How to Clean Up Cookies and Remove Temporary Files in Windows XP

In this tip we will show you how to remove cookies and temporary files that you won’t need anymore and speed up your Windows and free up some additional space.

What are Cookies? They are a text file that stores on your computer anytime you visit a site and they
track you do. This could slow your computers, because everytime you access a site, it takes time to download them.

What are Temporary Files? Temp Files are all the files or folders installed, opened or used by
administrator. This could take a lot of space, and is recommended to delete them.

Note: System Volume Information and Temp Files are the most affected by viruses and spyware. It is
recommended to have a good AntiVirus or a good AntiSpyware.

Step 1 – Show Hidden Files

Very Important !

You must have the Hidden Files Turned Off, so you can delete your cookies and temporary files !

After you’re done with Hidden Files you can start with Step 2.

Step 2 – Locate Folders

Go to My Computer.

Go to Documents and Settings Folder.

Go to Your Windows Account Name Folder.

Here is an example: C:/Documents and Settings/John Smith

Very good. Here are our 2 Folders who must be cleaned up.

  • Cookies
  • Local Settings (Read Step 3)

Step 3 – Delete Cookies and Temporary Files

After you Deleted All Files in Cookies Folder (without index.dat – access denied) you can continue with the Local Settings Folder

Now you must Delete All in the below folders:

  • Temp
  • Temporary Internet Files

Notes:
– Also you can delete all folder C:/System Volume Information
– Files in use can’t be deleted. Delete only what you can
