Personal Garden Labyrinth in Garden Valley, California - click on photos to enlarge
This is a classic seven circuit design initiated in the fall of 2002 after attending the Sacramento Labyrinth Society Conference in California. It has two foot wide paths and is 32 feet in diameter. Missing is the initial stage of painting the design as a temporary labyrinth in 2002. The top row of photos were taken in 2003 when we placed all the rocks on top of the painted lines as a three day family project. All the stones were gathered from the property. The following year we added gravel to the paths, placed a mounded planter bed around the perimeter of the labyrinth and planted several species of deer resistant flowers and trees. The photos in the second row were taken in June of 2006.
THE ABODE OF PEACE COMMUNITY LABYRINTH
This is a much larger labyrinth using the Chartres pattern that incorportated the use of over 250 tons of serpentine stone and boulders that took months to place from February through April of 2008. The labyrinth is 125 feet in diameter and the center is 30 ft across. It was built at the Abode of Peace Yoga Retreat Center in Georgetown, California and it is open to the public. Additional landscaping within and around the labyrinth has continued through the years and it will continue to be a work in progress for years to come.
While it is common to use stones collected nearby to create garden labyrinths the materials you can use are really limited only by your imagination. The use of stone pavers, gravel, mulch, bricks, rope, wood blocks or planks, mounded earth, flower plantings or even mowing the pattern in long grass can create wonderful results and David is ready to help you bring your ideas to fruition.
