Oracle Art

Body of Work:  The “Emergence” Collection -
An Oracle inspired journey

My current work was inspired by my Shamanic apprenticeship in 2015, where the teacher said, “All shaman are artists” and have an ability to read nature and pattern.
The same year I took part in an Art Therapy workshop that involved an exercise in a similar way to how I produced this work.
For each piece in this series the background was painted following the order of the rainbow or chakra colours. Then I threw paint covered cloths at or poured paint on the canvas. Always with a blank mind and without any expectations.
I then observed the canvas from different angles to see what I could see emerging and then highlighted what I saw.
I started the current series at the beginning of lockdown.  I see reflected in the works my personal journey through this period. Trying to understand what was really going on globally, my current life experience and the emergence of a new paradigm.
I felt inspired to photograph beautiful leaves and stick them onto the first image – to keep consistency I always added some multimedia aspect.
I have shared my interpretation of what I have painted and what I was experiencing at the time of painting, however I am interested in the themes that other people see or intuit, and I would be interested in that feedback.
Ultimately the aim is to use the paintings to make a set of Oracle Cards.
I can also make Oracle Art paintings to order for individuals. Please contact me if you are interested and I will see what emerges.

About Me

Julia Alabaster

Julia went to school in the UK where she was good at both Art and Science but was persuaded to follow the science route, which was assumed to offer better career opportunities.
So, Julia did a degree in Physiology followed by a diploma from the Institute of Optimum Nutrition.  After managing a large Natural Health Centre in London, Julia moved to New Zealand in 1990. Living in Whangarei, Julia set up her own health food cafe.  She later studied Homeopathy for 6 years, which she practiced and later taught at the Bay of Plenty College of Homeopathy.   Julia has worked in the health field in various ways throughout her life and continued her studies with a Masters in Molecular Medicine in Auckland in 2006, specialising in the Immune response to acute disease.
Julia has always had a strong connection with nature and has helped to run and is a director with her husband Chris of the charitable organisation, OceansWatch.
She has a passion for dancing and has a strong connection to Spirit.
Julia has always expressed herself creatively in one medium or another but didn't receive creative guidance until she did the “Learning Connexxion” Art and Creativity Foundation Course in 2010.
She has produced a lot of ceramic and sculptural work in addition to painting and has studied under many tutors at the Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei.  Julia has also produced larger works in ferrocement and has an interest in beautiful natural buildings. Julia’s work has sold at the Kaipara Sculpture Exhibition, Quarry Arts Gallery and Helena Bay Art gallery.

Julia currently lives in an eco-village in Matapouri with her husband Chris. She paints, grows vegetables, plays with her horses and runs holiday accommodation.
