Podcast Press – Kevin Smith announces “S.I.R” – SModcast Internet Radio

Being the unconventional and uniquely creative being that he is, film-director and podcast extraordinaire Kevin Smith has chosen to ‘break the mold’ once again by taking his podcast network (SModcast) and evolving it into a full-fledged Internet Radio Station.

I’ve taken excerpts from his interviews, tweets and blog posts to create this press release. I hope it fulfills all the information you might need about this exciting update in podcasting.

Kevin Smith announces S.I.R. – SModcast Internet Radio

Film-maker Kevin Smith has announced via G4TV1 that he will soon be taking his SModcast Podcast Network over the air-waves with SModcast Internet Radio.

Smith also took to Twitter2 to announce that he will be partnering with STITCHER Radio to bring this radio station to life and will also be streaming at SModcast.com3.

The daily programming will consist of the following (NOTE: All times in PST):3

  • SMorning – Hosted by Kevin Smith and Jenn Schwalbach
    8 AM –10 AM

  • SModcast Block – The usual SModcast Podcast daily shows
    10 AM — 12 PM

  • Jay and Silent Bob Get Jobs – Hosted by Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes
    12PM — 2 PM

Kevin Smith has stated “After the first month, others will slowly wade into the stream as well. The aim is to have 12 hours of live content by the six month mark.”
Shows will be available to download one hour after airtime, successfully combining the idea of podcasts and a live radio station.3

“The beauty of SModcast.com is that it’s always there for you – on-demand for instant download. With the addition of the live stream, all of those shows can be reintroduced daily – and chances are, you’ll rarely ever hear repeats. It’s like the corny ol’ adage says: ‘You can never step into the same stream twice.'” -Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith has also announced a sub-feature of his Internet Radio Station — PodU — In which he will be streaming podcasts he receives via e-mail.
All podcast hosts that are interested can send an e-mail with their show to PodU@smodcast.com.
Please be sure to read the following FAQ supplied by Kevin Smith before e-mailing your shows:

– Only one submission per show, so choose carefully. Multiple entries from the same show will void eligibility.
– If selected, you’ll receive an email confirming your identity/authorship two weeks out from airing, affording you ample time to inform your audience.
– Remember: we’re still in full-on build mode, so do not expect any answers for some time.
– Multiple “Did mine make it” emails/Tweets/phone-calls/blogs/FacebookUpdates will also void eligibility.
– Campaigning will also kill your eligibility, so no spamming me with “Do so-and-so’s show!”, unless you wanna insure so-and-so gets passed over.
– Your podcast will speak for itself.
– On the Pod U. page, we’ll post a bi-weekly schedule of our selects in advance.
– Again: this won’t start ’til after our first month of programming the earliest. 3

The daily shows on SModcast Internet Radio begin May 9, 20113 and you can tune in via the STITCHER radio App on your favorite mobile device.

The idea of live shows isn’t new to podcasting. Leo Laporte has had live shows for a very long time and he also hosts a weekly radio show which he later uploads as a podcast. Adam Carolla has also integrated a live element into his podcast. GeekBeat.TV has also recently started doing weekly LIVE shows that are almost separate entities from their bi-daily video podcasts.

Live shows seems to be the biggest trend in podcasting and I certainly welcome it with open arms. It will be interesting to see how this affects podcasting. I feel the biggest news to come from all is “PodU”. Kevin Smith truly believes in the underdog. We should be pretty excited for the opportunities this could present for small-time podcast hosts and what it means for the future of podcasting.

Perhaps it’s time for a look into the past?

Later days.

  2. I really like your site. It has a very professional feel to it and full of many graphics that keep the attention span of people [ADHD] like me interested. I am going to come back to this site and listen to your content, especially the one about Kevin Smith. He is one of my favorite indy film makers.

FYI I have bookmarked your site
