1. 1. Wait for X-Plane 10 or order XP 9 now

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I plan to order X-Plane after "playing" the Demo for a while. It will be my first flight simulator.
But I am very confused, because I don't know what the best thing is: Should I order XP 9 now or should I wait for XP 10.
I don't want to spend money for both versions, because I am a "poor" student.

Do you know when X-Plane 10 will be released and how much it will cost?

I hope my English is not too bad, so you can understand me.

I can't speak for how much its costing. That $80 is far more than it used to be, but it has got a lot more work gone into it....

As for release date. It will be more round the november mark, He wants it out in time for christmas.

If you're a poor student, now is the ideal time to grab 9. It's inexpensive, and the add-ons available are almost countless (almost! ;)). Even once 10 arrives, the early versions are usually not the best, and there's obviously no add-ons designed for 10 at first (though 9 stuff should work fine in it).

You definitely can't beat the $29 price of XP-9. More importantly, do you have a computer that will do it justice?

Poor is something I am well acquainted. If I can afford it, anyone can. Enjoy. :)

XP10 is on Santa's List and pegged up already, certainly go XP9, Its a ridiculous bargain, in fact it is stupidly low price for what you get (sorry Austin but it is), There is a lot to learn and a lot to get through, 7 months in and I still have a way to go, so it is a really great primer that will help when XP10 is released, however you do need a good computer and acres of disk space to get the best out of it, finding the money for XP10...
...no problem, you will find it, promise you, you will.

The first builds of 10 should give you plenty of grief. There's plenty of joy left in 9. If costs are an issue, wait until 10 goes to 10.2 and the price comes down (big if ~ though maybe the US will see Japan-style deflation by then) or you upgrade your system. The $29 price for XP9 is now fair given that it is close to EOL and there is no upgrade-to-10 price. Eighteen months ago I would have called it "ridiculously" low.

X-P nine is a fabulous bargain, and v10 promises better flight characteristics and a world of eye candy aircraft and lighting, scenery, and detail. Seems to me that that is going to put a new load on processing power.

My only concern, beyond the purchase price increase, is just what kind of computer system support will it require for decent performance? Will I have to consider junking my present system to run the new version? If that happens, then the purchase price increase pales in comparison to the equipment costs involved in the upgrade.

Does anyone have a read on this? ---Norvell

Way too early to speculate about hardware specifics, but there's always the option to not crank up all that new eye candy.

Like anything else, there will be a price for having it all - but they've always been very good about having very flexible rendering options that allow a wide range of hardware to work.

I've read a lot of seemingly "authoritative" posts on several forums about this subject, but it all amounts to speculation. The few people (Laminar) who would be able to give you a best guess aren't saying much (presumably because they're hard at work).

It's not a stretch to presume that Laminar is targeting the pre-Christmas market as a launch window in order to maximize sales - particularly in a still slightly depressed US economy. Whether they make it or not will be known soon enough, but large projects always go overtime and over-budget. Writing, designing and programming such a complex beast can lead to a lot of unexpected snags and delays. Don't be surprised if an early (buggy) Beta version is released in time for the Christmas market, followed some months after by a more stable x.1 release. It's happened before.

If past version releases are any indication of what we can expect in the future, even if X-Plane 10 is released in late November (which I doubt) it might be late January or February, before a truly stable, mostly bug-free release is available. Also, traditionally, there have been discounts to those who have previous versions of X-Plane when the new version arrives. Unless you're fine to wait 3-6 months, it might be worth it to purchase a copy of v9 at a discount now, work the kinks out and fly happily for several months and buy v10 at a discount when it becomes available.

Just something to consider.

Hi guys, forgive me for not supporting the forum by purchasing here. I found X Plane 9 on E-bay for $15, and then I found the forum. I played with the demo a few days, and decided to add X Plane to my sim collection. Been a Microsoft victim since FS5, about 12 years.

Hi everyone. I too had already purchased a copy of X-Plane from Amazone before finding this site, otherwise I'd have purchased it here in support.

I've found lots of downloads to make X-Plane better, It took me 2 minutes to learn how to take off and 3 days to learn how to land! Yesterday I maxxed out my downloads for the day, so I'll be back soon to get some more.

I didn't really think about a newer version coming out, I was sold on the idea that any .xx upgrade would be free up to 10.0 so thought it'd be a while.

I have a notebook/laptop with:

a. Intel-Core-2-Duo-CPU P8700 @2.53 GHz
b. ATI MOBILITY Radeon HD 4560
c. 4GB RAM
d. Windows 7 (64-bit)

Do I have any problems running XP-9 and later XP-10?

I don't want to buy XP-9 AND several months later XP-10. I want to buy EITHER XP-9 OR XP-10.

Akanaut,

if both are not an option you have your decision.
If you want to fly now get 9, else wait for 10.
Easy.

Your answer doesn't really help me to decide, but thanks for your comment.

Heh! Dr. Coolgood is sometimes too cool for his own good |||~chuckles~|||. But he's right in a sense. XP 9 is your only option to fly XP legally until 10 is out. So it's a question of whether you can afford to wait half-a-year or skip a movie and a burger or two and fly it now. Only you'd know the answer to that question.

XP 9 Pros

You can fly now
Cheap

XP 9 Cons

Once XP10 is released and well established, with all the initial bugs ironed out (probably say ~9 months give or take from now), most aircraft developers will probably stop producing for XP9, so gradually the supply of new add ons will dry up. So in 12-18 months from now XP9 will be static, while XP10 will be expanding and developing, so you would miss out on all exciting features that will come with that.

XP10 Pros - It's the version that will see all the new development, and will bring lots of features currently missing from XP 9 (decent ATC etc).
XP Cons - It will probably be at least 6 months before it's out of the beta stage.
Initially it will probably cost more than the curent price for XP9.
If your computer system is more than a couple of years old already, you might need to upgrade some bits of hardware to run shiny new graphics features.

Well, I guess only you know what the most important factors are for you personally, and you should make your choice on the basis of those.

Life's to short to wait for anything under 100 bucks that I want;o) As far as I'm concerned, got my moneys worth the first couple of days using X Plane 9.

Asking repeatedly won't change the answers you're getting.

That timeline is what Laminar has stated publicly.

If you want to use the sim NOW, buy it NOW - worry about v10 when it's released several months down the road.

At what v9 costs you'll have already gotten your money's worth out of it in a couple days, and there's no reason you'd have to immediately stop using it when v10 is released
