During his undergraduate journey at UNCW, Diandre’ Richie ’24 experienced unexpected opportunities, from conducting research to studying abroad. His enthusiasm for research earned him the prestigious NOAA Hollings Scholarship.
Anay Soto-Gomez's journey to becoming a teacher was driven by the desire to ease the burden of children who struggle to find a sense of belonging. Soto-Gomez hopes to inspire students to see themselves in her story.
Having moved from Ontario, Canada, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michelle Kerr's initial Seahawk experiences were remote, with classes held online and few opportunities to connect in person. However, she was determined to find her place at UNCW.

Excavating Evidence of Early Agricultural Engineering
With the use of a side-scan sonar and positioning systems, researchers are searching for archaeological evidence of the rice fields once situated along the lower Cape Fear and Brunswick rivers’ banks.
UNCW researchers and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management are studying Frying Pan Shoals as a possible offshore sand source. The university will receive $2 million in funding for the four-year collaborative research project.
The North Carolina Ecosystem Technology project has been awarded $1 million from the U.S. National Science Foundation's Regional Innovation Engines, or NSF Engines, to develop an economic engine that could rapidly improve the quality of life in rural coastal communities using ecosystem technology, or ecotech, an emerging branch of applied science.
UNCW researchers in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History have discovered the first effective bacterial probiotic for treating and preventing stony coral tissue loss disease, a mysterious ailment that has devastated Florida’s coral reefs since 2014 and is rapidly spreading throughout the Caribbean.
Coastal Eco Explorer is a mobile application guiding Carolina Beach State Park hikers in the exploration of ecologically sensitive terrain. This pioneering app was created by faculty in the Watson College of Education in collaboration with North Caroline State Park rangers.
