Police Record: Tuesday, March 2

  • Emory Police Department received a report of stalking involving an 18-year-old female student and resident of Hopkins Hall. The student stated that between Sept. 30 and Feb. 12, a male subject with whom she had a prior relationship  has been sending her text messages and attempting to contact her. The student told officers that their relationship ended six months ago. The subject involved in the incident was last seen on Emory’s campus on Nov. 19. The Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident and the information has been turned over to an investigator.
  • A 22-year-old female student has reportedly been receiving harassing text messages from an unknown number. The student reported that the text messages were in reference to a test she had administered on Feb. 19 and Feb. 22. The information has been turned over to an investigator.
  • A theft occurred from the second floor of the pediatric clinic on Feb. 22 at approximately 2:20 p.m. A female staff member at the location reported that she left her wallet and purse inside her desk drawer in her office at the location and later discovered that someone had removed her wallet from her purse. Her wallet contained a $50 bill and her driver’s license , and the wallet itself is valued at $25.
  • EPD received a third party report on Feb. 22 at 3:45 p.m. The caller stated that a male student broke into her female friend’s dorm room and assaulted her. The assault occurred sometime between Aug. 1 and Dec. 1, but there is no further information available at this time.
  • An argument occurred between two Emory students, a 19-year-old female student and a 19-year-old male student, on Feb. 23 at 1:15 p.m. The argument became loud enough to disrupt neighbors in the residence hall. EPD officers responded to the location and made contact with the two individuals. The officer took statements from each student and the Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.
  • EPD officers made contact with a 48-year-old male subject in the Woodruff Memorial Building lobby on Feb. 23 on 5:20 p.m. The subject appeared to be having a conversation with himself and smelled faintly of alcohol. The subject told officers that he was trying to catch the shuttle. Officers made contact with the subject’s brother, who said he would meet him at the Decatur train station. Emory Emergency Medical Services arrived and checked the subject to determine whether he needed any medical help. Officers then waited with the subject until his brother arrived.

Tuesday, October 20

  • Emory Police Department received a report of an act of intolerance that occurred at New Turman on Oct. 3 at 1:30 a.m. The area director at the location stated that someone had written an offensive statement about another student’s sexual orientation on a poster in the third floor hallway.
  • Someone stole a bicycle from outside of the Woodruff Residential Center. The owner stated that they left their bicycle on Oct. 5 at 12:01 a.m. and returned on Oct. 6 and discovered the bicycle was missing. The bicycle is valued at approximately $500.
  • EPD responded to Old Turman Residential Center on Oct. 12 after a Nored security officer reportedly saw three male subjects walking across Starvine bridge. EPD officers responded to the location and asked three subjects, two 18-year-old males and one 17-year-old male, if they had been skateboarding in the area. The subjects told EPD that they had been skateboarding in the area. Officers then asked the subjects for identification and one subject, 17, told officers his identification was in his vehicle. Officers and the subjects went to the vehicle to obtain the subject’s driver’s license and noticed a pipe in the vehicle. The officers obtained consent from the subjects to search the vehicle and found less than one ounce of marijuana and a metal herb grinder. When the officers asked the subjects if they had anything else in their car, one of the 18-year-old male subjects stated, “I don’t know. To be honest I smoke every day.” The subjects were issued a citation for possessing less than one ounce of marijuana.
  • A University staff member in the Environmental Health and Safety Office reported that they received harassing phone calls on Oct. 12 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The victim stated that the caller sounded male and had a distorted voice. The calls also occurred in March and May of this year from the same telephone number.
  • EPD received a report from the second floor of the Emory University Hospital on Oct. 12 at 10:30 a.m. A female caller, 29, stated that she left her wallet and purse at the location and that someone stole her wallet and its contents. The wallet is valued at $250 and its contents included $435 in currency and some credit cards. The information has been turned over to a detective.

