Let's be honest...

While veterans possess a wealth of skills and experiences gained through their military service, it's important to acknowledge that these skills don't always seamlessly translate to the civilian workplace. The job market is constantly changing. So it's important to stay on top of these changes and continue to adapt your skills. While there are TONS of great tips out there, we've provided some proven techniques to help give you an edge on the competition.

Let's start with your Resume.

A quick google search will show you a wide variety of tips. Trust us, we've spent hours skimming the internet. While there's no perfect way, there are a lot of right ways. We've also learned that things have changed over time. Things that were common and standard on resumes decades ago, are now outdated and cant hurt your chances. of you resume being seen by a real person. 

But don't worry! We've got you covered. We've put together a list of some really effective (and our favorite) strategies... and some no-go's.

Limit your resume to one or two pages and use bullet points, headings, and subheadings to organize information effectively. Focus on your most relevant achievements and experiences. Don't add a page for references. That, just, takes up valuable space, since we want to keep your resume, no more than 2 pages.

Highlight your accomplishments:

Instead of simply listing your job responsibilities, emphasize your accomplishments and quantifiable results. Use specific numbers, percentages, or metrics to showcase your achievements and demonstrate the value you brought to previous roles. When you use symbols, it helps break up any monotony and draws attention to that point. 

Use Power Verbs

Similar to the above, when talking about your accomplishments, start your bullet points with words, such as , Lead, Developed, Increased , Created, Produced. Here's a few examples to get you thinking. Take note of what words are repeated on the job posting.

  • Increased revenue by 30% in 3rd quarter 2022

  • Developed onboarding process that decreased costs by 5%

  • Created online marketing campaign which lead to 

  • Awarded top customer service rating  - 2021 , 2022

The One-Third Test

Recruiters typically spend about 6-10 seconds reviewing a resume before deciding whether to keep reading or move on to the next candidate. To pass the one-third test, your resume should capture the reader's attention and provide key information within the top third of the first page. 

  1. Start with a compelling summary or profile: Begin your resume with a concise and impactful summary or profile statement that highlights your key skills, experiences, and qualifications. This section should give a quick overview of your value proposition as a candidate.

  2. Use bullet points and headings: Utilize bullet points to present information in a clear and concise manner. Use headings and subheadings to break up sections and make it easy for recruiters to skim and locate the information they need

Automated Tracking System

The ATS software uses parsing technology to extract relevant information from the submitted resumes. It analyzes the document's structure and identifies sections such as contact details, work experience, education, and skills Keyword matching: ATS systems often employ keyword matching algorithms. The software scans the resume for specific keywords and phrases related to the job description. These keywords are typically the skills, qualifications, or job requirements outlined by the employer. Resumes with a higher keyword match percentage are more likely to proceed to the next stage.. This is the first stop, before you resume gets in front of human eyes. ​

  1. Define your goals and preferences: Clarify what type of job you are seeking, including the industry, role, location, and desired company culture. This will help you target your search and focus your efforts.

  2. Update your resume and tailor it: Customize your resume for each job application to highlight relevant skills and experiences. Emphasize achievements and quantify your accomplishments where possible. Make sure your resume is well-organized, error-free, and easy to read.

  3. Create a compelling cover letter: Craft a strong cover letter that demonstrates your interest in the specific role and company. Tailor it to match the job requirements and showcase your qualifications and motivations.

  4. Leverage your network: Reach out to your personal and professional connections for job leads, recommendations, or introductions. Attend networking events, join industry groups, and engage with relevant online communities to expand your network.

  5. Use online job boards and platforms: Explore popular job search websites, such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and Monster. Set up job alerts based on your criteria, and regularly check these platforms for new opportunities.

  6. Research companies: Learn about potential employers to understand their mission, values, culture, and recent news or projects. This knowledge will help you tailor your application and prepare for interviews.

  7. Polish your online presence: Ensure your social media profiles, particularly LinkedIn, present a professional image. Remove any inappropriate content and highlight your relevant skills and experiences.

  8. Prepare for interviews: Research common interview questions and practice your responses. Prepare examples that showcase your skills, achievements, and problem-solving abilities. Dress professionally and arrive on time for in-person or virtual interviews.

  9. Follow up after interviews: Send a thank-you email or note to the interviewer(s) within 24-48 hours. Express your appreciation for their time and reiterate your interest in the position.

  10. Continuously learn and improve: If you encounter rejections, view them as learning opportunities. Seek feedback, identify areas for improvement, and refine your approach accordingly.
