The latest in Cowboys news. Eric Kendricks changes tune, now says he loves playing for Mike Zimmer - Michael David Smith, PFT
Eric Kendricks walks back his comment on Mike Zimmer made a few years ago.
Eric Kendricks played for Mike Zimmer for seven seasons in Minnesota, but after Zimmer was fired as the Vikings’ head coach, Kendricks said Zimmer’s “fear-based” leadership was the wrong approach for the team.
So when Kendricks signed with the Cowboys this year, agreeing to play linebacker under Zimmer as defensive coordinator, that raised the question: Why return to play for a coach he criticized two years ago?
“Emotions were high,” Kendricks now says of his comments about Zimmer then, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. “We’re very excited. It’s good to be back with him. I love his walkthroughs. I love the little ways he does things, the way he structures things, the level of detail, so I’m excited. I really am.”
Kendricks also says that despite the comments at the time, he respected Zimmer.
“Yeah absolutely, I always appreciated Zim,” Kendricks said. “Just the amount of defense I learned when I was underneath him. The way I watch film, the way we break things down, the install, a lot of things I learned from Zim and we had some good years and I can’t wait to continue that.”
Cooks looking for ‘huge’ second year in Dallas - Nick Harris, DallasCowboys.com
Brandin Cooks came on late last season and hopes 2024 will be more of the same.
“Having a season under my belt with Dak, started slow that first half of the season but we picked it up,” Cooks said. “I think, overall as a team, we know what we have. Continue to focus on the task at hand and let everything else take care of itself.”
Cooks and a young receiver corps headlined by Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks and Ryan Flournoy have been the benefactors during OTAs from CeeDee Lamb’s absence as he awaits a new contract extension with the team. Those opportunities, Cooks said, are invaluable to build rapport with Dak Prescott for whenever Lamb does make his return.
“I think it’s huge during this time of year,” he said. “To be able to get these valuable reps, especially these guys that just came in or the guys that may have not gotten many reps with Dak last year. These are important to be able to create that timing before training camp.”
Cooks admitted that his start to the 2023 season, along with the rest of the offense, wasn’t ideal. This time around, it’ll be increasingly important for the Cowboys to start hot with the tough part of the schedule frontloaded in 2024.
“I think this time of the year we’re in review mode,” he said. “We’ve got a year under our belt learning the offense. To be able to pick that pace up, I think that’s going to be huge. When you come out week one, you gotta be able to hit the ground running rather than work out those kinks.”
Storms Cause Power Outage at The Star, Practice Canceled: VIDEO - Mike Fisher, Cowboys Country
The Cowboys will be delayed starting this week’s OTAs.
Heavy storms and 80 MPH winds raged through the night and into Tuesday morning here at The Star in Frisco, at one point causing a power outage at Dallas Cowboys headquarters - leading to a cancellation of the day’s planned OTAs.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the weather here has calmed and the team’s second week of OTAs should get re-booted on Wednesday. ... though more inclement weather could be in the week’s forecast.
Ranking players Cowboys could add before training camp: These ex-Pro Bowlers would help Dallas in a big way - Garrett Podell, CBS Sports
A look at four players the team could still sign.
2. DL Calais Campbell
The Cowboys still have a need at defensive tackle even after addressing the position with a first-round pick in 2023 (Michigan’s Mazi Smith) and a seventh-round pick in 2024 (Auburn’s Justin Rogers). Signing six-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Calais Campbell could be exactly what the Cowboys need at the position for a year. While Campbell will turn 38 years old on Sept. 1, just before the 2024 season starts, he still appears to have gas in the tank.
He started all 17 games for the Atlanta Falcons last season while recording 6.5 sacks, 56 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 42 quarterback pressures, one fewer than New York Giants 2022 fifth-overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux and current Cowboys defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa in 2023.
Smith — shown below standing off to the side at Wednesday’s OTAs while rehabbing from offseason surgery and pushing to add more weight to his frame — Odighizuwa and Rogers could all learn a things or two from the 2010’s All-Decade Team member, who still stands at 6-foot-8 while weighing 282 pounds. Given Campbell’s age, Dallas could get him on a discount if he is eager for one last taste of postseason action after missing the playoffs in 2023 with the Falcons.