Friday, April 24

  • The Emory Police Department (EPD) received a report from an employee on April 8 at 6:26 p.m. who stated that she received a telephone call from a former employee who had been previously terminated. The terminated employee reportedly blamed her termination on the other employee. The call was made to the employee’s home, and the case has been turned over to the DeKalb County Police Department.
  • Someone broke into a 19-year-old female resident’s room in Turman Residential Center on April 9 sometime between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. while she was in class. The unknown subject removed a green Sony Vaio laptop valued at $1,000. The case has been turned over to a detective.
  • Pieces of a Fuji 4.0 bicycle were stolen from the bicycle rack outside New Turman Residence Hall sometime between April 10 at 5 p.m. and April 12 at 9:10 p.m. The Emory student who owns the bicycle stated that the front rim and wheel of the bicycle were stolen and are valued at $150.
  • EPD received a report of suspicious activity at Woodruff Library on April 11 that occurred between 7:25 and 8:06 a.m. According to the report, a male subject in his 40s with a slight beard and wearing all black attire may have been following patrons to the library form Fishburne Parking Deck. EPD met with a female employee at the location, who stated that the subject had followed her to the library. Officers made contact with the subject, who told officers he had not been following patrons or the female employee, but that he was lost and did not know where to go. Officers conducted a further field interview and allowed the subject to leave the area.
  • On April 12 between 1:54 and 2:44 a.m., EPD officers responded to Turman North Residence Hall. An 18-year-old female had been dropped off at her dorm after attending a party at Sigma Nu fraternity. The female subject was taken to Emory University Hospital for treatment and the Division of Campus Life was notified.

Friday, April 17

  • A female student reported that she lost her ring in the Dental School Building on March 27 sometime after 11 a.m. She stated that she took off the ring because her hand began to swell and accidentally left the ring at the location. The ring is white gold with a diamond and engraved curved pattern and is valued at $600. Her wedding date is engraved inside the ring as well.
  • Emory Police Department received a noise complaint that loud music was coming from the front porch of 14 Eagle Row on April 3 at 11:45 p.m. EPD officers spoke with residents at the location and they turned the music down.
  • EPD received a noise complaint on April 4 at 2:10 a.m. in reference to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event going on at the Woodruff P.E. Center, EPD contacted the student coordinator at the location and they turned off the loud music.
  • An Emory University Hospital employee contacted EPD on April 4 to report that she has been receiving phone calls from her 36-year-old estranged husband since Dec. 29. The employee further stated that recent phone calls have led her to become concerned for her safety. The victim’s husband reportedly told her that he would continue calling her to have her dismissed from her job. The incident is under active investigation at this time.
  • EPD received a noise complaint on April 5 at 1:03 a.m. that houses on Eagle Row were in violation of the city noise ordinance. EPD officers responded to a party going on at 18 Eagle Row and asked subjects at the location to turn down the music. The subjects complied at that time. Another officers responded to 14 Eagle Row and asked them to turnd down their music as well and the subjects complied.
  • On April 5 at 2:34 a.m., an EPD officer at the Dooley’s Depot parking lot identified two female students carrying open cans of beer. One of the female students needed medical attention and Emory Emergency Medical Services was contacted. Residence Life personnel was contacted and arrived at the location. They escorted the female student to her residence hall for her own safety.
  • EPD officers responded to the courtyard between Complex and Harris Hall on April 6 at 12:30 a.m. and found people smoking. Officers could not detect the odor of marijuana but met with the students at the location. Two females, 18 and 19, and two males, 18 and 19, were allowed to leave the location.

Friday, March 6

  • The Emory Police Department received a report from a 31-year-old female graduate student and employee of Yerkes Primate Center on Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. The student stated that she had been receiving harassing phone calls for the past few weeks from a known caller. Her information was turned over to a detective and she is trying to obtain a protective order at this time.
  • EPD received a report of a hit-and-run on Feb. 24 at 11:25 a.m. from the Peavine Parking Deck. A security officer at the location witnessed a Pontiac Bonneville strike another vehcile and then leave the scene. EPD located the vehicle in the parking deck shortly after and proceeded the suspected vehcile for evidence.
  • A 21-year-old male student reported that someone stole his iPod from White Hall 212 on Feb. 24 sometime between 12:15 and 2:30 p.m. The student stated that he left his iPod on a desk in the room and when he returned to retrieve it, the iPod was gone. There are no suspects at this time.
  • Someone stole a 24-speed Yukon Giant bicycle from outside of Alabama Hall sometime on Feb. 25. An Emory student reported that the lock, helmet and pedal clips were also stolen as well. The total value of all of hte stolen items is $400.
  • EPD received a report from a 47-year-old visitor to the Emory Clinic that someone stole the GPS unit from the glove compartment of their car on Feb. 25 sometime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The vehicle had been parked by valet serices at the Winship Cancer Center. The GPS is valued at $200.
  • A staff member at the Emory University Hospital reported a theft that occurred on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. The staff member sated that he left his wallet at the parking office and realized that his wallet was missing later that afternoon. The wallet was missing when he returned to the location, but someone used his debit card at a Citgo gas station for $110 shortly after. The wallet also contained the staff member’s credit cards and driver’s license.
  • EPD received a report of entering auto from Wesley Woods on Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. A 37-year-old white male subject driving an Emory van parked in the loading dock at the location and went inside a nearby building. He returned less than ten minutes later and found that two locks in the rear of the vehicle had been broken and equipment in the back had been stolen. Someone stole two $500 backpack blowers, one $350 hedger, two $350 weeders, one $500 large hedge clippers and one $350 small hedgle clippers.

