DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHER

BIOGRAPHY

K evin Bubriski has exhibited worldwide; his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the International Center of Photography, all in New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. A recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Asian Cultural Council, Bubriski worked for nine years in Nepal, and has photographed his journeys to India, Tibet, and Bangladesh. Author of Portrait of Nepal (Chronicle), which won the Golden Light Documentary Award in 1993, and Power Places of Kathmandu: Hindu and Buddhist Holy Sites in the Sacred Valley of Nepal (Inner Traditions), Bubriski lives in Vermont with his wife.

Our Voices, Our Streets: American Protests 2001-2011

Photographs by Kevin Bubriski, Foreword by Lucy McKeon, Afterword by Howard Zinn The American street has always been the ultimate public venue for political and cultural expression. This collection of images by Kevin Bubriski covers a decade of American street protest that began on January 20, 2001 with the inauguration of George W. Bush and ended with Occupy Wall Street in October of 2011. The crowds in the street at the 2001 inauguration made it clear America was at a difficult and defining moment after a contentious election. Following the inauguration of 2001 and the tragedy of 9/11, the American streets— as they have been since the country’s founding—became the setting for numerous memorials and vigils, parades and protests. These photographs chronicle events in New York, Washington, D.C., and Vermont. The gatherings were large and sometimes small, and in both cases usually unnoticed by the mainstream media. These street portraits show a diversity of Americans: veterans, families of men and women on active duty, families of the victims of the 9/11 tragedy, parents of U.S. servicemen and women killed in the Iraq War, security personnel, police, Muslim Americans, anti-war activists, disenfranchised minorities, and anarchist youth. The common denominators that unite these images are the lens of the Hasselblad camera and the public stage of the American streets.

Legacy in Stone: Syria Before War

A collection of 100 black-and-white photographs taken throughout Syria in 2003, documenting many important ancient sites which are now no longer there due to the still on-going Syrian civil war.

Seven months after the start of the US war in neighboring Iraq, Kevin Bubriski was on two magazine assignments in Aleppo, Syria. At this time of conflict, he sought out assignment work in Syria because he wanted to photograph the deep cultural history there and the human face of Syria, its ordinary people and their daily lives.

Until the Syrian civil war started in 2010 the Aleppo, the Suq was considered to be the longest continuously inhabited place of commerce in the world, for well over two millennia. The Aleppo Suq and many of the places captured in his photographs have since been destroyed in the Syrian civil war.

After his assignments in Aleppo he stayed on in Syria to photograph independently throughout the northern early Christian Dead Cities, the basilica of San Simeon, the Christian pilgrimage sites of Serjila, al Bara, Kharab Shams, Mushabak, Baqirha, Qalb Loze, Resafe, early Islamic sites near Raqqa, and the ancient Roman trade cities of Apamea, and Palmyra. He remembers the absolute solitude of being in these ancient cultural sites with only his Syrian guide. It was the rainy season, it was Ramadan, and there was a new war going on next door in Iraq. There were no other travelers at any of the places he visited except for a small handful of German and Russian tourists at Palmyra, his last stop before returning to Damascus to travel home.

There was an eerie sense of discovery to be in these places of such rich history and haunting beauty. He recalls holding his breath as he saw the ruins before him take shape on the ground glass of the analog film Hasselblad camera, and feeling very fortunate for being a witness to the beauty of the ancient monuments.

Kailash Yatra

M ount Kailash is a holy mountain on the western edge of the Tibetan Plateau in China. Over recent decades, this eerily symmetrical mountain, holy to Bonpos, Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, animists and New Age seekers, has emerged as a globally important site for pilgrimage and tourism. This mountain lies close to the point where the borders of north India and western Nepal meet China. What has been relatively little known to the general audience is the central role that transborder interdependence has played in shaping the lives, livelihoods and culture of the communities residing in these borderland regions, in the proximity of Kailash.

In the monsoon of 2016, an international team of social scientists, artists and members of the local community undertook a difficult 300-kilometre-long trek from district Humla, western Nepal, into the Tibetan Autonomous Region, China. The aim was to document and understand the contemporary rhythms of livelihoods, material culture and perceptions of the sacred among the communities living along an ancient southern route to Mount Kailash, which had been in use for transborder trade and pilgrimage for several centuries. This book, studded with lush photographs, brings to life several individuals and scenes encountered during this expedition-stories of the past, of change, of aspirations, of the sheer beauty and vulnerabilities of life in one of the least accessible but most sacred corners of the world.

Mustang in Black and White

T his book is a photographic documentation of Hispanic New Mexicans (Nuevomexicanos) taken between 1981 and 1983 in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and in several northern New Mexico villages. The people, whether looking directly into the lens or away from it, appear to be at ease with the photographer and his camera. Pilgrimage: Looking at Ground Zero

I n the weeks immediately following September 11, Kevin Bubriski made four pilgrimages to the World Trade Center site from his home in Vermont to witness and record the impact of the tragedy. Like so many who had experienced the events from a distance, Bubriski was driven to visit Ground Zero in an attempt to come to terms with the horrifying scenes reported on television and in the papers. At the barricades surrounding the site, Bubriski found people experiencing not only a remarkable sense of community, but also the deepest kind of personal reflection on loss and mortality.

Businessmen, teenage friends, families, young lovers, and visitors from around the world approached the site slowly, and eventually came to a full stop, planting their feet firmly as if to keep themselves from wavering or falling. Each visitor then began a moment of quiet reflection, staring off at the mountainous ruins of twisted steel and debris amidst an omnipresent swirl of acidic smoke. It was at this time that the reality of the devastation set in.

Nepal: 1975-2011

P hotographer Kevin Bubriski has been visually documenting the country and people of Nepal since his first visit in 1975. Sent as a young Peace Corps volunteer to the northwest Karnali Zone, the country’s remotest and most economically depressed region, he spent three years walking the length and breadth of the Karnali, planning and overseeing construction of gravity flow drinking water pipelines. He also photographed the local villagers, producing an extraordinary series of 35mm and large format black-and-white images. For nearly four decades, Bubriski has maintained his close association with Nepal and its people. F rom April to August 1961, recent Harvard graduate Michael Clark Rockefeller was a sound recordist and still photographer on a remarkable multidisciplinary expedition to the Dani people of highland New Guinea. Human Documents: Eight Photographers

I n Human Documents, Robert Gardner introduces the work of photographers with whom he has worked over a period of nearly fifty years under the auspices of the Film Study Center at Harvard.
