Be sure to check current weather and road conditions. In winter months, desert passes may be flooded, snowy roadways may be closed or require traction devices to travel north of Bishop. All motor vehicles, including AWD and 4WD must carry traction devices in winter. Tioga Pass (120 to Yosemite) is typically closed November – May.

Bishop Home To California’s 14ers
For those aspiring to conquer towering peaks like Mt Whitney, there’s no better starting point than White Mountain. Located approximately 50 miles from Bishop, it’s regarded as one of the “easiest” 14ers to hike in the lower 48. This makes it an ideal choice for first timers. Why? You can complete the hike in a single day without the need for overnight backpacking or camping. However, don’t be fooled— the trailhead starts at 12,000 feet and entails an elevation gain of over 2,500 feet! In other words, it’s a challenge worthy of anyone’s pride. It’s no wonder it’s considered one of the 8 best hikes near Bishop.

Depending on your budget, Mule Days offers up an assortment of options so everyone can enjoy them. The beating heart of the week-long event is the fairgrounds. While the shows in the main arena require a ticket, the fairgrounds themselves are free to enter. Even if you don’t go to a show, we highly recommend visiting them with your youngins.

Updated 5/23/2024 It continues to be spring time in the Eastern Sierra. On Monday it was sunny and warm in the morning in the Owens Valley. Monday afternoon on the upper Owens River saw a spring storm role in with rain. In between the spring wind and rain storms the weather has been great. The streams are warming up which has the insects getting active. The trout are responding to the increase in insect activity and are feeding on the nymphs, emerging insects and the adults. There is just something fun about seeing a trout ascend from the depths of the river to engulf an insect off the surface of the stream.
