Seminar on Project Portfolio Management, Governance and the Role of PMOs in Building Effective Project Organizations

The awareness that good governance links with good project results grows among corporations and investors. It is one of the “hot topics” at all project management conferences and in recent publications. Special project governance conferences are now held to address the subject even better. While the project governance functions in an organization are increasingly well understood, the question arises how the different governance institutions (e.g. Steering Committee, Sponsor, PMO, portfolio management, program management, middle managers and board of directors) work together for effective and efficient project governance.

The seminar on Project Portfolio Management, Governance and the Role of PMOs in Building Effective Project Organizations provides insight into practical and relevant organizational approaches, tools and techniques. It is based on current research results and builds on many years of experience in implementing project management governance structures in organizations. It provides the base for cost-effective and timely achievement of organizational goals.

The 2-day seminar is held by Dr Ralf Müller and Dr Jerzy Stawicki on May 19 and 20, 2011 in Malmö, Sweden. It addresses the roles and responsibilities of portfolio management, project governance, the PMO and the interaction and collaboration among them. Seminar on Emotionally Competent Project Leadership

A recent article in one of the major German newspapers showed that about a quarter of all employees think about resigning from their job because of relationship issues with their supervisors. And about half of those who actually resign do this for the same reason. This shows the importance of and the need for “emotionally competent” interaction of supervisors (such as project managers) with the people they lead.

The seminar on emotionally competent leadership addresses this through the emotional (EQ), intellectual (IQ) and managerial (MQ) competences needed for appropriate leadership in projects. It starts with an introduction into the history of leadership theories over the last 100 years. Then the most recent school of leadership, the competency school of leadership, is discussed before the psychological leadership profiles of successful project managers in different types of projects are presented. Participants will have the opportunity to test their own emotional intelligence and to develop their own competency development plan for their particular project types.

The seminar is held by Prof Rodney Turner and Dr Ralf Müller and builds on their joint research studies and publications in the area of leadership. Participants will get a free copy of their new book “Project Oriented Leadership”.

Effective management of project based organizations requires a fine tuned integration of project, program and portfolio management. Each of these three management perspectives is dependent on the other two to function effectively. That demands a holistic view to managing project based organizations. The objectives of each of the three management perspectives must be reflected within the tasks of each of the other perspectives.

Developing well balanced portfolio, program and project management systems within a firm requires an understanding of each perspective and a shared communication system for the managers. That includes an answer to the question "How much project management is enough?"

PM Concepts AB provides consulting services in the conceptualization, development, deployment and operations of an integrated project management approach for your firm, such as an integrated approach to:

  • Project Management Offices, which support the development and improvement of project management services in a firm
  • Project management methodologies, which define the process and tools in managing projects. Which methodology fits your needs?
  • Training and certification for project and program managers, which takes into account the specific needs of a firm's projects. Each firm has different requirements for project management, depending on their industry, geography, culture etc. We show you the Return on Investment (RoI) in your project management training.
  • Training and preparation of Project Sponsors and Project Steering Committee members for their specific role and task within the wider context of projects.
  • Fit of the firm's specific project needs and its project managers skills
  • Project Management Maturity Model, the overall approach to project management within a firm. Is it needed? If so, which maturity model fits your firm?
  • Program management planning and scheduling, which identifies the synergies among objectives of individual projects to improve the overall effectiveness of the sum of a coherent group of projects
  • Portfolio communication and management systems, which optimize resource utilization among projects and programs. That includes visibility of project and program status, as well as resource prioritization at all levels of management.

Only a well balanced approach to the above listed functions allows reaping the benefits of management by projects. Contact us to discuss your specific needs for project management.

PM Concepts AB provides consulting in tactical project management. That includes working with your project managers to optimize the use of resources, processes and tools for the benefit of your projects and programs. These consulting services are provided for your individual projects, so that the work immediately contributes to your firm's results. For ease of knowledge and skills transfer to your project managers these consulting services are offered as a joint work with your (soon to be) project manager on your project. Consulting offerings are:

  • Mentoring programs, to bring your new project managers up-to-speed and introduce them to the project management techniques appropriate to your firm.
  • Project startup, one of the most critical points in project implementation. All resources, tools, processes and procedures need to be in place for the project to be executed as planned. We show you how to successfully start your projects.
  • Project reviews, to identify areas for project improvement without searching for the guilty. Here projects are assessed and recommendations for improvements are made.
  • Project audits for troubled projects. These are in-depth assessments of projects that turned bad. A comprehensive list of improvements both for the project as for the organizations involved in the project is provided.
  • Project recovery, to implement the recommendations from reviews and audits. This includes consulting for turning around troubled projects, or at least minimizing the losses.

A well constructed mentor program and good project start-up are critical for project success. If, however, a project has already turned bad, then we help you in recovering it.
