Sacramento Things to Do

The proud capital of the State of California, Sacramento, is the seventh most populated city in the state. During the era of the California Gold Rush, Sacramento was a very important city, acting as a terminus and cross roads for the Pony Express, stagecoaches, river boats, wagons and the first transcontinental railroads. With a rich and interesting history, and a Mediterranean climate, it's little wonder why so many tourists decide to visit the capital city of California whilst visiting this sunny state. Here is a list of some of the things we recommend you do or see in Sacramento.

The Crocker Art Museum is the longest running museum west of the Mississippi River, having been founded in 1885. This is a great place to visit to learn about and experience the history of the area through art, specifically the Gold Rush era. Popular names from the collection found here include Thomas Hill's 'Great Canyon of the Sierra', William Hahn's 'Market Scene' and Charles Christian Nahl's 'Sunday Morning in the Mines'. The art is beautiful as is the building itself, so this makes a great cultural visit.

The California State Railroad Museum is another cultural must-see destination. The museum focuses on Sacramento's history of being the central point of connection between California and the rest of the country. It has twenty one restored locomotives, some almost one hundred and fifty years old. During the summer, visitors can hop aboard the steam train which goes along the Sacramento River. This is a museum which even children will get a kick out of.

For those that like to get out and about, the American River Cycling Trail will make a great day out. The trail takes cyclists through beautifully lush park areas, alongside the river and also past lake Natoma. There is a place to stop at the end where you can have a bite to eat before turning back. With the likelihood of the weather being wonderful, as it often is in Sacramento, this will be a really enjoyable and sporty day for anyone brave enough to try it.

This is just a small selection of things which you can do in Sacramento. Stay here for a few days and you'll find out that a few days is not enough to discover all the city has to offer.
