    Hi Neal,
I currently work as an IT contractor in the UK. I can see that its already becoming a more competitive industry, with every possibility that it may all go abroad one day. What advice would you give someone like me? Do you see upsides for UK developers willing to retrain? move? etc. or is it all gloom and doom for us? Very keen to hear your thoughts. Thanks

      Hi Mark

As I see it, the challenge for UK based developers will be to stay constantly ahead of the curve in terms of skills. The industry is changing rapidly but most things that go overseas are the commoditised skills. Take the example of iPhone developers at the moment. Good people seem to be commanding upto £350 per day if they’re contracting or £50k per year as a full time role and there’s no shortage of work. Such opportunities will continue to present themselves and a culture of lifelong learning needs to be adopted to take advantage of them.

Thanks for replying Neal. Yes that makes sense to me. I guess that’s not unlike many other industries in the UK now, where much of the R&D and specialist work is still done here, whether Automotive, Textile, Electronic/Product Design etc, while the mass production is done overseas. I imagine apprenticeships becoming more important as entry level jobs are going to be more demanding. So yes the challenge is to stay ahead and keep learning.

    Dear Mr Gandhi

I heard your participation on the Bottom Line yesterday – it was very interesting to hear your views. In particular I was interested in your opinions regarding development in Asia and China. I am a British guy based in Shanghai and hope that I can help you over here sometime in the future – yours seems to be a sound business model if you can get it right here!
    Cheers
    Alex

    Hello Neal,

Your discussion on the Bottom Line made for very good listening whilst training in the gym. Thanks.

Living in Shanghai, I’m looking at supporting companies enter China and have a proposal that may be of interest. Have you considered offering your clients infrastructure, such as office space, hot desks and display areas, creating a new-entrant centre of excellence? There are successful examples to build upon. ‘China Integrated’ supported the development of the SwissCentre which acts as a physical hub for Swiss companies entering China. The companies get the infrastructure they need and the office provider is in prime position to deliver the ancillary start-up services. I have other examples that may be of value if you would like to explore expanding your service offering.

Good luck with this venture and good luck with the entrepreneur awards.

    Andy
