Tom Mix B-Movie Hat
Tom Mix (shown at left at the height of his fame) was the first cowboy star to wear outrageous outfits; and became, arguably, the first movie star earning 40,000 a week in 1925.
His films were enormously successful and followed a simple formula. The scripts were fast paced and featured plenty of action and chases on horse back. Mix’s movie horse was called Tony and Tony became a big star in his own right! Later Cowboy heroes copied the Mix formula, but none eclipsed Tom in popularity.
Before Mix became a cinema star he lived the cowboy way, serving as Town Marshal in Dewey, Oklahoma in 1912, and later performed in Wild West shows. Both Mix and another early western film star; William S. Hart, were pall bearers at Wyatt Earp’s funeral in 1929.
Yup, that Wyatt Earp. . . .
At the end of the 19th century when mail order catalogs were the Internet of the day, companies like Montgomery Ward and Sears and Roebuck offered ready made hats with names like Big Chief, Dakota, Calgary, Jolan, and Boss of the Plains.

Subject: Re: order Received [Tom Horn Cowboy Hat]
I received my hat today, and it is wonderful. The craftsmanship, the fit, the quality of felt, the hatband, the shape and color, and the inner band are spoton.
I’ve never had a hat of this quality or one that fits so perfectly. It came one day after my wife and my 35th anniversary, so great timing and worth the wait. A photo is attached.
Thank you, sincerely, John R. Morgan

Young Guns Circa 1870
Charley Utter, Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, Texas Jack Omohundro, and Elisha Green.
The photo that this poster was built around was originally taken in the early 1870s. At the time these men were performing in Ned Butlines “Scouts of the Prairie“. A kind of touring company of Wild West Marshals, Frontiersmen, and Wild Characters.
Buntline was a former newspaper man who wrote immensely popular “dime novels” or glamorized stories of the exploits of men of the untamed west. Buntline came from a wealthy family and without his promotion of them it is likely Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody may have just been foot notes in the history of the Wild West.
As bad as most of the acting was – Hickok’s stood out as the worst. Having been talked into doing this by Cody, Hickok was sour on the idea from the start. The whole idea of acting was disagreeable to Wild Bill and he left after about 6 months. Hickoks’ disdain can be seen on his face in this poster, and notice how carefully the other men have their firearms staged around them – except Wild Bill: He’s stood his long arm upside down!
He was called Wild Bill for a reason, and there wasn’t anyone that could calm him when he had the bit in his teeth. Hickok carried two 36 caliber Navy Colt cap and ball pistols and was deadly with them. For the “Scouts of the Prairie” shows he loaded one with live shot and the other blanks. With a curse and a quick pull and shoot, it was not unusual for Wild Bill to shoot out a spot light that shone too directly in his eyes. To the oohs and aaahs of the audience, and the terror of the spot light operator. For the safety of all involved it tis likely a good thing Bill only lasted six months in the show.

Subject: Review Secondhand Lions HatThis hat is perfect for my purposes. I spend a lot of time outside so a good hat is a must due to being sunburned easily and bald. It is well worth the wait. Size wise it is just right not too loose and not too tight. The ribbon and trim blend nicely with the granite coloring.
You’ll also be interested to know that I also plan to like the cowboys of old create my own hatband. All in all I would glad recommend your store for all my friends and even some enemies.
Sincerely yours Luke Blough.

Subject: Love the hat!Receives my Quigley a week ago. Have to admit I was very nervous buying a hat site unseen. My expectations were more than met. The hat fits and looks great.

We just received Josey Wales around 3:00pm. The box looked like it had been just put together. There was no dents scraped or tears in it.
Josey was out of his barn so to speak but was in beautiful shape which is testament to the quality of the work that you do the hat blew us away blew us away.
Hat (Bullock) received…and I could not be more pleased with it. Your company is, hands down, my favorite hat-making company.
You can quote me.
In person the cowboys were mostly medium-sized men… quick and wiry, and as a rule very good-natured; in fact, it did not pay to be anything else. In character, their like never was or will be again. – Teddy Blue Abbott; Cowboy 1882

If a cowboy hat is a regular part of your attire, and you think that black jeans are dress pants, then you are going to want to read The Last Best West™ . This is the book that started our website more than 2 decades ago. Written by Longfellow it tells a powerful story of revenge and redemption.
Set in 1896 amidst the chaos of the Klondike Gold Rush, The Last Best West™ tells the story of a lifelong grudge between Wasey Bruce and Poke Roberts. Their hatred travels the breadth of the North American West and sets the men on different paths for the gold fields of the Klondike River. Fate brings the men together again in Dawson City, where millionaires are a dime a dozen and horses are as rare as a pretty woman. See at Amazon.com
