Welcome to Botswana-SME Portal a site that seeks to provide you with updated, accurate and comprehensive information about the socio-economic development and investment opportunities in Botswana and the SADC Region.

Botswana is a land-locked country dominated in geographical terms by the Kalahari Desert - a sand-filled basin averaging 1,100 metres above sea level. The country lies between longitudes 20 and 30 degrees east of Greenwich and between the latitudes 18 and 27 degrees approximately south of the Equator. Because of its geographical location, Botswana has four seasons, and thus the potential to grow crops from the temperate and tropical regions. Botswana is bordered by Zambia and Zimbabwe to the northeast, Namibia to the north and west, and South Africa to the south and southeast. At Kazungula, four countries-Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia - meet at a single point mid-stream in the Zambezi River.

Doing Business in Botswana and South Africa

Southern Africa is considered to be the most stable region on the African continent. It is for that reason there is a constant stream of entrepreneurs from India, China, the Middle East and Europe queuing up to take advantage of the region’s vast mineral resources and arable land.

However, I would like to encourage individuals seeking to do business to be patient and learn the business culture quickly and be prepared to respect the way things are done locally both in Botswana and South Africa.

Personally, I have been frustrated in getting enterprises to look externally for new markets and for new venture partners. Generally SMEs seem to be prepared to concentrate on the market they know best, if even the do not have the capacity and economies scale to penetrate their local market.

There are tremendous opportunities available in both countries especially in agri-processing, infrastructural development, LED projects, etc.  There are also institutions available to assist new companies to set up and find suitable local partners.