Friday, February 20

  • A 21-year-old white male student reported that someone stole his wallet from his gym bag at the Woodruff P.E. Center on Jan. 31. The victim further stated that he left his bag at 5 p.m. to play basketball and that when he returned at 5:45 p.m. to retrieve his bag, his wallet was missing. His wallet contained two $25 gift cards, a driver’s license and his Emory card.
  • A 29-year-old staff member reported receiving harassing phone calls on Feb. 10 between 1:45 and 3:15 a.m. The victim said the calls came from a known black male subject, 24. Officers responded to the location and attempted to contact the subject unsuccessfully. The harassing phone calls did not continue after that.
  • Emory Police Department received a report of simply assault on Feb. 11 at 9:18 p.m. that occurred at the Dobbs University Center. The complainant, a 28-year-old black male, stated that he had been assaulted by another coworker, a 24-year-old white male, at the location. The individual who assaulted the victim knocked his hat off and struck him on the forehead. The victem then grabbed his coworker by the jacket to stop him and managed to free himself, at which point he notified EPD. The victim told police that he did not want to press charges and his coworker later admitted to striking him.
  • EPD received a report of suspicious behavior that occurred on Feb. 12 between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. The complainant, a female Emory student, told police that she parked her car in Peavine Parking Deck and observed an individual looking into vehicles at the location. She described him as wearing a dark outfit with a shirt that said “Security” on the back. She told police that she became frightened when the individual followed her from Peavine Parking Deck towards the sorority lodges. The information has been turned over to the Division of Campus Life and the Nored Security Supervisor, and the case is currently under investigation.
  • EPD officers resonded to Dobbs Hall on Feb. 13 at 12:05 a.m. to assist a Resident Adivser who had confiscated less than one ounce of marijuana from residents at the location. The marijuana was found in a room on the second floor, in which there were seven Emory students, including four white male students, two Asian female students and one white female student.
  • EPD dispatched officers to 4 Eagle Row on Feb. 13 at 12:32 a.m. after a student at the location reported that they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from another room. Officers obtained entry into the room in question and confiscated less than one ounce of marijuana, a small silver grinder, a box of rolling papers and a cylinder-shaped device used to smoke marijuana. EPD officers cited the student, 18, for possession of the drugs and his court date is scheduled for March 19 at 2 p.m.
  • EPD officers assited DeKalb County Police Department on Feb. 13 at 4:05 a.m. Officers responded to a personal residence on North Decatur Road after the resident reported a burglary in process. When officers arrived, the owner of the residence had the burglar at gunpoint on the kitchen floor. The subject was taken into custody by the DeKalb County Police Department officers.

Tuesday, November 4

  • A 17-year-old female student told the Emory Police Department that her black iPod and Motorola cell phone and her roommate’s black laptop and charger were stolen from her room in McTyiere Hall on Oct. 26 sometime between 2:35 and 4:25 a.m. The victim had left her room unlocked and unattended during that period of time. When a delivery man called her cell phone to tell her that he had arrived with the Chinese food she had ordered earlier, a male answered her phone. Three male subjects were seen in the area during the time of the incident. One of them made contact with a resident of the first floor to ask her how to get out of the building. The case is under investigation.
  • A Giant bronze bicycle and a black Masterlock bicycle cable were stolen from the bicycle rack outside of the Dental School Building sometime between Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. and Oct. 30 at 9:30 a.m. The bicycle is valued at $600, and lock cable at $12.
  • EPD officers reported to the Turman Residential Center on Oct. 30 at 7:59 a.m. after a fight was reported. The two engaged in the fight were students at Druid Hills High School. One student said he was hit twice in the face and punched in the jaw by someone he did not know. EPD officers contacted Druid Hills officials and turned the two over.
  • EPD officers responded to a fire alarm at 8 Eagle Row on Oct. 30 at 10:37 p.m. Someone had set off the fire alarm from a pull station on the third floor. While officers were checking the third floor for signs of fire, they detected an overwhelming odor of marijuana. Officers could not locate the residents or the source of the smell near the area at that time.
  • A 28-year-old student called EPD on Oct. 31 to report that she had been receiving harassing phone calls since Sept. 30. She reported that someone has been calling her cell phone and hanging up repeatedly. She has asked for the calls to stop on several occasions, but the calls continue to be made from a blocked number. The information has been turned over to an investigator.

