Area school districts share $5.4 million for safety, mental health support

Washington, Greene and Fayette County school districts will receive more than $5.4 million in state grants to support safety measures and mental health services for students and staff, according to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Deliquency’s School Safety and Security Commission. The grants are part of $47 million approved by the committee “to improve safety, security, and mental health supports for students and staff at schools across the Commonwealth.” The awards include nearly $509,700 for Carmichaels Area School District in Greene County, and more than $486,000 for Ringgold Area School District and nearly $359,000 in Charleroi School District Washington County. Wash High students win medals at ACT-So competition

Three Washington High School students won awards at the third annual NAACP ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) held at Robert Morris University on April 6. Carter Spruill, president of the Coraopolis NAACP Chapter, presented award certificates to Alyvia Price for poetry, Car’Liyah Walden for a short story, and junior Tiana Ellis for a sculpture during a presentation at Wash High last week. Ellis won a gold medal in the sculpture category and will compete in the national competition in Las Vegas in July, in conjunction with the NAACP National Convention. Walden earned a bronze medal. CARROLL Rape allegations: Harrison Carr, 57, formerly of Carroll Township, is charged by Carroll Township police with rape of a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, sexual assault and indecent exposure. According to the criminal complaint, the youth, now 14, reported multiple assaults to police in October 2023. Carr is accused of sexually assaulting the victim more than 50 times between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. In 2021 Carr pleaded guilty to similar charges against three different victims and is currently incarcerated in SCI Greene in Franklin Township, according to online court records. Bass Pro Shops coming to South Fayette

SOUTH FAYETTE – Bass Pro Shops has announced plans to build a new store in the Pittsburgh region. It is set to be located in South Fayette Township’s Newbury Market, according to a news release from the retailer. Located just off Interstate 79 near Bridgeville, it would be the third Bass Pro Shops store in Pennsylvania and the first in the Pittsburgh region.
