During the unveiling of its product lineup, the European branch of consumer-electronics company Samsung announced that, in order to get customers started with stereoscopic home cinema, the 3D version of the 2009 Dreamworks Animation blockbuster Monsters vs. Aliens will be available exclusively bundled with Samsung Full HD 3D televisions, expected to launch in March.
At the moment, there is no information regarding the duration of that exclusivity deal, or whether it will also apply to the US.
3D video is no different than 3D sound. It requires an investment in new equipment to enjoy it over your standard 2D stuff (stereo speakers). It brings the action out beyond the plane of the screen and gives it depth. If you can't see 3D, fine. If you don't enjoy the experience, fine. If it's not worth the added money, fine. That doesn't make it a gimmick, because it still does offer an enhanced viewing experience to some people (many, if 3D theater ticket sales are anything to go by).
Good for Samsung. I didn't love the movie, but I think this is a good opportunity to make sure the technology is ready to go when someone gets it home.
3d isnt going to be very good. yes some people like it. and enjoy it. i respect that. but, on the other hand. some people are not capable of seeing the 3D picture. i read so in an article. something to do with the merging of the two pictures. i think im one of those people who cant merge the picture. it works sometimes for me. or maybe the effects arent that good. my friend and i were discussing avatar in 3D. for me it just looked like a 2D picture with some things popping out. whilst he was saying that the stuff was so close. so theres something to think about
FIRST, WE HAVE 2D NOW WE HAVE 3D, WHAT'S NEXT 4D OR 5D WHERE THE ACTUALLY BLOW UP YOUR HOUSE? I WONDER WHAT KIND OF TV YOU NEED FOR THAT? TO ME, IT ALL COMES TO HOW MUCH MONEY THEY CAN JUICE OUT OF THE CONSUMER. REMEMBER, "THERE IS A CRETIN BORN EVERYDAY".
I for 1 don't care what you pack with a tv, I just spent $1800 on my Samsung 42" plasma a year ago and it seems not only greedy but unfair that these companies made nothing 3D ready within the last 2 years even though they knew this was comming ... Also none of these companies seem to comfirm or deny the fact that you dont actually have to buy a new tv to view 3D you just need a bluray or PS3 with the firmware to process it .. So exclusive all the titles you want, its not going to matter, at the end of the day its going to be the lack of funds that stalls this tech.
Just FYI -- If you have a Sony store near you they have a 3D setup incase you actually want to see what 3D looks like at home. All in all the PS3 games are cool but the Cloudy with meatballs demo was very lacking.
My guess is that its only temporarily exclusive. I can't imagine it staying that way. Ill bet will see Monsters vs. Aliens avalible on its own before the end of the summer.
Yes the exclusivity is only temporary. It's just like the exclusive Superman Returns BD that came with the Panasonic BD30 (or whichever player it was). After a few months you can get it on its own, guaranteed.
There's a reason some of us foresaw this 3D introduction years ago - same as we awaited Blu-ray's arrival many moons ago. It's called being an educated consumer.
I've been waiting to buy a new TV for a few years now - to replace my 32" 720p model - it's nice to know my patience will soon be rewarded!
46" 1080p 3D HDMI 1.4 all the way! Oh yes, I held back buying a new receiver too!
This was easily the best 3-D movie I've ever seen. The effects were amazing and pristine. Can't wait to try this out in stores to see just how well 3-D at home will work. I won't be buying anything 3-D related until I can try it out for myself.
yippeee for 3D, FINALLY, but however I will be gettin the 72inch, 480hz, LED, 3D Vizio, which i bet will be 1k or more cheaper. i am not gonna let some kids movie influence me as to what tv to get, ummmmm, but i do think that Monsters Vs Aliens was the best 3D movie yet, i was blown away at the paddle ball scene, me and the whole theatre lol
Yah, I have a Sony 32" 720p LCD and Epson 1080p proj. right now and I must say I'm very pleased with both. That said, I'd buy a 3D TV (probably 52") when the time is right. I want it with the shuttered glasses, as they will rival even the polarized theatrical ones currently used. Those who still think anaglyph (red and blue) headache inducing glasses will be part of the NEW 3D plan need to do some researching... So, I say, 3D - why not? ;-)
