2 June: Singaround: Informal, unplugged song circle

Another of our popular singaround evenings.

Expect anything from sea shanties to psychedelia, with a mix of original songs, traditional songs and covers of well known and less known songs.
Some performers will take requests on the night.

If you fancy a go at singing in public, then this is the place to start.

If you just want to sit back and listen, that’s also fine. In fact listening, and paying attention to the words and music, is what an evening of folk is all about.

We welcome anyone with a song or a tune to play. Or a poem or a story tell. Expect a warm welcome and a supportive ring of singers and audience.

Non-performers are welcome to come and there is no need to pre-book.

9 June: The Kimberleys

The Kimberleys are Isobel and Jim Kimberley. Yorkshire born Isobel, as a singer songwriter, met Essex boy Jim while seeking instrumentalists to collaborate on her original material. Isobel’s folk influences were gathered from an early age, initially in the folk clubs of Yorkshire, at university and subsequently during time living in the USA. Jim became a session drummer on moving to London and he numbered several folk musicians among his connections, one of which lead to him depping on drums with The Albion Band.

Whilst recording and touring Isobel’s original songs, the pair had always enjoyed making folk music just between themselves, and it seemed an obvious step to take folk music more seriously. At a friend’s birthday party they met, and sang with Cathy Lesurf (Fairport Convention, Fiddlers Dram). This fortuitous meeting led to the recording of an album (Turn The Glass) and the happy opportunity of working with Gordon Giltrap, Andy Cutting and even Dave Swarbrick. The album featured in the Daily Telegraph’s Top Folk Albums of 2015.

16 June: Steve Pledger

Steve Pledger has been described as “a master of his craft” by folking.com and his recordings as “object lessons in the art of contemporary songwriting” by fRoots Magazine. FATEA Magazine wrote that seeing him perform live is “a privilege to witness.”

Cast in the mold of the classic troubadour, there are inevitably shades of those who ultimately have defined the role, and yet his blend of blistering social commentary; stark honesty, and fearless tenderness have marked Steve out as someone unafraid to create his own place in the singer/songwriter landscape.

In November 2022, he released his 4th studio album, What Tomorrow Knows, following on from 14 Good Intentions (2012), Striking Matches in the Wind (2015), Somewhere Between (2016), and his live mini-album Alone in the Dark (2019). What Tomorrow Knows has been enthusiastically received by many and described as “a future classic” by Roots & Fusion.
