Gary is SpongeBob's pet snail. Within the series, snails are analogous to cats, and as such Gary vocalizes like one. SpongeBob can apparently translate Gary's meows and purrs. A running gag on the show is that SpongeBob must not forget to feed him. Gary has talked a few times in the series. Also despite his limited speech, he is shown to be one of the smartest characters.