Tuesday, September 16

  • A theft occurred from the first floor of White Hall on Sept. 2 between 8 and 10:15 a.m. The victim, a 19-year-old Emory student, left his backpack outside of a classroom while he attended a meeting. When he returned, his backpack was missing, including $25 cash, a white Apple iPhone and his credit cards.
  • The Emory Police Department received a report from a 52-year-old staff member on Sept. 5 at 8 a.m. in regards to harassing phone calls made to the individual. The staff member told police that the caller sounded intoxicated and had slurred speech. The staff member stated that she did not know anyone who could be making the calls. The case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • A resident adviser on the third floor of Trimble Hall discovered the word “vandalism” written on the metal part of his door frame, as well as similar markings written in permanent marker throughout the hallway, which occurred sometime on Sept. 6. Facilities Management and the Division of Campus Life were notified, but the RA said that he took the situation as a practical joke and was not offended, nor did he want to press charges.
  • A theft occurred from the fourth floor of the G-Wing in the Emory University Hospital on Sept. 7 between 1 and 9:30 a.m. The victim had been sleeping in the hospital’s waiting room during the time of the theft and awoke to find that her wallet, including her credit cards, had been stolen. Charges were made to the credit cards although the amount and location of the purchases are unknown at this time. The case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • EPD officers arrested a 40-year-old medical student for disorderly conduct on Sept. 8 at 12:19 a.m. The student was waiting on Means Drive for the shuttle to come. A shuttle driver approached and told the individual that shuttles had stopped running for the evening. The student told the driver that the shuttles were supposed to run until 12:30 a.m. and insisted that someone take him to Toco Hills. An officer arrived at the location and arrested the individual after he failed to comply and refused to identify himself properly. The individual was transported to DeKalb County Jail. His court date is set for Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.

Friday, February 29

  • A 27-year-old student called Emory Police Department after receiving harassing phone calls from an individual she had met on a bus and had exchanged numbers with. The first phone call occurred around Jan. 25, and the latest occurred on Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. The caller called multiple times a day even after the complainant asked him to stop. There were no threats made, but the case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • A theft occurred at the Emory University Hospital sometime between Feb. 16 and Feb. 19. A 62-year-old female patient in the Intensive Care Unit removed her 1.5 carat, square diamond ring set after her finger became swollen. A nurse placed the ring in a biohazard bag and placed the bag in a closet. When the nurse returned a few days later, the bag and the ring were gone. The ring is valued at $9,000 and is not insured.
  • On Feb. 18 a 30-year-old female staff member reported that between 3:47 and 4:24 p.m., persons unknown broke the rear driver’s side window of her 2004 Hyundai parked on the third level of the Michael Street Parking Deck. Nothing was disturbed or missing from inside the vehicle.
  • A 20-year-old female student reported that persons unknown stole her bike sometime between Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. and Feb. 19 at 8:15 a.m. Her bike was parked in front of Turman East, but when she returned the bike was gone. The chain had been cut, and the lock was on the ground.
  • EPD responded to a call at Trimble Hall on Feb. 19 at 12:31 a.m. A 20-year-0ld male student had trapped a rat in his closet. The rat had bit his finger when he tried to remove it from the room. Campus Life was notified, and an exterminator was contacted.
  • On Feb. 20 at 6:50 a.m., EPD responded to a call reporting that a 20-year-old female student at McTyiere Hall was intoxicated. The subject’s roomate tried to wake her and contacted EPD and Emory First Responder Unit when she could not wake the individual. The subject stated that she had been drinking at a friend’s apartment. EPD confiscated a fake driver’s license, which the student said a friend at Georgia Tech made for her.
