At its core, “Abigail” is simply a movie about a vampire ballerina. It’s not that deep, and it doesn’t need to be. It seems odd, then, that Abigail and Sammy (Kathryn Newton) are arguably the film’s most fun characters, but — despite their starring roles — they seem robbed of screen time. Sammy is the vehicle for some of the film’s most outrageous moments, and yet our attention is shifted right as things get interesting. 

Whereas the likes of Fiona Apple and Sinéad O'Connor can hold their own against traditionally celebrated musical poets such as Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan, Swift is in a position where she is unable to express herself without an extensive history of easter eggs and lore. She is the Marvel Studios of musicians.

In my journey as a young Black woman, I have always been interested in advocating for radical systemic change in the United States. I have always looked for an answer to why racism exists in every facet of society, and I have always wondered whether there is an end in sight.

Many UC Berkeley students seem to overlook these achievements of female ASUC candidates, opting to tunnel them into the “sorority girl stereotype” — airheaded women who couldn’t care less about academia, politics or public service — by bashing candidates for their personal lives or by making false, violating comments about their sexual histories. 

The ideas for my articles don’t come to me when I see a bowl of rice, a pair of feet or a toilet — my eyes aren’t able to see the magic that’s hidden in each of these ordinary items. Instead, I’m able to hear the magic in them through their names.

Think of trivial takes as training wheels before moving onto the opinions you really care about. How can you expect yourself to feel confident defending or even voicing the things that really matter to you if you’ve never owned your opinions on things such as whether or not flip-flops should be worn to class?

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, the Pacific Fishery Management Council recommended a full moratorium on salmon fisheries for the second straight year, citing “a multi-year drought, severe wildfires, and associated impacts to spawning and rearing habitat.” Including last year's closure, this is only the fourth time in state history that the fishery will be inactive.

Not to be a hater, but I thought for sure Paris would be overrated. Yet walking around the city, the Eiffel Tower hovering peripherally in the distance, I changed my mind.
