Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Our stay was magical! We loved our time at the Spa! We both had Maho give us fantastic massages! We love the Gold Floor! We celebrated our 47th wedding anniversary! We spent our honeymoon night at The Banff Springs as well. It was a great two nights!
This is our 6th time staying at the Banff Fairmont. Every stay has been wonderful and the staff is really friendly.
first of all, I want to thank and congratulate all the staff because absolutely any people of the staff (restaurants, reception desk, workers, maids etc) were extremely kind and helpful. Of course the place is wonderful, the room large and very comfortable. The only problem for me is the noise due to heating system (water in the manifold: noisy for me like whistle permanent): i mentioned it to reception, they proposed me to find another room and before workers came and did all their best to fix but they said it is inherent to the heating system itself. So my only point of progress is this: change/or find a way to reduce drastically the noise from your heating system. The rest is perfect.
Beautiful hotel and the service is great … it was a great overnight escape for my husband and I. I’m born and raised in Calgary and we stay in Banff often but this was our first overnight stay here at the Fairmont … Wherever we go I always book a suite for myself and another room steps away for my snoring husband to sleep in and I also don’t share bathrooms :) … be aware that both washrooms were so tiny that you can barely even sit on the toilet and you can not close the door … Booking two Gold rooms I expected a bathroom I could at least move around in :( … We ate at the 1888 restaurant in the hotel and then went for drinks down the corridor to the Rundle bar. We strolled through the shops and the grounds and it was magnificent.
Booked as a well-timed bonus points stay for a special night away from home. Lovely treat for a couple!
We stayed 5 nights for an industry conference. Our room was lovely and everyone on the staff we talked to was helpful and friendly.
