Came here for a Staff Team Builder and had a blast!
We learned choreography to Beyoncé's "End of Time." The choreography was very easy to follow. The instructor was also light hearted and made sure we enjoyed ourselves.
Dancing with a group was very fun and liberating. To top off our dance lesson, we had a quasi dance battle. It was so much fun!
Overall, I really enjoyed this experienced! Would love to come back!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jul 15, 2016
Tips:
- Go on the website and pick classes based on songs (I love the ease of the site and knowing exactly what song you'll be dancing to)
- Bring water
- When you get to class, check in with the person with "Broadway Bodies" shirt on
- You can put your bag down on the floor/corner
- Go on Giltcity right now, there's a discount for it!
What to expect:
- FUN, unpretentious, they're all about having fun! Nobody will judge you or mock you
- They will record you and post on social media the next day so that you can review what you've learned and actually practice it at home after! But don't worry, they'll turn the lights down low and people won't recognize you unless you point yourself out!
- Meet nice and fun people... or not
- Great energy, fun choreography, the steps are easy and broken down - you can always ask questions and they welcome them!
- This is NOT about learning the proper dance moves or being able to perform a perfect sequence -- it's about bringing out your inner sass and having fun along the way.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Melissa W.Ypsilanti, MI151328Jan 17, 2018
Yall, let me be real for a sec. I am not coordinated. I am fine motor skills girl. But things that require arms and legs and balance? Not so much.
Not sure why I decided I wanted to take a dance class, maybe just because I never had, but I obviously needed something beginner friendly, someplace that I wouldn't feel out of place for being a larger bodied woman, someplace where I could just have FUN. Enter Broadway Bodies, which is all of those things.
You pick your class largely based on the song you'd like to learn some dance to. I picked Thriller, because it seemed THE MOST fun option. No skill was required and there were people of all ages and sizes and proficiency levels at the class. I immediately felt at home.
The instructor was super nice and broke every section of the dance down into understandable pieces we could build on. She was also happy to repeat anything we didn't quite get. We did each section several times and the whole routine at the end a few times (one with a recording we were later e-mailed).
I'll be honest, I was pretty terrible. But I felt like I accomplished something, I made my body do a cool thing along with a bunch of other cool people, and I felt SO GOOD and had SO MUCH FUN doing it. Most importantly, the entire experience was completely judgement free so I could just let loose.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Carolyn B.New York, NY1942327Oct 25, 2019
Let me start by saying- I never review things. BUT the class I took with Megan Bowen (don't call me angel- heels class) was EVERYTHING & more. I absolutely despise working out; gyms scare me and nyc classes tend to be intimidating as hell, but when I say i walked out of there and wanted to text everyone in my contact list about it, and how much i loved it, I'm not kidding. This was the most positive and non judge mental class ever and it didn't even feel like exercise because it was THAT fun. (Don't get me wrong It was def a workout and I'm most certainly sore this am). I Can't wait to go back and cannot recommend this enough!!!!

Goddammit, after just one drop-in, Britney Spears dance class based on her never-released song, "Ooh Ooh Baby", I became hopelessly addicted to that song and now have it as a staple on my workout playlist. I can't remember the routine we did for the life of me, but those opening notes will always take me back to the way we swaggered and sweated it out like we were pop stars on one Wed evening.
These classes are a great concept, but they can be a bit hit or miss, depending on the type of music they choose and the instructor. Some songs are ones you can listen to for an hour (the length of one class), while others are so obnoxious, you wonder how you'll make it through the next 50 min. Some instructors are great at leading and choreographing and encouraging, while others move too fast and actually call out people's mistakes in front of everyone.
Roll the dice and see which way your class goes.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Elle N.New York, NY87614Feb 27, 2018
I must say these guys and girls are my fav people . Amazing dancers with great personalities . There is great variety of songs and sometimes is hard to pick , because I have life too , you know . I have to choose which one is better . And they make you so comfortable ( if you are shy , not me ) .
I have amazing experience every time . Love love love itHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nessa N.Manhattan, NY1322693Apr 17, 2017
This is one of the better dance cardio classes in NYC. I've taken quite a few others. I enjoy the fact that they teach you the choreography. I find it fun to properly learn things. If you just want a lot of cardio, this probably isn't the best class for you. Here's what I love:
- Choreography is broken down into two parts, which makes it easier to learn
- Nice, upbeat instructors
- Website has detailed information about classes
- Different theme classes with very popular music
- Pretty organized, they send you the class videos afterwards (many other places film the class but I have to track down videos myself).
What I think can improve is spending more time rehearsing the transition between the 2 parts.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Megan C.Littleton, CO23426545Jan 22, 2017
This place is the BEST. You know how people are always saying you have to find a good workout that doesn't feel like a workout? Something that's fun and keeps your body moving and then all of a sudden an hour has passed? THAT'S BROADWAY BODIES.
Plus, the hour will have passed while listening to Beyoncé or the Hamilton Soundtrack or Britney Spears or Justin Bieber or Rent.
Broadway Bodies is a shame-free environment. That means the focus is on you living your life, not on you perfecting the choreography. So don't be scared if you have a hard time picking up choreo, like me! There are ALL sorts of bodies and ALL sorts of abilities in the room. As one of their instructors told us before class once: "My body's going to do what my body does and your body's going to do whatever a QUEEN'S does."
You will leave sweaty and smiling and with probably at least four new facebook friends. This place is about COMMUNITY and it's a beautiful beautiful thing.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Eric P.Essex County, NJ39326631Nov 7, 2008First to Review
Sorry, my fellow yelpers, I couldn't find the "Gyms" category when I posted this :-(
This is a great alternative to yoga or pilates. It's Broadway dancing and choreography for people who aren't necessarily dancers but are interested in a fun way to work up a sweat. They just started up, and I managed to get into the first few test classes.
Definitely a blast!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jaime P.Brooklyn, NY0124Sep 5, 2019
