Reports show that at least 12 people have been killed in the floods that have hit 8 southern Thai provinces, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Trang, Chumphon, Songkhla, Krabi and Phang Na.

The prime minister visited Nakhon Si Thammarat yesterday to see the devastation first hand.

Seven of the deaths were in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 4 in Surat Thani and 1 in Phatthalung.

A total of 716,110 people in 80 districts of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Trang, Chumphon, Songkhla, Krabi and Phang Nga were affected by the flooding.

Damage estimated at 1.5 billion baht was caused to 311 roads in Surat Thani.

Thousands of tourists are stranded on the holiday island of Koh Samui and hundreds of stranded travellers scrambled for air tickets out of Samui International airport, after hearing that two planes had managed to take off for Bangkok earlier in the day.

There were many power outs caused by downed power lines and there are some reports of deaths due to electrocution folowing the fallen power lines.

The aircraft carrier HTMS Chakri Narabuet and two smaller vessels, HTMS Sukhothai and Gor911, are rescuing people from the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Pang-ngan and Koh Samui.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Cape Talumpuk,  four-metre waves have pounded the coastline.

The widespread flooding in the region brought by heavy rain has ravaged 2,763 villages, affecting 310,406 households.

Today the rains have eased somewhat, but there are reports of more to come.
