HD Studio – Room to Grow
If you have a little more room to grow, or you want to move it up a notch. Below is a list of items to help you get started. Unlike the smaller studio we built the year before, this studio takes us to the next level of live HD production. The Synergy 1 MD Digital Switcher has motion graphic, chroma key and special effects capabilities, and unlike the Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme in our smaller studio, which is limited to two camera hook-ups and static graphic overlays, the Synergy switcher provides multiple input and outputs.

There lots of monitors to choose from these days. We chose the Samsung 50-inch PPM50M5H for size, clarity and its compatibility with our Mac video resolution settings. If you choose another brand, be sure to test it with your computer before you buy. Most vendors would love to let you test one, and in some cases, they will drop off a test model. Pioneer (Elite) and Sony also make wonderful studio monitors.

Blue Sky ProDesk 2.1 Desktop Monitoring System
Includes two SAT 5 MK II speakers and a SUB 8 Universal sub-woofer.

After testing several pairs of studio monitors, these Blue Sky ProDesk 2.1 speakers came to the top. Matter-of-fact, these speakers are the best I’ve heard in my entire life. Every review I found gave these speakers a five-star rating. One review said that after discovering Skywalker Ranch used these in several of their sound design suites, they thought, “Heck, if it’s good enough for George Lucas it’s good enough for me.”

Wait. Is that me or is that a Onyx Mackie mixer in the Skywalker picture too? We’re using both the 12, 16 and 24 channel Mackie Onyx Mixers. The built in equalizer and talk-back system are a plus.

Miranda’s Network Series SL-HD1616-R-CP Router
Miranda’s Network Series HD/SD routers are highly affordable and easy to use, and range in size from 16 x 2 up to 128 x 128. The range has been extended with a new 64 x 64 modular router, new customizable panels, and an Ethernet Gateway and Protocol converter, which improve system interconnection.


(3) JVC RM-HP250AU Camera Control Unit
The RM-HP250AU is a multi-core camera control unit capable of both HD and SD operation with a cable extension of up to 100m. The unit has both HD and SD SDI output and has local remote control capability with the RM-LP25U Remote Control Panel.


(2) AJA FS1 Frame Synchronizer and Bi-directional Converter
The AJA FS1 is a universal SD/HD audio/video frame synchronizer and converter. This converter offers an “everything in, everything out” architecture. The FS1 can work simultaneously with both HD and SD video for broadcast quality video and 24-bit audio.


Grass Valley Turbo iDDR Intelligent Digital Disk Recorder
The Grass Valley Turbo iDDR is a digital disk recorder designed to perform a wide variety of VTR functions, while being cost-effective and user-friendly. The Turbo records video directly to memory using MPEG-2 compression technology. Its variety of input options allows quick and easy retrieval of project footage at the touch of a button. Whether the application is live event work or post production, the deck will significantly increase overall efficiency, allowing producers to focus more on the creative process.

The Turbo iDDR can be used to output both SD and HD content simultaneously as well as having full connectivity to external media storage devices. All of these features translate into a highly versatile VTR perfect for high-end studios, live events and editing workstations.
