pugsley

I felt like I really needed to post something on 1.11.11. So, speaking of ones, this is the last one:

This is the last Pugsley we have until March. It’s an 18″ and after this, we’re out.

We’ll typically pick up some framesets when supply gets ugly, but even those are out. It’s pretty amazing.

But take heart! Now you can get tires for your fatbike that will imprint spiders in the snow:

IF you have a fatbike, that is…

These beauties were custom made by A. Sondgeroth.

They were once a pair of Planet Bike 29″ Cascadia fenders. Now they’re just plain awesome. He ripped the fenders down the middle (with his bare hands), widened them with some clear plexi-glass, and bolted everything together with stainless button-head screws. The finished product is super solid.

Very well done, I’d say.

Our STAY MOVING Clinic was a good time.

We had a great turn out. It was a good mix of people looking to extend their riding season, get into snowshoes, or just happy to be in a room full of like-minded lunatics.

We’ve got our photos up on Flickr here.

Thanks to James from Louis Garneau and many thanks to all the nice folks who came and hung out with us.

Surly blurted out more new info last week about their 2011 products and showed us the hot new look for the Pugsley:

The "Snowblind" Pugsley

We’re taking pre-orders on the new Pugsley now. Pre-orders? Yes, pre-orders, on a Surly – we learned our lesson with the Mukluk.

As you all know, the Salsa Mukluk was also released a few weeks ago and no one could have predicted how fast or how fiercely they would have sold out. We pre-ordered 4 and 2 are already sold. (We have a Large and XL avail for purchase)(in October). Salsa has reported that the entire first batch is claimed (the rumor is that for every bike they have arriving in October, they could have sold 3) and that in order to get a Mukluk, you have to wait until February.

The Pugsley is also due in October and is also coming in limited numbers. They are $1550 and we’ll get one reserved for you with $500 deposit. The deadline for pre-orders will be Sept 22nd.

If you have fitting questions, please give us a call or stop in. We have a few here in a couple sizes that you can try.

Call 815.758.2403 and we’ll get you going.

Transmogrify: To change into a different shape or to transform, often with bizarre or humorous effect.

We got first glimpse of some new goodies from Surly as pictures from Eurobike have landed on midwestern shores.
We’re excited. Surly’s been mum about details, but anyone with the ability to squint can see there’s been some changes.
First up – THE TROLL

The Surly Troll - Geared 26er with a doosy of a dropout.

That tail hanging off the back of the Troll is new Surly-born product as well. The brave engineerds up there continue to drive innovation into a dark corner with this new addition: a burly cargo trailer previously unavailable outside of custom utility circles. The hitch system looks unlike anything on the market and undoubtedly manages the burden brilliantly.

Custom cargo capability at mass-consumer pricing!

The new Steamroller has been done up nice, separating itself from the legions of skinny-tire ss/fg steel bikes on the market today. Surly Open Bars, wider tires, brakes, new color.
And behind it, you’ll see what might be the most beautiful Surly color to date. The new Crosscheck will be that perfect blue back there.

Surly Steamroller and Crosscheck coming up.

These pictures and more can be found at Singletrack World – we thank them profusely for their espionage. Click the link to see the new Pugsley, the new Rolling Darryl rim, and some new top tubes…

It’s our pleasure and honor to announce a special event taking place next Wednesday here at North Central Cyclery. Salsa Cycles will be here to show off a handful of their new and never-before-seen bikes and components for the upcoming 2011 model year. The event will feature  product giveaways from Salsa and NCC, Test Rides (after a precursory background check and DNA sampling), Campfire,  Weenie Roast, S’mores, and, of course, beervezas.

The showstopping addition to the Salsa lineup is the new Mukluk.

The Mukluk is Salsa’s new snowbike and you’ll be able to see it live and in person. (Well, you’ll be in person. It will be in bicycle). We’ve already been told the Mukluk is going to be a tough bike to get a hold of, so we’ll be taking pre-orders at the event.

Another pair of beauties that are hard to obtain that will be present at the event are the Ti Mariachi and Ti La Cruz models – complete and ready for test rides.

The Ti Mariachi made a cameo here last winter. Our first Ti Salsa, the Ti La Cruz, finally arrived last week after being on order for months! The Ti family from Salsa will be growing this year, but you’ll have to stay tuned for more info on those new arrivals as they come.

Also making an appearance will be the new steel Mariachi.

Other new and never-before-seen stuff will be present at NCC. You’ll have to come and see it yourself. I truly am not at liberty to say what it will be.

Salsa will also have some prototypes of their new line of racks and “gear cages” to show off, too. These are impressive.

The festivities begin at 7pm on Wednesday night. Please feel free to send an rsvp to rideaway@northcentralcyclery.com so we can buy enough weenies, vege-weenies, and s’morestuffs.

Another Frostbike, come and gone.

We’ve made the journey five times now and we’re never disappointed. This year we enjoyed a nice mix of product, people, and savvy. Bike conferences are only as much as you make them. You can go and drool over the goods, glad hand the vendors, awkwardly pilfer energy bars and stickers (c’mon, we’re grown men), and come away feeling like you wasted a weekend. We tend to use those expos as times to put faces to names and spend time with people that can teach us something we don’t know. I learn more from fellow dealers than I do from the seminars (and some of the seminars are great – see also Brett Fleming).

We spent some good time with our Colorado Contingent. iScott from Salvagetti’s and Jason from Pedal Pushers made my trip a great success, personally and professionally. It it weren’t for them, we would never have been able to figure out how to get from point A to point B and discover our B-A levels; that is unless, we just asked someone else or looked at a map or just stopped drinking. Regardless, they have fancy fones and that makes people like them. I kept trying to act like I was cool, too. People just looked at me with disdain and told me to get my camera out of my ear and stop caressing my mp3 player. moving on…

Eric tries to limber up after a long night on the pond

As always it was good to see the Surly fellows. We saw more of them than ever, really. We met all sorts of them. The “Trevor Treatment” was especially nice on Saturday night. He tore us away from our ninja stars to show us dark places with no people in them. It was really quite incredible. We learned the stupifying truth behind Salsa Flip-Offs and we’ll never buy anything else ever again. They’re assembled right here in the USA by whoever gets caught not working.

Salsa Skewers are nuts.

Salsa skewers are nuts

I really failed to take pictures this year. Mostly because of my ongoing coux with the iphone I don’t own. Even though I don’t have visual proof, we met with some other great people and saw some other great stuff.

Salsa Cycles is off and rolling with their new identity: Adventure by Bike. We’re excited to be partners with them. Their direction if quite congruent with ours. Their new racks are smart and have a solid place in the market. Expect more in the store.

Bravo to Continental, Chub hubs, Cane Creek, and Pacific Outdoor Equipement. New Time Iclic and AllRoad pedals will be available at NCC this year, too, along with eyewear from Optice Nerve, new Cateye computers, and new products from Portland Design Works.

We were impressed with all of these guys – they had the right people in their booths with good product knowledge and effective people skills. We were surprised by some other booths with great brand recognition totally fail at those aforementioned qualities, but we won’t name names (we will, however, name nick:names: Bullsnake).

Thank you, QBP, for a good time and a bunch of free goods. You’ve bought our love and patronage for another year.

It’s all in one piece. It rides noticeably better than our shop Pugsley. We believe the Larry’s are responible for that. It may be a geometrical difference. We’re probably just saying that to sound smart; we’re not even sure there was any change in the geometry with the new frames. We could probably look into that, but we’re too busy looking at the Pugsley. It’s here until Thursday, so come take a look.

more pics here.
