Mies Society welcomes Steven Weiss as new board chair

image

The Mies Society is pleased to welcome Steven Weiss (ARCH ‘73) as its new board chair. Steve has been an active board member since 2012. As an alumni of the College of Architecture who studied in Crown Hall, he has an intimate familiarity with Mies van der Rohe’s work and design principals. Under Steve’s leadership, the Mies Society has refined its mission and will continue to revive its programmatic activities, launch a new and improved website, and reinstitute its tour program.

Steve is the principal of Weiss Architects, where he serves as principal designer of all projects and provides oversight management for all endeavors. Steve’s designs incorporate functional pragmatism with a particular emphasis on structure and materiality. Weiss Architects is a generalist practice with significant experience in residential, retail, hospitality and sports/recreation architecture. Prior to establishing Weiss Architects, Steve was a Principal of Solomon Cordwell Buenz and a Senior Associate at Booth/Hansen Architects.

Steve was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1995 and has received many awards for both his architectural design work and for his service to the profession of architecture. In addition to his design practice, Steve speaks regularly around the country on the practice of architecture and the workings of the construction industry.

The Mies van der Rohe Society is proud to take part in IIT’s Giving Day, a 24-hour, university-wide event focused on celebrating and strengthening the IIT community. As a membership organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Mies van der Rohe, the Society plays an important role on IIT’s Mies campus.

When you become a member on November 17th, you become part of this day-long celebration while making a long-term impact. Your membership supports exhilarating programs, such as tours, lectures, and performances, which preserve the legacy of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and reinforce Chicago’s international reputation for architectural distinction.

This fall, we partnered with the Chicago Architecture Biennial to present artist Santiago Borja’s site-specific installation and performance, Theatre, at Carr Chapel. With the university’s College of Architecture, we welcomed Dutch architect Mels Crouwel for a lecture on his impressive contributions to the built environment in the Netherlands, and we opened our doors to over 550 people for the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s fifth-annual Open House Chicago.

As we look to the year ahead and continue to expand our calendar of programs, your support of the Mies Society is increasingly crucial and will allow us to continue to develop meaningful programs and learning opportunities.

Mies fans, architecture enthusiasts, and all those committed to helping the Mies Society offer events like those described above are encouraged to participate in Giving Day by renewing or joining the Mies Society and promoting this university-wide effort on social media.
