Having revived the farmland on their Tuscan estate, in the late 1920s Iris and Antonio Origo diverted a distant stream towards Val d’Orcia’s garden, turning it into an oasis. Inside their 15th-century house the author, biographer and heiress dotted her elegant suite of rooms with antiques from the Villa Medici, where she grew up, creating somewhere fit for a Renaissance ruler, albeit an enlightened one
