The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth, in partnership with the Texas Education Agency and the National Center for Homeless Education, is offering two free webinars to provide high school counselors with information about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and homelessness.  Specifically, on questions 55-57 on the FAFSA, the definition of homeless, how to identify and verify such students, and how to support their college access.

Supporting Youth Who Are “Homeless” in High School and Beyond

It’s the time of year when high school counselors and financial aid administrators prepare to assist students with the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Did you know that some students living in temporary or inadequate housing have special rights when completing the FAFSA, as well as rights to immediate enrollment and full participation in high school?

This interactive webinar, designed specifically for high school counselors, will provide important information about helping youth who qualify as “homeless” to participate fully in high school, prepare for post-secondary education, and complete the FAFSA. Topics include:

• · The legal definition of “homeless” (much broader than what most educators expect)
• · A brief primer on the McKinney-Vento Act, including immediate enrollment and full participation for homeless youth
• · Determining independent student status for unaccompanied homeless youth filling out the FAFSA
• · What high school counselors can do to support homeless youth in high school and beyond

In addition to school counselors, the webinar is open to McKinney-Vento homeless liaisons, financial aid administrators, and any high school, higher education or community program staff interested in more information about homeless youth.

We also are pleased to offer free CPE/CEUs. After completing the training, participants will receive a link to an on-line evaluation. Upon submission of the evaluation, a downloadable CEU certificate will be available.
