge’ unbelievers. I urge you to read my blog article, “Does Islam Proclaim That All Infidels Should Be Killed?” to see that those verses which are usually quoted to prove this ridiculous assertion actually only give the Muslims the right of self defense when they are first attacked by ‘infidels’. Not once do they exhort Muslims to aggressively attack and kill anyone just because they don’t accept Islam. They certainly don’t command or condone killing innocents – whether man, woman, or child. “Muslim” terrorists are acting in direct defiance of their own ‘holy book’, and are wolves in sheep’s clothing. (There are also “Christians” who wish to see our nation practicing Old Testament laws about killing ‘blasphemers’ – that is, people of other religions – adulterers, Sabbath breakers, and disobedient children. Does that mean that the Christian religion teaches that?)

Obama did say that the US is no longer a Christian nation; but his very next phrase was “at least not JUST”. He went on to say that America is also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of unbelievers. That is, all of these religions, and complete nonbelievers also, go to make up this nation (although people like the propagandists who sent that e-mail want to just pick out 2 phrases: “no longer a Christian nation”, and “is a Muslim nation”). That is what the 1st amendment of the Constitution is all about – as well as Article VI Section 3 which says: “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States”. In fact, in 1797 (just 10 years after the Constitution was ratified) the US Congress unanimously approved a treaty with the Muslim nation of Tripoli of Barbary, which said this in Article 11: “As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion–as it has itself no character of enmity against the law, religion or tranquility of Musselmen [Muslims]…” That treaty began to be drawn up in 1796 under the administration of George Washington, and was completed and ratified in 1797 under the administration of John Adams. I would think those men knew whether or not they had established a “Christian nation” when they ratified our Constitution – and they said emphatically that they did not. So if Obama was wrong about anything in his statement, it was only in saying America is no longer a Christian nation. It was always a pluralistic nation, with a majority of people professing Christianity in some form or another as their religion. But it would still be the same pluralistic nation of religious liberty if the majority of the population was Buddhist, Jewish, or Muslim.

What is really disgusting is that the people who are behind that lying e-mail call themselves “Christians”, which should mean that they condemn lying. Instead they actually participate in hatred and lies; they’re giving Christianity a black eye. You may be sure that I’ll have no part in forwarding that e-mail.”

I guess that last sentence now needs to be qualified, since I am in fact ‘forwarding’ it by means of this blog. But since I also include a rebuttal, the ‘spirit’ of the sentence remains the same.

  1. Obama a Muslim, that’s just hilarious. I wish he was!

    • Oh how I agree with you, ‘Housemom’! 😀 The very suggestion that President Obama is a Muslim (practicing ‘taqiyya’ of course) deserves both of these icons: 🙄 and 😆 .

  2. Excellent.. 🙂

  3. Mr. Parker, I just noticed the website does have the phrase “Our time has come” (See top left)

But I suppose the folks who initiated the email are reading too much into it???

    • Thanks, iSherif, for pointing out my error. You show yourself to be a true friend as much by your pointing out mistakes as by complimentary remarks. I’ll make a corrective comment right away.

It’s strange how the eye can miss something. I read over that web page multiple times deliberately looking for the phrase “Our time has come”. I wanted to be sure about it before I published the article. Yet I still missed the phrase. True, it wasn’t where the e-mail said it would be, but it was present. You’re right, though, that it certainly doesn’t carry the militant conception of violent conquest the author of the e-mail obviously intends to imply. I’ll comment about that in my correction, also.

  4. Yes, an excellent response Mr. Parker!

I’m back at your site after quite some time, so lots of reading to do now… 🙂
